Back to the River Exe to try out my bargain £10.90 Maxcatch WF4 floating line from Amazon. I started with the 3 weight line to match my rod but it felt a little light and struggled with a downstream wind and didn't feel like it was loading the rod. I went back a few days later with a 4 weight line that I then bought and it felt a perfect match for my rod. And at last I managed to find some trout that were willing to rise, despite the weather still being too cold and that persistent downstream breeze.
So in my amateur opinion, these lines are fantastic for their price, I'm not shooting line 50 yards out, I'm fishing with maybe 25-30 foot of line out so I need something smooth, delicate, no cracks and no memory. The next test is how long they last.....

Maxcatch are decent gear. I have a few pieces of theirs including tenkara rods. They just prove that it doesn't need to cost 500 quid to catch a fish. Great video as usual.

Hi WCA. Commented a few weeks back that I was getting a 2/3wt. to target the brownies in the local stream. All set up and I've been hammering them, from pheasant tails nymphs in the riffles, streamers under the roots and my favourite method, dry flies. Like you I am a big fan of the Elk hair caddis but on one particular session I found that the brownies were swatting the fly without properly taking. So I tied the same style up with Roe deer hair (darker) on a size 16 wide gape. More closely mimicked the local hatch and the trout went mad for it; 6 in a couple of hours to 10". Excellent for the local brook. Though I'd share the knowledge with a kindred sprit. Thanks for your vids. Always enjoy them for 'keeping it real'.

It’s funny how just a subtle change can make them more confident. My little stream has definitely been more cooperative with rises than the larger River Exe down here. I’m hoping after this rain the weather will break and get the trout rising there

Hi Paul, I use maxcatch and find them great sorry to tell you I sold 10ft #3 on ebay two weeks back and it made £27 , not being so tall I found it was a bit too much for me, rarely a rise here and so still on nymphs

Thanks Michael. This weekends video will reveal that it wasn’t as bad as I thought with my rod

It's difficult to know whether lines these days are true to weight without checking grain weights. Even then, it's no grauantee they'll work with a particular rod. There's an interesting Kelly Galloup KZbin vid' on the topic, in which he argues that line manufacturers began to over-weight lines so they would be easier to cast, prompting rod manufacturers to beef up rods to deal with them. That and the fashion for rods to be built faster/stiffer has led to a situation where today's 4wt is equivalent to yesterdays 5 wt and so on. Makes sense. Nice grayling. Seems the better ones always turn up out of season.

Hi Laurie. I agree with you. Fortunately as the Maxcatch line is so cheap, experimenting with the different weights isn’t a big investment. Thanks for watching and for the really interesting comment. I’ll take a look at that video

I’m just starting to get into fly fishing I don’t know much about it watching this I’m curious what the blue powder stuff is and what it’s for that your brushing on the fly ?

Hi Justin. Thanks for watching. It’s dry fly floatant powder. You brush it onto the fly to help it float so the fly acts like a natural insect. There is a link in the description

@@WestCountryAngler they cast nicely but when you rub your fingers on them the Finnish is not the same as a dear line. The welded loop opened in mine too
