It is 2023 and the 50th anniversary of The Dark Side of the Moon and it is being celebrates with a release of this live show. Quite unique in the Pink Floyd release history! But is it any good?

Good review! While listening, I was wondering how much post-processing editing & overdubs were done in the studio? Maybe they are trying the Who Live at Leeds approach? Maybe someday they’ll release a 5-LP 45rpm Miles Showell half speed mastered box of the entire show?

Thank you! And good question! I know that the BBC allowed for live overdubbing when songs where recorded in the studio (at least that was the case with The Beatles), I am not sure though what the approach was with recordings of live shows in front of an audience. I truly hope they will release the full show on 2 or 3 discs in the future. But I really hope it will not be a Abbey Road Halfspeed master, I have yet to hear a decent pressing come from that proces (let alone one that tops originals). For example I have the 3 disc Live At Leeds but it sounds like nothing compared to the UK or German pressings I have. Nevertheless listening to that show in full is nice though!

I got mine today, for under 20 pounds you cant go wrong. Sounds great, lovely gatefold and free posters. Nobody needs to buy that stupid big box set especially during a recession!

I agree! I payed 21 euro’s for my copy and with those two posters, this nice gatefold and artwork that really is a bargain. The 290,- for the box is out of my league but to be quite frank it doesn’t contain anything I’m after and would buy if it would even cost 100,-. The only new interesting thing in it, is this vinyl for me.

@@FormulaProg that’s the thing, I heard that it is written only on the record itself (edit) under the three songs mentioned… which basically means fraud since they didn’t mention it anywhere that you’re paying more than a cd and get less media on the same product… if this is the case I prefer either to stay with the bootlegs or Spotify

Thank you! I just ordered mine and listened with excitement to your fantastic review with extra interesting facts and opinions about the band as well as the edition. However, I cannot agree with you that this edition perhaps lacks other songs from their repertoire at that time. Probably it would make this a "commercial act" which Pink Floyd usually used to avoid. I rather see this as a document, an extra dimension of their known work. Another way to experience something that was created a long time ago and played by creators much younger than today. The good thing about Pink Floyd is that it's not possible to create great expectations and sabotage the moment when it is time to hear the vinyl. Just the opposite, your review contributes the right conditions for an even greater enjoyment of their art.

I have quite a few bootleg versions of this show. I have an unofficial Japanese mini LP style cd called “BBC Live 1974” that includes the whole Darkside live (second set) and the Echoes encore. It’s the same show and it sounds amazing. I wish they would have chosen a different show to release only because this Wembley 1974 show has been bootlegged so much.

Wow! Just listened to it! Awesome. There is a level of 'funk' and 'togetherness' not on the original. 'Any Colour You Like' is taken to another level. And Gilmour's solo on 'Money' is insanely good!!

@@gerardoerak6142 but with overall better mastering, better sound texture, in the case of OG’s pressings closer to the mastering, more interesting packaging and sometimes you can find audiophile sound for 5 bucks.

@@top5records796 The only thing that's better in LPs is the packaging...I certainly miss those LP sleeves. For example, I love the sleeve of the first king Crimson LP..the texture, the color. $5 Audiophile sound...Mmmmm...I don't think so. 🆒

You’re absolutely right about Ummagumma but I wouldn’t consider Pulse or Delicate Sound of Thunder real Pink Floyd live albums. To me the essence of Pink Floyd is not there when they perform without Roger Waters. I also think the entire production of the show with speeding up songs and the greatest hit setlist is far from what for example a ‘70s show was all about.

@@top5records796 Wow. Ok, so... is The Final Cut a "real Floyd album"? Are you aware of how many people heard both Gilmour-led Floyd live albums before getting to know the Gold Era? And from there, they learned their classics, including Syd-era stuff. So, yep, those are real live Floyd albums. For me, Guy Pratt is a Pink Floyd member as well; his performance, charisma, technique, vocals, arrangments, it all fits. He plays with Floyd, with Dave solo, with Nick Mason's Saucerful band, with Rick Wright.

Dude. It is the 50th anniversary of DSOTM not Wish You Were Here. Not sure why you would think the surviving members of Pink Floyd would have included songs from the other albums on this release even if they were performed when originally recorded.

@@top5records796 As a stand-alone complete live album I agree and I would also love that. But not as part of the 50th anniversary of DSOTM. Because it is the album that is being celebrated - not the tour.

imo the live versions are not even close to the epicness of the studio cut. the most interesting versions of dsotm were in 1972. the early versions. starting from 1973-onward the performances were kind of standard. i dont really like the little solo gilmour does at the beginning of breathe. id rather he play around with the leslie effect like he did in the album and early 1972 shows. the solo in time is good but not comparable to the album version imo.. the solo in money is great but the studio solo was better. but the worst thing about live dsotm is the great gig in the sky... all the live versions i ever heard were painful to listen to. claire torry's vocals in the studio sound otherworldly. live it sounds like a bunch of annoying screaming. when i heard the 73/74 live performances i was severely let down. but this is just my opinion.

I think it is impossible to recreate the vocals of The Great Gig In The Sky. And purely focussing on a preference for solo’s I understand your point. But doesn’t it amuse you to hear the original members try different variations and hear other takes of what it feels like live? I find that a very thrilling experience.

@@top5records796 for the time solo yes. i love the early 1972 time solos. maybe even better than the album version. i made a video about it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/maXLfpmOmN2HiZY however the 1973 and 1974 solos are all worse...so i always feel disappointed. in 1975 they played super extended versions of money. i really like the performances of money from 1975. but not really 73/74.
