Dear Peter, thank you for these great videos, you have no idea how happy you make me with these videos you make. Because off a accident during my work I'm handicapped and since 13 years I lie most off the day on my bed. Woodworking is/was my greatest hobby but because I'm handicapped now is woodworking almost entirely over for me and therefore your videos help me true the day and I look out for any new videos. I thank you very much for all the video you made and in future will make Schummie.

Excellent review, I have just bought one of these units marketed under the CarbaTec brand though it is the same machine you are reviewing. I am hopeless reading instructions however I have found your review very clear and self explanatory so well done.. Will be down in the workshop tomorrow with a lot more understanding of the machine. Thank you very much for posting this,.

Excellent review, Peter, thanks. You may want to add a note for any Americans that watch the video that what they consider to be a planer is what you refer to as a thicknesser, and what you call a planer is what they would call a jointer. It can be confusing!

Hi Peter Just paid for one today and should arrive on Friiday. As I work in a Mitre10 hardwear store here in Australia I was able to get it for $1.269.00 AU. Normal retail price is $ 1,700.00 AU. Can't wait to unwrap it. Would have also built one of your great looking mobile stands that you have built but have yet to purchase a bandsaw so ended up paying an extra $109.00 AU for a pre built mobile stand. Mabey next tax return I'll get a nice band saw. Also saw your review of the x-carver and that made my fingers itch! Keep up the great reviews Peter!

I have just done a quick check of the digital depth gauge... One turn is represented by an increase of 20 on the counter. Bear in mind that for me that represents a 2.0 mm rise or fall. The shaft size is 18 mm. The gauge needs 51mm of exposed shaft (between the surface it is bolted to and the height adjuster wheel/knob). Thank you for the supportive comments. Good luck. Peter

Dear Schummie, I am so happy that you like my videos - I try my best. When I look at the camera I imagine that I am talking to my very best friends and that includes you. Do let me know if there are any woodworking topics that interest you. I have a full schedule of filming between now and February but always like to know what people want to see. I can always include straight forward items in one of my Q&A videos. Take care. Peter

Hi Peter, I recently have purchased a predecessor of this PT Machine (AW106PT) the White range. I am now in need to buy a set of electronic setup gauges that you demonstrate in the video at 12:15 onwards. I can no longer find these on Axminster website, but I do hope that some other retailer would possibly have them in stock. Can you please shed some more information about them, Part numbers, etc. Many thanks. Keep up the good work. EV

Peter, enjoy your reviews as they are undiased, clear and informative.. Could you tell me how many turns to a milimeter rise there are on the machine? I would like to fit the digital counter to my universal machine and was wondering if the ratios were the same. Also thought that i could use the device on the spindle moulder ias a relative repeatable measure. Possibly with a small knob in place of the locking screw?

Very thorough review, thanks for taking the time to make this video. One thing that has me perplexed though is that on Axminister's website, the 106PT is marked as a Hobby series machine. Yours is clearly marked Trade. Did you get the model number wrong, or has Axminster now 'downgraded' this machine as it introduced newer models?
@NewBritWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
Axminster are making some big changes and the 106 falls into the new (uprated) hobby class. The hobby machines are moving up a gear as far as I can see. I think price range has something to do with it as well. Peter

Hi Pete, tomorrow I take delivery of my new planer thicknesser from Axminster :) I've been using a planer sled with my thicknesser for years so have a bit to learn using said planer thicknesser, one thing that worries me is the shortness of the beds when it comes to long boards, any tips?
@NewBritWorkshop7 жыл бұрын
Hi Ben, I used to try and plane a face side and edge on boards in lengths up to 4 m before thicknessing them. I then realised that most of the pieces that I use need to be no more than a metre in length. So I began cutting the sawn timber into shorter lengths and then trueing them up after that. It has made a huge difference to the overall accuracy and ease of planing. Peter

As usual an excellent review that has made me want one! I've had a DeWalt 1150 for many years that has given great service but it is time to upgrade to something better. More power, more precision and more capacity. All seemed to be covered by this bit of kit. I would like to go for the Jet but I think that may just be a bit to big. Anyway, just to say thanks again for the review, now where's the cheque book? Mike.

woodpecker225 Hi Mike, I bought the AW 106 even though I really wanted the Jet JPT 260. After seeing my review I was allowed to upgrade to the Jet at a Trade price. The Jet is a beautiful machine and worth the extra if you can manage it. Nevertheless, the AW106 will give you great service. The fence is quite heavy and it is not so easy to swap from planning to thicknessing as the Jet. Many thanks for the kind comments. Good luck with the decision and the purchase. Peter

Hi Peter, Great videos! Both the Jet and AW106 are out of my budget and it's still early days in my workshop (single uk garage!). Would you recommend the modern replacement of your old P/T, the Metabo HC260 as a good starting machine? it looks like it served you well
@NewBritWorkshop8 жыл бұрын
Hi Nigel, Yes, the Metabo looks good (they did take over Elektra Beckum) and the Record also looks good too. Peter
@digidandan5 жыл бұрын
How would you compare the electra beckum to a axminster jointer/thicknesser you’ve had in therms of a comfort of work,wood finish and general work impressions?
@NewBritWorkshop5 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel, Chalk and Cheese !! The Electra Beckum was all I could afford at the time and it took a lot of TLC to get it to produce reasonable and consistent results. My next planer was this one in the video which was far superior and better made. I since progressed to the Jet machine which I find, due to my arthritis, easier to change from thicknessing to jointing. Other than that the two machines each perform perfectly. Peter

Love all your videos Peter, thank you so much for sharing. I have just purchased an AW106PT2 and agree that it is a wonderful piece of kit. One question though; I purchased a Jet thicknesser depth guage like the one you show but Axminster no longer supply the backing plate and longer bolts so fitting it to the AW106 is going to be troublesome, do you have any thoughts on this please?
@NewBritWorkshop10 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, I am in the middle of some filming in The Netherlands and have no access to my still shots of the 106 - did I need to use a plate to fix the depth gauge? The longer bolts should be easy to solve. Peter
@paultaylor577110 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, It looked like a rubber "plate" with bolt holes in the appropriate place and a smaller hole into which fitted a "nipple" on the back of the unit. The allen screw was then fastened to grip the main shaft. Don't worry too much if you're busy, it can wait. I was just wondering if I had purchased the wrong item.. Have fun in The Netherlands; is it a new Bond film? Are you the evil Dr Festool??
@NewBritWorkshop10 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, Give Axminster a call and ask to speak to one of their technical people. I have spoken to them many times and they are very knowledgeable and extremely helpful. As I no longer have the 106 it may be difficult for me to help. I think that the Jet and Axminster depth gauges are different. Peter
@paultaylor577110 жыл бұрын
Many thanks O wise one; You are right, they look the same but have different part numbers. The correct one for the AW106PT2 is sku# 950686 which comes with the backing and longer bolts. Axminster are fantastic, I love them to bits - wouldn't go anywhere else.

I think having to remove the fence mount to remove the side panel is a pain and a big enough negative not to buy it IMHO. Having said this some of the features look good. It would have been interesting to actually see the wider boards going through to see how the planer coped.
@NewBritWorkshop9 жыл бұрын
Paul Gilfeather Hi Paul, I only had the 106 for a couple of months as I was given the opportunity to trade up to the Jet JPT260. The fence on the 106 is quite heavy and it was not its best feature. I do show the fence in reasonable detail in all 3 videos and people do need to make their own mind up about this. However, at the time it was the best value for money in its price range and may still be in that position. Many thanks for highlighting this. Peter

@NewBritWorkshop9 жыл бұрын
Jamie Phillips Yes, it is a solid bit of kit. If you can afford the Jet JPT260 then that is a really nice planer. Peter
@Jamieip9 жыл бұрын
The jet is out of the question, the Axminster is only £800 right now which is why i ask. Are there any other negatives about the planer you didn't mention in the video? What is table adjustment like? and will it run from an ordinary electrical socket in a house?
@NewBritWorkshop9 жыл бұрын
Jamie Phillips Hi Jamie, I was not sure of your budget and the AW106PT is almost half the price of the Jet. I really like the Axminster machine and it is a solid design and well made. The only negative for me (with severe arthritis) is the weight of the fence which to any normal person is a plus as it is very stable. The optional micro height gauge is better on the Axminster machine than the Jet. Get the tungsten blades if you can. Peter
@Jamieip9 жыл бұрын
I'd honstely only be using the planer side of things. I already have a nice Thicknesser, I just need a planer. But they all come as Planer/thicknessers over here. I haven't seen any individual planers in my budget that are to the same quality. I'm currently just using bench top machinery, and hoping this is going to be much more accurate.
@NewBritWorkshop9 жыл бұрын
Jamie Phillips Using it just as a planer is very easy and you will be delighted. I still recommend tungsten blades (and this goes for any planer). Good luck. Peter

+Olek Dav There is a chance that there will be similarities with other badged machines as there are very few factories in the world that make planning machines. Peter
@NewBritWorkshop8 жыл бұрын
+Olek Dav Yes, it does appear to be similar. Each company that buys these machines can specify the quality of build (mainly tolerances) and details such as paint finish and so on. The Axminster one had a cast iron fence. I do not think that Axminster sell this one any more and they have replaced it with an upgraded model. Peter

Good planer thicknessers are just way too expensive for the hobbyist. This one is 1600 with VAT just too unaffordable and even the craft version is 1300. Would be better if you could possibly steer us hobbyists in the direction of something good value for money

Hi Mike, I take your point and have covered the cheap and cheerful Hitachi hand-held machine: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXaYkmuGj7qWask and also the Axminster CT330 table top machine: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXXZmY2nr72tkJY But even the little Record PT260 is £900 ! Cheers. Peter
@mwest673 жыл бұрын
@@NewBritWorkshop Cheers Peter. Great videos by the way, its just a bit frustrating as most £400 planer thicknesser come with severe limitations (crappy fences etc) even the second hand market is expensive. Just makes it that much harder work with rough sawn lumber

"Digital display, its entirely mechanical". hmmm
@NewBritWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
Hi Christopher, Yes, technically, the display is analogue as it has a series of circular geared wheels. However, the graduations show metric measurements to 0.1 mm and it is without doubt a display of digits ! Do you know how to interpret the final digit of a true digital display ? Peter
