Having lived in Wales for a year, I was pleased to see you bringing this point predominantly into your review shedding light on Gwynne's intentions and highlighting other reviewers' misinterpretation of it being about Vikings. Also, your pronunciation sounded just like all the welsh bloke around me all the time while I was there, so nice going!

Thanks, Danny! I spent only one summer in Wales back in 1992, but I went with the intention of learning Welsh, which I did through an immersive program. It was a blast! Vikings are cool too, but this series isn’t about them.

I'm soooo happy you enjoyed malice!! Not gonna lie, I enjoyed the quartet so much I read it within 5 days, and book 3 ruin, I read in a day! Seriously, the quality of the books only get better as the series progresses and he cemented himself as one of my top 3 currently active writers today. His sister trilogy of blood and bone is just as good so there's a lot to look forward lol. I cant wait to hear what you think of the rest of the series, because I love to hear your analytical deep dive of the stories you read and the insights that I somehow seem to overlook at times are brought to the forefront, which I can really appreciate! Such a wonderful review. Also, I didn't know people call this series Viking inspired! It's really not. Paradise Lost by John Milton is one, and Celtic is the definite influence; you're right, Cywen is pronounced with a 'K' instead of 'Sai'. So cool that you know all these, I had to research and ask him about it! Also, the blend of classic and modern fantasy (no grimdark, though) is a very apt analysis of the series which I can agree with.
@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy
@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy 4 жыл бұрын
Ah, yes, I can see the influence from Paradise Lost now that you mention it. Of course I saw the duality of the Creator god and the evil/fallen power, but Milton’s influence is even more specific. I’m so glad you enjoyed the video!

Fascinating to learn about the Celtic influences in Malice. I probably would have thought "vikings" like most others if not for you sharing your expertise here. I am curious about the connection with the magic cauldron as well as other aspects of Celtic myth. Sounds intriguing. This is a very popular series right now though I've heard many, like you, say that it takes at least 200 pages to get invested in that first book. I hope you enjoy the rest of the series!

When the first brought up the shield wall, I was reminded of how much it was used in Bernard Cornwell's The Last Kingdom. I've read the 1st 3 books in that series and the shield wall was used in all of them. That series is Viking but also the five kingdoms that eventually make up England. Including Wales. Really love that series and Malice seems to be in a similar vein.

Diolch, Steve! When I was 19, I studied Welsh on my own for a year before heading to Wales for a summer to be immersed in the language. It was through the University of Wales in Lampeter. One of the best experiences of my life, and I was nearly fluent by the end. Unfortunately, my Welsh is pretty rusty now since there aren’t many speakers here in the United States, but I occasionally try to keep it up with Duolingo. I’ll always love the sounds of the language and the myths and old stories.

Great review, Philip! I read this one I think last year or the year before (just brb'ed to check and it was March 2023 according to Goodreads) and although I gave the book 3 stars immediately after finishing it, I haven't really stopped thinking about it and have actually been meaning to return. I enjoyed the characters quite a bit and loved the worldbuilding (very interesting giants finally!) but there was something to be desired when it came to the prose. I would say half the book felt perfect but then the other half felt so sloggy but that might have just been my preferences when it came to the POVs and whether I wanted to get someone else's POV instead which I sometimes do when reading. I did hear that each book gets better and better so I was thinking of reading The Shadow of the Gods and its sequel to see if I enjoy that more and if so then I'll finish this trilogy off. I do recall that the Shadow of the Gods is a new series disconnected so there shouldn't be any problems going back to it hmm. I hope you're having a fantastic day and see you in the next one!

@@christianshobbiblog1816 I definitely feel that Gwynne has worked on his writing craft, and that it shows in the prose from book to book. Ruin (book three) is a step up in that regard, and I think his best work so far is indeed in The Bloodsworn Saga. All the best, Christian!

I may be late to the Party, but in an interview with Mike from «Mike’s Book Reviews», Gwynne stated that among his favorite fantasy-series growing up was «The Chronicles of Prydain» by Lloyd Alexander. Especially «The Black Couldron» feature a similar artifact to the Couldron you mention from both «Malice» & Welsh Mythology. Alexander served in Wales during WW2 as an intelligence officer, and based CoP on his time there and «The Mabinogin», which for the X- & Millenial Generation is best known from its Disney Adaption.

Not going to lie, the description of it being action packed and relentlessly paced makes me apprehensive. I’m still going to give the book a try because I have owned it for years and not gotten around to reading it. And I found everything you were saying about celtic vs Viking/Nordic very interesting. I honestly don’t know much about that subject and it’s probably something I should spend a little time learning about as a fantasy fan lol. But I found everything you said so interesting. If you want some celtic inspired stuff that is probably the complete opposite of Malice, Juliet Marillier’s Sevenwaters trilogy is one of my favorites and is advertised as celtic inspired (tho given the fact that I know next to nothing about real Celtic lore, I don’t know how much inspiration it actually takes haha). Book 1 isn't too intense, in my opinion. It sets the scene and helps get the reader familiarised, and emotionally attached, to the characters. Also agree that contra most conventional reviewers, who conflate the Matter of Britain with Celtic myth, and/or mislabel Tolkien's influences as Celtic when he borrowed most (outside Arthur) from the Finns and Germanic myths, authentic Celtic influences have been minimal in fantasy, and rarely go beyond the Fae as a concept. So it'd be nice to see what Gwynne does with them. Thanks again!

Very well done review. I'm reading this one right now and while I'm enjoying it, it hasn't pulled me in fully yet. I hadn't realized the Celtic inspiration but I've no idea where the Viking stuff comes from lol. Maybe from the raiders? But so far that's a small part. One thing I'm having trouble with is the names. Some are easy to remember, like Kastell, Veradis, Nathair. Some are hard to remember, like several people's names start with Br or C, including kingdoms and important people. Hopefully I'll get used to them, but I'm bad with names anyways. I'm not fully in with Corban's story yet, seems very tropey so far, but the other, more original stuff, is keeping me interested

Mediocre writing and tropes we've seen a lot describe a shallow world and pretty bland characters. Now the writing, tropes and worldbuilding aren't that big a problem - it actually supports the fast pace, and all that can grow in the next installments. The characters are the biggest drawback for me, they didn't grow beyond their archetypes and didn't draw me in. It's not a bad book, and I will get to the sequel eventually, but so far it remains somewhere in middle-of-the-road limbo. The additional background of Celtic myths, and guesses for the next books, those were interesting and right up your alley! The Mabinogion has been on my tbr since you mentioned it in your origins of fantasy video.

The prose is not fancy, for sure. I think the best way to go into The Faithful and the Fallen would be the same way I approach Dresden Files- as light and entertaining reading with a fast pace, and as a break from the deeper stuff, like Erikson and Hobb. With those expectations in place, you might enjoy FatF more. Plus, I’m a sucker for almost anything Celtic!

Is this the best place to start with Gwynne?

Probably it is. You could also start with his latest trilogy, Bloodsworn, which has two books out. Though it’s not finished yet, I think his writing has grown even better.

Celtic inspired, now this is something that I didn't know, will try to learn some basic stuff about it. Malice is a good story if you are reading it for mere entertainment as you rightly said the characters don't have moral greyness to them and I think that made the story little two shallow for the readers who looks for some deep and complex theme in a novel

The series is definitely entertaining, which is cool, but it does gain depth with the last couple books as well. Gwynne actually surprised me in a good way with his handling of some of the tropes starting in Ruin. Is it theme driven? I don’t think so. But the themes do appear, and I had a load of fun and even found myself attached to characters.

@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy that's interesting, I didn't mean this book is bad or something it's a really amazing book and it had me completely invested by the end. So yeah I will read the other books in FATF series.🙃

I'll be sure to check out Celtic mythology and history before reading this one. The only Celtic figure I know a lot about is Glendower.

Owain Glendower is still somewhat of a hero to many in Wales, where resistance to English occupation lasted a long time. The old myths are beautiful, in my opinion, and if you read them, I hope you’ll love them!
