REVIEW: Field Testing the 36” Fiskars 8lb IsoCore Splitting Maul

Picked up this 36" 8lb Fiskars Splitting Maul to replace my cheaper maul that wore out and broke. This is an 8lb head. Price varies but around $55-70. All in all, during the initial field testing, I am concluding thus far the splitting maul is doing what it says it will - splitting big pieces of wood (and for hammer uses of the maul) as well as seems to reduce overall shock compared to older mauls that I have used.

It taken some friendly ribbing from my buddies because I’ve switched to Fiskar for a lot of my chopping, trimming and splitting duties. Mainly because of the shock absorbing the tool takes instead of your arms and shoulder

@@jebert34 for sure, I got all my splitting done for the year but I’ll be resplitting some pieces to get the feel of the maul, then head out to the bush and do some more cutting and blocking to do some fresh splits.

So far it’s been great, just the weight of the maul is enough to split the wood without putting any force on it, it’s going to be a great alternative to splitting wood 🪵 rather than using the hydraulic splitter all the time.👍🏻😎

Temperature has alot to do with if wood will split....frozen rounds want to split because the grain is expanded

The best place to hit the round is on or in line with a natural crack!

I split poplar so you could pretty much split it with a felling axe and I find Mail’s work better becuase I can pick them up and just drop them and usually it will crack them loose and I can do that for hours without getting tires

I’ve split a ton of wood with this thing. It’s developed a few cracks now on the upper black neck but I’m impressed it is still holding up strong for what I’ve put it through for hard splitting tasks.

my maul came with a 38 inch handle . they dont make a replacment that length but they do make a 36 inch one . i have a ludell from the 18-1900s. i wonder the about the fiskars i have the x25 splitting axe it is nice but the steel is low quality

I separated the head and handle the third swing after I purchased. Returned it and the gave me the old one along with free replacement. Put rope and poxy around head base and then crossovered the top 6 times. Been splitting EVERYTHING since. If you split wood daily you will get use to the weight in 2 weeks. First week is hell on the arms tho

Thanks for the comment. Fiskars makes a lot of different products so they may make smaller hatchets and axes but I’m unfamiliar with those. This maul works well though. Still use it almost every week for something. Have a good weekend.

I've always wanted to cut logs, so I bought this one, I have no experience at all, so I have a question, do I need to sharpen it? Or there's no need to sharpen this splitting maul?

Thanks for the comment. To sharpen a maul or not seems to be one of preference. I have not yet had to sharpen mine as the end has a a slightly “sharp” end yet but this maul is made for splitting and not so much cutting like an axe. The maul end doesn’t need to be as sharp as axe, but the maul end probably shouldn’t be blunt either or it can bounce back upon strike. I’m not sure of the golden rule but some people use a mill hand bastard file and sharpen gentle at about 45 degrees if edge becomes blunt. But again, everyone has their own preference here. If you are splitting on occasion I suspect it would be a while before you would need to add a small edge to it.

Usually mauls come pretty sharp, and they have so much weight that the shock and the penetration and wedge should split it without having to be sharpened

i would keep the edge profile the same as it came. i think a duller edge would tend to bouce off / be less effectiove and not deliver the force into the wood but a razor sharp edge would just dull super quick and you wouldnt get much return for constant sharpening.

I don’t like fiskars on bit and I don’t like using mauls either I prefer a 5 pound splitting axe. Either way I came here because I do like to have a maul to get big rounds in half before I go with my axe often time the maul and a sledgehammer I thought maybe this maul would suit that pretty well given I’m so tough on them think I’m going to pick one up. I still don’t like fiskars though lol

They have 3 types. 3.7kg. 3.9kg.and 4.6kg. Test before.
