Great review. Film sim dial was on the X-S20 first, just didn't have the icons on it :) I have an X-S20 and will replace my old X-M1 with the X-M5 now I've sold my X-E4. Should be easier to 'menu fumble' between the cameras now.

You’re absolutely right - what I should have clarified in the video is that the X-T50 was actually the first Fujifilm camera to feature a dedicated film simulation dial, which has now made its way to the X-M5. The X-S20, on the other hand, has a customisable function dial that defaults to film simulations in most modes (except Manual, where it switches to exposure compensation). That flexibility explains why it doesn't have the icons on the dial - it’s designed to handle a variety of functions. And your setup sounds like a great move! Having similar controls between the X-S20 and X-M5 should definitely make switching between them a lot more intuitive. Less time adjusting to different menus means more time doing what you love!

The af is not glued on your hair... and you re testing at f8 on a wide angle and it still hunted. It is pretty bad and i dont know why you dont mention it

Because she represents a store. There's only as much critique you can expect from a channel directly affiliated to a party that needs to sell the product directly. On top of that, I think it's a bit quick to judge that the af is bad just on what you describe. Lastly, af always seems to be very controversial on anything that does not carry a Sony logo so I get why you wouldnt even say anything about it at all.

@motorcycle-man I said nothing controversial. She tests the af at f8 for gods sake. And even at f8 the camera hunted. That's terrible. And I don't even use Sony. I use Nikon and I film myself all the time at f1.4. Never did my camera miss me. I don't know what exactly you are defending her for. She wasn't honest and tried to hide the fact that the auto focus is thrash. This is called manipulating.

Lovely review. I did pre-order the x-m5, but more to replace my trusted x70. I would pair it up with the 18mm/f2 for AF shooting and with a Voigtlander 27mm/f2 for full manual/compact carry.

Great review about this camera, but I was wondering between this camera and Sony ZVE 10 Mark 2, which is better to start with. I’m interested more in filming but also I would like to shot some great photos.

Thank you! Personally, I’d recommend the Fujifilm X-M5. The video specs slightly outshine those of the Sony ZV-E10 II. The X-M5 offers 6.2K/30p, 4K/60p, and FHD/240p, which delivers stunning detail and you will have the added flexibility of slow-motion. You also have Fujifilms film simulations which are great for both stills and video! Hope this helps :)

I loved your review but the only part that is wrong is the auto focus, as you can seei it didnt focus on you it focused on the background instead. I am not sure why did you say the auto focus worked when clearly didnt work in a very simple scenario. It looks like this camera has same bad auto focus as my xt5 and xh2 :(

Hey! Thanks 😊 You’re totally right; in the AF test, I didn’t have an ND filter to allow for a wider aperture, which limited the autofocus performance at f/8 (fault on my part). My comment was based on real-world use-during filming in other settings, I found the autofocus was generally reliable. While the test footage doesn’t fully showcase it, my broader experience was positive, with good focus tracking in most conditions. Hope this clarifies things, and thanks for your feedback!

You need to use F16 because AF isn't reliable here like you see in this static scene when you do 360. Why you don't use 2.8? 5.6?

8:20 Why do you say it isn’t reliable? The example shows how the Eye / Face detect AF works and it works exactly as it should - defaulting to Olivia’s head when her eye is out of focus and then grabs her eye immediately as she turns back around. It’s shot at F8, not F16 (you can see the settings and the AF at work in the screen recording).

​​​​​​​@@WilkinsonCameras That's the thing, the eye box clearly moves to the side on to the background next to her head, because the ai tracking is expecting the eye to move there due to the faulty algorithm. It then first focuses on the background, because that's where the eye box ends up to be. After that it goes back to the head and eye, but only once she touches the eye box with her head, thus forcing the camera to reconsider. When she turns back again, the focus is acquired quickly which is of course very good. The short backfocusing could be a one time thing though, but nothing can be said without proper testing or final firmware. That's one of the issues that many were already criticizing about Fujis ai algorithm on the X-H2S and other bodies, because it started doing this on recent firmware updates. On the initial firmware, these issues did not exist. I just really hope this is not what is to be expected from the upcoming firmware updates. But then again, I won't judge the AF performance by this short clip.

The problem isn't that this is happening, as we are already used to this video AF with the latest firmware. The problem is that the video doesn't acknowledge it, even says it works as described. It clearly isn't. And again, because many just claim we are hating, this was not an issue on the very first firmware versions on X-H2(s) and X-T5.

Not exactly, they are different lines of products, although they are quite similar in several regards (sensor, button layout, battery life). The X-E4 has a viewfinder, the X-M5 does not. The X-E4 display is higher resolution and doesn't flip to the side. So the X-E series is a little more photography first, the X-M is slightly more entry level with a focus on social media and content creation features. However, the X-M5 has a newer processor witht the latest AI autofocus modes and film simulations, so for those, who don't need a viewfinder, it might still feel like an upgrade to the X-E4. There are rumours that there will be a proper X-E5 maybe next year, but it is not official yet.

I really like the price, the compactness and the film simulations but I have never used a Fuji. Comparing the two cameras from a photographic point of view what do you recommend? Thanks!

Great review, looks a good camera for anyone wanting something small but with great IQ , ideal for walkers, or street photographers who want something small. The great video is the big bonus for what looks like an all round great buy for anyone who wants to get into serious video or just a great camera to take out when walking the dog to catch that great sunset. Price also seems spot on .

No IBIS, deal breaker for me. Furthermore, (or should I say, furtherless), no EVF, less customizable dials, smaller battery... Still think X-S20 remains the best hybrid camera from Fujifilm at relatively low price.

I have been using the XM-1 as a second hand find online for the last two years and I can tell you that the XM line is really a remarkable piece of machinery. The lack of an EVF doesn't bother you after the first few times you pick up this compact body. One thing I'm looking forward to in the XM-5 vs the XM-1 is the screen that can pop out for Vlogging and the touchscreen capabilities are going to be great. #NewFufjiFilmFanBoy

@@fais_ireland the resolution isn’t really the hero of the story here. Sensor resolution isn’t always important - in this case it’s a pretty standard size for an all-rounder sensor. Hence most people won’t be focussing on that as a key feature.

Not sure about the benefits of this camera, if you are into photography in my opinion the XT30 mark II would be a better option at just another 45grams according to my scales at home. Also Fuji continue to issue more models without for filling customer needs like the Fuji X100Vi which is not fair to genuine amateur photographers. I do like Fuji owning an XE3 ( same weight as the XM5) the XPro 1 and the XT30 mark II. In the past I have owned the X100F and XF10, so I’m not anti Fuji. For many months I had a deposit for the X100Vi but yesterday I withdrew my £990 deposit because the I saw no chance of ever owning one without paying a large extra payment for a so called used camera. I enjoyed your video and my complaint is with Fuji’s reluctance to ensure ordinary amateur photographers get their cameras they would like.

To answer your question about the X100VI availability - yes, it’s maddening! But the X-M5 will be a different production entirely as it has quite different internals and build. Fujifilm have just recently completed another production line for the X100VI which will see production ramp up significantly and bring those long waits down dramatically. It will still take some time to clear the backlog, but we hope to see existing customer orders cleared by the end of the year. Fujifilm were obviously massively caught out by the demand for the X100VI and unfortunately setting up production lines and runs isn’t an overnight job. We do hope to see this model become more available in 2025 though - especially as I personally want to own one… but I won’t place an order until all our customer orders are filled! - Alex | Wilkinson Cameras
