REVIEW | Kia EV6 - What's all the fuss about!?

John Marcar wanted to see why the Kia EV6 seems to be causing such a stir amongst his media colleagues and journalists. After all, it’s just another family car, right?
Kia sent John their GT-Line S RWD version of the car to let him find out for himself and in this video, we find out what all the fuss really is about.

It’s not a GT-Line spec. It’s a GT-Line S due to the panoramic roof and 20” wheels so the range won’t be the furthest compared to the GT-Line with 19” tyres.

Why charge to 100%? It takes much longer from about 80-100%. Better to stop once more as it will reduce your journey time.

You've actually got a GTL-S there, which is the one with all the toys, powered boot, sunroof, Meridian sound system, heated rear seats, heated and cooled front seats, dash display of side mirrors etc, which costs about £4k more than the GTL.

Nice video 👍😊 I will however, join your colleagues in saying that you should take the GT out for a spin. 😜 It may surprise you in the same way this EV6 RWD did. The ride is not necessarily more bumpy, but is in some cases even more comfortable than the other versions, due to the adaptive suspension… and it’s actually quite fun to drive. 👍😃

The best part of this car is the ability to pre-condition the battery thru the nav system to your DC charger and it will max out the 150kW charger. The rest is icing on the cake and it is a great car. Will charge up to 235kW even in cold weather. Makes those stops relatively short.

Except if you are in a Model Y, the car will precondition the battery as you approach the SuperCharger. The EV6 cannot do that, yet.

Charging an EV is not quite like fueling a car... what you did is the equivalent of fueling a Ferrari with 120 Liters of tank at a 2 stroke moped fueling pump.. It can handle up to 250 kw charging power which leaves you at a charging speed from 10% to 80% of under 18 minutes. That`s what you usually charge those carse when on the road. Charing it to 100 is always only done at home the night before you go on a road trip. This has to do with the fact, that charging the last 20% of an EV Battery takes just as long as charging it from 0 to 80%...

We all agree the system, process and the infrastructure has a long-long way to go until it's anywhere near perfect.

@@driven.videosit has but the point he’s making is that you can charge much faster with the existing infrastructure. If you had set that charging point as a destination on the nav to warn the car, it would have pre warned the battery. You would then have had 150kW charging 3x as fast. On the road you top up to 80% not 100% and it’s much faster, 18 minutes to 80% I’ve done that frequently, you hardly have time to drink your coffee, Also, definitely you should try an EV6 GT it’s crazy fast!

Could you power your house with this? I’m thinking you can charge the car at night at home on off-peak EV rates (less than 10 pence per KW/h) and then get it to power the house during peak rates? If so, that would be something line a 3x saving on the electricity bill.

No. The V2L adapter is power-limited. You need a bi-directional charge point with a thick cable...

I like the review, but for a serious journalist I'd expect a bit a basic knowledge about EV driving and charging, and - I'm sorry to say this - that lacks from this review, which gives a significantly different picture than if the journalist would have had this basic knowledge. I would have expected a serious journalist to at least collect some basic information. The EV6 can take up to 240 kW charging speed. Charging at a 150kW charger is like using a jerry can to fill up a luxury car, walking to the nearest petrol station for every 5 liters when the can is empty: for a report about the possibilities of this car it makes no sense. Also: prepare the battery before charging. Don't charge at a fast charger to 100%, but 80%. All this lack of basic knowledge makes the review for an EV senseless.
