I liked the review and loved the paintings. I recently painted a pastel for my grandchildren. They got 2 male mice from the pet store and oneof them had babies!😅 I painted a mouse on a mushroom and two babies at the base of a tree. Their tails formed a heart. The kids loved it and I hope it brings fond memories in the years to come.

Hi Ann; Greetings from Toronto, Ontario 🇨🇦 As I own every version of Derwent pocket pan sets I guess I'll have to go across the street to my nearest art supplies store, Midoco, and get this one also. I simply cannot seem to resist purchasing little boxes of paint. As to palette staining, I removed the stains from my plastic and metal palettes by rubbing "Comet with bleach" cleaning powder on them with my finger. I did this gently and carefully so as not to contaminate the paints with the powder. I did this at the sink with gently running water to ensure complete removal of residual Comet residue. Worked perfectly and all my palettes are now stain free and white the way I prefer them. I keep them that way by cleaning them after using them just like I clean my brushes after using them. Yes, yes, I know that there are painters galore who love and advocate for dirty palettes, I'm just not one of them. When I sit down to paint, I want to see a clean white palette, clean white paper and clean water in a white-ceramic, 3-section wash bowl. This is a zen moment for me: I breathe, I relax, I paint. All is well with the world; it is unfolding as it should. Cheers 🤗

I think Shepherd was Milne’s illustrator? Also my pad of bookmarks is just like yours and on the little label on the back, it says “15 sheets”. Thank you for this review, I’m a member, and totally get your comments and concerns. Love Derwent too. On the eyes, my macular degeneration is really bad. I get shots in my eyes every 10 weeks that have halted the impairment, but please, please be careful of your eyes! ❤

Thank you, Linda! Yes our sight is a treasured gift! Sorry to hear of your MD. My grandmother had that - I wish you prolonged good vision! Bookmarks-yes, 15 sheets and I want to say the round sheet tin contains 30. I love these papers and so convenient to have these sizes! Glad you enjoyed this-thanks for the info on Milne’s illustrator, too. 💖

Good, attractive product designs, IMO. Derwents compact paint palettes are really handy, and those Hahnemuhle papers are in fun shapes that generate a lot of 'I-want-itis'. I was late to appreciate Beatrix Potter (beautiful ilustrated book, by the way), since those stories weren't on my radar as a child. Maurice Sendak left an early impression with some of his children's book, but my favorite work of his is the illustrated 'Nutcracker'. In previous decades, I was into Mary Engelbreit and Edward Gorey. Also Donald Hendricks, for his series of paper dolls based on historical figures and literary characters.

Thank you, Irene! I agree-Drwent has a way of drawing me in (no pun intended!😅) Wow-very deep memory unlocked with Sendak’s Nutcracker! Do you remember Jan Brett? She is a Colorado artist whose children’s books really evoke wonder…much like Sendak’s Nutcracker. I was a HUGE Engelbreit devotée for all of the 1990s, and I had one of TS Eliot’s books illustrated by Gorey, Old Possums Book of Practical Cats (the roots of the musical, Cats) I will have to look for Hendricks-I may know the illustrations by sight but not by name💖

@INCWorks 2 ай бұрын
@@artonthecreek I didnt have a copy of Old Possum's Book of Practical Cat's, but I borrowed that illustrated edition several times from the public library.😸'Macavity the Mystery Cat' was my favorite. Hendricks is a bit obscure - he worked in the the field of fashion illustration. His paper doll sets were sold independently through his website, but have been out of production for about fifteen years.

@INCWorks I looked up both for more info…Gorey did the fabulous alphabet book! I never put that together but it made my day knowing T S Eliot’s cats and the unfortunate children were conceived by the same magical brain! Hendricks’ style was very popular in the 1960s & early 70s. I remember many illustrations that felt like his paper dolls. I wish they were still in print!

Hi Ann, Love your Peter Rabbit! I wanted to ask a question about the circular paper. I noticed that you did not do anything to tape it down and it looks like you did not encounter any buckling of the paper when you added the watercolor. Am I correct? I wonder if the circular shape could have played a role in that? Or do you think it has more to do with the fact that the Hannemule paper is 100% cotton? I painted a get well card on a watercolor greeting card blank made by Strathmore today and the curling was so instantaneous that I had to throw my first attempt away because I had failed to tape it down. The package on the Strathmore card blanks says it is 140 lb cold press watercolor paper and is resists buckling. That was not my experience at all! But it sure looked like you did not have it happen with your round Hannemule paper! Not buckling is a huge bonus in my book!
@artonthecreek
@artonthecreek 2 ай бұрын
Hi Leslie! Thank you💖 It’s been my experience that buckling is largely dependent upon how much water is applied during the painting process. On this small paper, there just wasn’t a need for heavy washes. I‘ve used the Strathmore greeting cards and really like them, but I’ve always taped them down and ironed them afterward. If you do want to try a 100% cotton greeting card, I know Arteza makes them. Here’s an affiliate link, although I’ve never tried them I’ve heard great things about them from other artists: amzn.to/4fUDUKo The price on 2 sets of 25 is really good right now! I put some in my own cart lol 🛍️ In my personal opinion, “resists buckling” is a marketing term. Unless I’m working with 300 gsm 640 lb paper, it will buckle on me using more water in my washes. I didn’t really try a lot of wet-on-wet with this Peter Rabbit painting- maybe that test is in order…?

@@artonthecreek You have me thinking now. My first inclination is to think that I was not using much water but that is probably incorrect. I started wet on dry and was painting a light sky. Which means I was using a dilute concentration of pigment... and lots of water. I would not have put that together alone, so thank you! I only have one card left so an order of something that I can put through the mail is in order. I was kind of bummed to learn that the post office will not accept letters with rounded corners.... those round pages would make really fun postcards!

@leslievinson3574 they’d have to go in an envelope, I guess. I’ve sent postcards with rounded corners in the mail very recently-I haven’t heard that rule! Guess I’d better check on that….🤔

Hi Ann! My usual, “better late, than never” I’m afraid. Having said that, this video was/is well worth waiting for. I love the interesting shapes of these 100% cotton Hahnemuehle papers. I already bought some of the round - sorry Ann, but your Amazon links still do not allow me, here in the UK, to purchase it and benefit you. That being the case, I found an art store on eBay that sold it for £14/$18.26 and free postage. I do wish you could benefit from the ridiculous amount of things I purchase from Amazon, due to not always getting out. Anyway, enough gripes and back to the video 😊 I absolutely adored your Peter Rabbit illustration, you painted it perfectly, and doing so on the round paper really made it sing! What truly gave me a 💡 moment though, was your cutting out those viewfinders to match the paper shap. Now why had that never occurred to me, as finding a good composition it just one of my oh so many problems. I intend to do the same, thank you. The other issue I face is my struggles with sketching out my composition, so I intend to fully embrace my talent for tracing. If it was good enough for many of the old Masters, then I intend to feel more comfortable with it. Perhaps in time my ability to sketch will improve, whilst in the meantime, I can enjoy the joy of placing colour on paper. I’m currently working my way through a Lindsay Weirich course on improving my watercolour skills. Decision finally made, and conscience finally clear on the whole to trace, or not to trace thing, I hope to be the one to send out Happy Mail in the form of small paintings 🤞🏻 Your parcels are still here, but I will explain elsewhere. I ought to mention the Derwent watercolours. I was disappointed in their appearance and staining quirks. Viviva is purely ink based, and yet I feel that even they life better than these. Also, I love my Inktense pans and have experienced no palette staining, and it would appear this palette is constructed of the same material? I too love Derwent products and do enjoy being able to buy British where possible, especially as they remain manufactured here, unlike W&N who use French and Chinese manufacturers - very sad, and considering their price even here in the UK, really very naughty of them. I believe King Charles May remove the Royal Warrant held since the mid 19th century. I have wandered off topic. I feel a nap, with the cat coming on. Sorry for ramble. I blame your soothing voice 🤷‍♀️🥰👩🏻‍🎨🎨🖌️🥰

Rambles always appreciated! Re: Amazon-I for some reason do not have access to UK. I believe I do have access to Canada, France and Italy….so go figure. I have worked and worked with them all to no avail. I am perfectly content that my viewers shop wherever it pleases them; my affiliate links are only provided as a convenience. I thank you for continuing to try, however, I don’t see any resolution coming soon so please shoot wherever you find the best price & selection🩷 I will continue to use these watercolors because I do want to to know more about their look when they dry. Inktense always look a little flat to me when dry, which makes sense because they are ink, and these had the odd bleeding of the fountain pen ink when applied on top - so mysteries remain to be solved! It will be a mystery worth solving! Re: Peter Rabbit…I think I will paint all the main characters and have them framed together with circles cut out of the mat. I’ve completed Benjamin Bunny as well and once they are done I will probably post a short on that-I’m really enjoying these uniquely shaped papers. Glad you got some to try!!! Re: tracing- 100% YES. Do that, use a grid method, whatever it takes! Don’t let sketching stop you from painting! I’m also happy you’re taking Lindsay’s course-you will love it🩷

@@artonthecreek Mysteries surrounding these watercolours, and (I have always wanted to say this), the game’s afoot! 😁 I look forward to hearing about any and all mystery solutions. Making a painting of all the characters is a fabulous idea. They will surely look amazing when grouped together in this way. I so enjoy watching you get to do the paintings that give you nothing but pleasure. Will you stick to the Derwent watercolours, or simply choose which ever palette captures your attention?

I love the art of Beatrix Potter, have you seen the movie about her early life ‘Miss Potter’ with Renee Zellweger? I watched your video with CC on as I’m sitting in my son’s hospital room right now and he’s sleeping. He was severely dehydrated so they are keeping him on IV’s and broad spectrum antibiotics. His blood cultures should be back tomorrow. ~ Kathy B.

Hello! Do you mean Inktense? I know I mentioned Derwent Inktense in this video. If that’s what you’re referring to, Inktense is an ink-based product by Derwent that comes in paint pans, blocks & pencils. It is advertised as permanent when dry, so it has extended applications such as painting on treated fabric. It’s pretty fun stuff! Let me know if you meant something else❤️
