Review: Dragon Tooth by Songbird Ocarina

Over ten years later and I just bought one as my first ocarina. There's no serial number and no longer a wire loop or chain, though it does come with a really nice roll pouch to store it in. I have large hands and the hole spacing is comfortable for me with no issues holding onto it on the higher notes. Definitely a recommend for those with big sausage fingers like me. I'm having a lot of fun learning. I don't always hit the right notes, but the notes still sound good at least.

That ocarina looks SICK!! I like the angle of the mouthpiece, it looks really comfortable to play. If they can make this ocarina with a sort of sunburst fade or maybe a sort of creamy color, that would look very nice. I like the reverb sound. It gives the ocarina a little more character and fullness.

I just got this ocarina yesterday. I just started playing it. It sounds beautiful. I spent a little more for the straw fire. I am kinda sad i didn't get a really neat mottled pattern on it but it is still a beautiful shape and color. the dragon scale wrap bag is a cool extra as well as the song book. I have trouble lifting my left ring finger for some of the notes but I guess I just need to work into the fingering. Nice review by the way. You showcase the ocarina well. This is one of the videos I watched that convinced me to buy it. Just took a while to afford.

I totaly love this ocarina. It's the first one I ever got and it was live 100 bucks... But it's worth it. Sad to admit that I've dropped my ocarina many times and broken it... fixed it and it still sounds great!

This ocarina is sooooooo nice! I ordered one and songbird was able to get it to me in 2 days! I was sooo surprised with the shipping time. But for the ocarina itself, its unique and beautiful. I have the zelda sweet tater. Its totally legit. Sounds good, easy to get started with. Also comes with a pretty diverse little song book and scale chart. Never used the baby dragon tooth, probably cool too, but im sort of biased towards the zelda one.

@lindsaymagg Reverb is short for reverberation which is like an echo effect, similar to playing in a big concert hall. The ocarina was made to play in wide open places where it can echo, so it just sounds much better with reverb.

@Kotasavu Vibrato is done by moving your diaphragm in a sort of "jumpy" kind of way. Think of it like laughing, but on a smaller scale. You're just blowing into the ocarina and then alternating between more and less pressure.

Wow, I actually just got my dragontooth in the mail today! I have been playing it all day! Mine is #744! I love the design and feel of it! The left thumb hole was a bit of a pain to get used to, but I kinda enjoy it a bit, although its difficult to open and close quickly. Also, I love be thou my vision! Its definitely one of my favorite hymns, maybe even one of my favorite songs!

@Kotasavu When you do vibrato, you don't do it with your ocarina, you do it with your body. (stomach) It's hard at first, and takes a lot of practice. I still can't do it, but i'll try to learn it.

I have been playing the dragon tooth. Here are some observations. Tone: very nice. Very clean. Appearance: beautiful piece. I get slot of people asking "where can I get one. Playing: uncomfortable to told hold for extended periods. My left hand cramps up. The left hand pinky hole is larger than the right. I have to jam my pinky in the hole or else get leaks. Playing the A, B and C notes are difficult (higher register notes). You have to be creative holding the tooth. Overall I give it

I wish I had an ocarina after seeing your videos! I'm from india and I can't find it here. I couldn't afford one from shipping, so what I did was I tried making one from pvc pipe. It could produce only two notes and the only thing I could play was ambulance siren sound!! In the end I just downloaded a 4 hole ocarina app and I learned to play 'ocarina of time' and 'lion sleeps tonight'. Thanks for introducing me to this unique instrument!!

I'm not familiar with them, but I think it's the regular ceramic. Straw fire is when the ocarina is fired a second time to give it a wood smell and appearance; this one doesn't look like wood to me.

the second song was Be Thou My Vision, by David Gillingham. But it is a Hymn, so you might of heard it at a Church Choir or something like that. I also played this in my band, and I loved this song.

@Flonas97 I am covering them completely. Besides, if I weren't, the notes would be higher, not lower, wouldn't they? It just seems like the lower few notes are tuned half a note too low. While I don't notice it when playing solo, it becomes obvious if I play with playback or with someone else.

I just received my own Dragon Tooth Ocarina, and I must say, it's a fantastic instrument, although it's taken some getting used to, compared to pendant or sweet potato ocarinas I'm more familiar with. What would you say would be the best method of holding and fingering, I"m something at a loss. Since you've got a hole for every finger and thumb, playing higher notes seems to be rather difficult while balancing it in your hands. A tutorial on fingering and proper positioning would be great!

I bought the dragon tooth last year for my birthday and i absolutely love it! I practice with it all of the time. I think the really small holes are a little too close i think. I'm afraid my fingers are gonna cover them in the middle of playing something and make it sound weird.

i would go with a focalink 12 hole if i were you. you have a few clay ocarinas, but you need a plastic one so you can take it everywhere without having to worry about your muse breaking. In my opinion, i would get the dragon tooth later.

I love my Dragontooth, especially because they gave me a free raku firing so they could send it to me on time. The only thing that bothers me is that the rising airflow you mentioned isn't working. In fact, I have to blow stronger at the lower notes, so that I'm close to the point where the sound breaks into a ear-hurting whine. Otherwise, the notes will be half a note too low. I was actually quite surprised when I tried to play a song by ear and thought "wtf is this song only half notes?"

So I Bought one for Christmas, and mine sounds like it gets wispy going into the high notes, so I looked and there are two cracks on the inside and I think that’s why it sounds that way, so I filled the cracks with a little bit of glue and I hope it helps.

@docjazz4 Hi David I wouldn't suggest using the the chain I broke my dragon tooth last year because the chain broke and fell on the concrete. Luckily Songbird was nice enough to send a replacement.

No, it's an Alto, so it won't be anywhere near as shrill as a Soprano. Obviously, as with most Ocarinas aside from Bass ocs, it can get a little shrill at the highest notes, but it's nothing to worry about. As for a case, i'm sure Songbird carries cases large enough to fit it. You can call Songbird at 1-866-OCARINA to ask them personally. Or, alternately, you can Google Plano Pistol Case (Large). You can usually find them for under $10. I've heard many fellow Ocarinists recommend this one.
