I have the Honda same as yours and I like how good it's been working throughout last year and just started up again.. I used it on new accounts and only for them.. for everyone else I use my Honda 2163pda self propelled and a Husqvarna with Honda engine. Great review 👍

Toro is the best overall I used to own Honda but like you said they’re slow and bogs down a lot where the toro hasn’t let me down at all thicker deck and better fine cut.

All you have to do is raise the factory RPM, they set it low for less sound. And you can also increase the speed by adjusting the throttle cable.

And the old John Deere 14SB, 14SC, JX75, and JX85 still run circles around both the Toro and Honda! My oldest one is almost 30 years old and still gets the job done. Maintainence is key!

The 14sb Kawasaki engine, full pressure lubrication means you can mow a ditch with no worries about oil starvation. Splash lubrication on cheaper machines will never be as good.

I am a home owner and cut my lawn 2 times each week. I had a Honda HRM215 for 18 years. I replaced the rear wheels 4-5 times, and transmission and a coil. It was always reliable. I picked up a Honda commercial in 2019 when my HRM blew a seal. Honda announced this last fall they don't make or sell mowers after the 2023 season. I can see parts getting hard to come by in years to come. Sad day for sure.

I have 80 gardens to cut weekly... 4 honda HRH mowers almost 10 years old... I've modified throttle so it revs higher so it puts out the same as an FJ180 might be a little more powerful as it seems to bog down a little less than my Toro 21 commercial with the Kawasaki... I haven't had an issue yet, It's always just the dam wheels that go once a year

Love my Toro commercial mowers but what a price difference between them and the Honda HRC216 where I am in Canada. $1729 for the Honda HRC216 vs $2500-$2700 for the Toro Commercial units depending on the model. Is the Toro worth that price premium for a 21" mower?

IMO it’s not worth it at all I keep sharp blades on my Honda hrc216 pro’s and all three of them out performed my toro 21”and 30” mowers by a long shot the only time my Hondas have clogged is when using the side discharge chute in wet grass that was well over a foot long but three passes and it looked great not a piece uncut

Hi, I was wondering after watching your video. How do you feel about the toros with the honda engines? Looking to get one with a honda due to the pull rope and throttle cable is also handle bar mounted as compared the kawi. I cant find any videos on you tube of anyone who has the toro with the honda engine. Is it just as good as the Kawasaki and would last as long? using it for residential but want a really nice mower that will last me. Would really like to know. also when you have the mower in gear is it easy to pull backwards when you let go of the drive bail bar and just have the mower one running on the top?I cant seem to find any dealers around me who have any thus is why im asking.

The honda speed can be adjusted m cables stretch and need adjustment once in awhile , also check your engine speed on Honda . Mine cuts great but then i have not compared to a Toro Commercial. My 2 cents !!

I have the toro with the same engine just a 2013 and it’s great however unlike your tiktok mine doesn’t cut troughs a lot of grass like that, the engine slows down and will die. Any reason why?

On your Toro 22298 mower, can you pull the mower back without the wheels locking up? I was looking at a used one and the mower wouldn't pull back unless you put the transmission in neutral. That would be a huge drawback as I'm always pulling my Toro 22297 mower back.

My gxv 160 lasted 3 yr on the toro commercial. Clean carb check fly wheel key chang coil ,sparkplug , and gas . Runs but no power might be governor or rings also did compression test and leak down test.Home use only. I am so dispointed in the mower.Use to mow with a lawn boy with a tecumseh moter lasted over 20 years and still running deck shot only change oil and sharpen blade.Paid 150 on sale versus toro 1500

Which has the best rear wheel drive assembly? I have a Honda HRX217 and I'm sick of these cheap rear wheels that don't hold up. The cheap plastic wheel hub wallows out where it holds the bearing, causing the rear wheels to wobble as I'm mowing. My yard is over 1/2 acre and bumpy. I don't mind spending $$ for a mower build well that will hold up.

The start/stop function on the toro is actually superior because there is no more control cable replacement or adjusting. You're gonna bend over to adjust the height every yard anyway.

I'll buy Honda engines all day long if they are good and cheap (except for the Chinese Hondas which are junk recycled metal). The Toro has a better deck and bagging system but they never adopted a comfortable handle bar for their Proline mowers and that's why they kinda suck. I personally like having a single blade which is another reason I don't like the Honda mowers. It's too close to call but if I have a choice I'd still pick the Toro for the cut quality.

Thank you for the excellent review. I've been in the lawn care business for 25 years and Toro is the only one I've used. The current Toro model is definitely the best I've ever used. I've never had the chance to use the Honda commercial version mostly because they were more expensive than the Toro versions where I live up here in Canada. In the past few years, this has changed. Toro pricing in Canada this year is : $ 1379 for model 22290, $1429 for model 22287 (Kohler edition), $1 629 for model 22297 (Kawasaki Kai non BBC). The BBC and Honda equipped models get even more pricier. In contrast, the Honda HRC216 is $1449. All these prices are in Canadian dollars. This year, Toro has introduced model 22287 with the Kohler CV173 cc engine on it. The throttle control on this unit are on the handle and not the motor. Seems like from your experiences, the Toro is the better unit.

I've had Toro mowers, they have a tendency to scalp more than the Hondas. The Hondas are also built like tanks, where as the toros there's a belt or two in there somewhere. the HRC units have no belts, smooth variation in the transmission and an excellent quality Honda engine on them. Overall, the Honda's a better built machine.

@@WJCTechyman Thanks for the feedback. Hondas do seem better built but they don't seem to be as productive as the Toro units. JVJ's experience is similar to a few other people I've spoke to who have used both. However, the toros have become quite expensive where I am.

@@joeraptor1 It meets or exceeds the Toro mowers that I have come across. Stay away from a TimeMaster, apparently it takes over an hour to replace the engine to deck belt on those machines as well as having tendencies of clogging. If you want a bigger machine, I would just go for a decently built rider. The bagging ability is very impressive with this machine. If you empty it where it is totally filled, it packs it like a hay baler. The variable transmission on it is nice when tackling tall grass (I had it mow foot tall grass just this week and it was able to pack the bag, and cut quite nicely all at the same time in one pass). I haven't used it much for mulching as I had to keep up with the fast growing grass so I was discharging it with the optional elbow. The mulching ability of this machine is probably fine, but I have a NeXite (polymer) deck machine (older HRM215) with the twin blades and the pieces are about 1/4-1/8 inch in size. That's the current HRX machine line as they have potentially better mulching than the Commercial lines.

Have you had the Honda's RPM checked/adjusted to 3200 or maybe even 3400? I have a 2001 Commercial Honda and bought a brand-new 2020 Commercial Honda. The 2001 has a 2-speed transmission that literally pulls you around a yard and almost makes you run; plus the engine is very obviously running at higher RPMs. The 2020 needed adjusting. I could tell you are a Toro fanboy from the get go. I own that same Honda mower and it is way faster than what you showed. On full speed I need to speed walk to keep up with it. Second I have never had it bog down on tall or even wet grass unless I had the mulch kit on it. Anyway never have had a Toro but I'm sure it is great as well.

I've never really seen an issue with fuel in the stock Honda gas tank. Usually I can get through a residential lawn without having to fill the machine. Besides, the fuel tank is a reminder to do a quick inspection of the machine anyway.

Dude the huge tank is badass. About 3 times bigger. Yes it's Damn good to inspect the machine but honestly the big tank alleviates the stress of a refill 3× more. It's worth it. If it had Hondas self propelled it'd be perfect. A side discharge option would be stupid convenient for tall grass

unfortunately youre comparing a commercial mower to a residential honda, I've owned both. On paper the honda seems a lot better but honestly its no better. Some things are better on the honda but the toro just feels so SOLID. Im currently shopping for a new one of these and im debating on what to do.

Easy 2 minutes to change the bar blade ; able to quickly change the blade for the best blade for the application at hand ..Recycler blade is great for mulching and Bagging dry grass. . Toro cuts and mulches well. Commercial Mowing you want speed :Toro .

Thx man. Was gonna set my money aside for a honda. Then was looking for cheaper options such as just a new motor to slap on my brute mower with a 675 series briggs. Honda cuts wet grass toro to many issues and only good for dry grass the Honda is why more vs then the toro everyone knows that if toro was so superior then you shouldn’t even have a Honda I use my toro on nice good dry days when I got one off my best looking lawns to cut on the block I’ll tend to pull the toro out because they like there grass cut tall! Toro's are not less money. They cost more than the Honda's. A comparable toro with the BBC to match the Honda BBC retails for 1799. The Honda is 1469. I have had both, and the Honda leaves a better mulched cut than the Toro.

@@JVJLawnCare Yes and no. I have personal experience with both brands as well: using them as well as fixing them. The Hondas have fewer failure points than the Toros (heavy duty BB clutch and direct drive shafts from the engine to transmission and from trans to wheels on Commercial Hondas vs. belts, cheap transmissions and cogged wheel drives on Toros) and I have found Toros scalp lawns worse than Hondas. Again, my opinion in how the machines are engineered.

Running a 22-year-old Toro Proline 2 cycle Suzuki. I’ve never had to repair anything. Filters and a new spark plug each year. We have the Hondas at work and they have small issues a lot. Engine is great but not a great mower. I don’t get the hype with Honda fan boys. I plan to buy a new Toro soon.

Well worth the money, the Toro uses belts and the Honda is heavier built. The hydrostatic transmission actually feels nicer than a three speed transmission(if you look on the handle, there is an orange lever. That, my friend, IS your cruise control). I would expect the machine to cost less than the Toro over the lifetime as Toro transmissions can be unreliable. Also, most of that stuff you wouldn't even find in a $20,000 car, or tractor let alone a $1800 mower. Please note that the HR214SX, the ancestor of this lawn mower, would be close to $3000 in today's money after inflation as it was $1000 back in the mid-1980s.

Umm, if you are smart, you shouldn't be using a lawn mower in wet grass anyway. If not addressed, it rots the deck and severely reduces the efficiency of any mower. My Honda machines, both brand new and 30+ years old bag wet grass just fine. Toro's efficiency will drop more quickly due to the deck design using those weird wedges to "kick" the grass back down during mulching. The machines have an odd bag design, not quite as simple or versatile as Honda's and looking at some commercial Toros, they are quite tall, especially with the unnecessarily large fuel tank and the weird engine guards. You can't get under a standard wooden picnic table with those and you are more likely to snag the machine on bushes with all of that stuff. The Honda's more streamlined and has a superior mulching system and the front bumper is where it should be, close to the ground to protect the nose of the machine.

@@JVJLawnCare I apologise for the long comment. My advice, don't take on more than you can chew. Rain comes and you plan around it. If you work 40 h/wk, schedule only 20-30 to mowing as two to three days it's raining. Keep the maintenance up on your machines, have redundancies (backup mowers and other equipment) in place and schedule with flexibility. Don't hard schedule and maybe leave it up to your customers to call you when they think it needs it. Suggest to customers to keep their lawns a little longer, roughly 3" during the Summer months of June, July and August and refrain from watering. Now, customers may take the suggestion or tell you how to do it. The other times should be filled cleaning and maintaining your equipment, business paper work and other chores or jobs if need be. If you have other services like maintaining gardens or hard scaping, do that. I would also suggest diversifying a bit more from landscaping like carpet cleaning or car detailing. Mine is computer troubleshooting. I also have the abilities to do detailing as I have a portable central vac and commercial heads as well as other equipment to support that. I'm my only employee and I have found it hard to keep up especially since I don't currently have a mower deck for my garden tractor. Last Friday I had to mow eight lawns because it rained for two days. To keep your mowing relatively easy, don't mulch in wet conditions, bag it. This is where the Honda shines, is bagging. Again, I apologise for the long comment, but just some suggestions.

Honda mowers are junk. Engines are the weakest of all made. I agree with what you said. No sell Honda.

Just this week, (June 2, 2021) I went through foot tall grass and the HRC216k3HXC cut all of it. Granted I was walking on the slowest speed, but it did quite well. Have you ever used a Honda mower? Have you used one for over 25 years? Get back to me when you do. Honda engines are some of the best if not the best engineered small, medium and auto engines out there. The single cylinder and twin engines are the first choice for commercial equipment with more abuse that isn't big turf. Honda is the largest engine manufacturer by quantity on the planet and rightly so. Vanguard and Kawasaki can't hold a candle to them in not only general purpose but in automotive, marine and power sports. Honda engines run 40+ years with few issues and still run like new.
