The Nikon D700 was a professional full-frame DSLR released in July 2008. It sported the same 12.1-megapixel, Nikon-made sensor as 2007’s Nikon D3, making it only the second full-frame digital camera produced by the company. Before their release, Canon dominated the DSLR market, releasing its first full-frame camera in 2002 with the Canon EOS-1Ds. Nikon was no minor figure in the camera market by any means - after all, the release of the D1 in 1999 was the launching point for the rise of mainstream digital cameras
The Nikon D700 is Nikon’s first affordable full-frame (FX) camera, with 12 megapixels and amazing low light performance. I have been shooting with the Nikon D700 for the past three years, and I’m not sure why it took me so long to write a review of my favorite camera… I guess I focused so much on testing new lenses and cameras, that the gear I use every day for my photography has been just sitting at the end of my long “to-do” list. I am thinking of reversing the list right now, starting from the bottom and writing about other gear that I currently use and used in the past and share my subjective opinion about it.

The D700 wins for just about everything, especially action and taking pictures of your friends, family and kids. The D700 has superior autofocus performance over the Canon 5D Mark II. The 5D Mark II's AF system is inferior for photographing moving kids in dim light. All my D700 shots made with a 50mm f/1.4 indoors are just about perfect, most of my 5D Mark II shots made with a 50/1.4 USM just can't nail the focus because the 5D Mark II lacks the face recognition of the D700. The D700 magically focuses on a moving kid's nearest eye, while the 5D Mark II usually mis-focusses on his shirt, sleeve or background. At f/2, depth of field is so narrow that most of my 5D Mark II photos are useless for moving kids. Who needs 21MP if they're out of focus?
