Used your link bro! Can't wait to get it, really like your openness in your videos, keep it up man. I've got the other two Beavercraft knives and modded them, not as skilled or extensive as your mods, but I'm just starting out getting into outdoor knives. I've got almost all of the BPS knives, got one OTW from Ukraine since it's not on Amazon, that's gonna be a wait. Thanks again for what you're doing on your channel!

Thank you so much! I try to be as honest, and straightforward as possible. My viewers, people, are what's important, not the manufacturer. I don't get as much free stuff, but my goal is to educate, and get people outside. I'm glad that you appreciate what I'm trying to do. Beavercraft, and BPS, are off to a great start, but I'd like to see them upgrade the steel, even if it's a premium line, and do some hard use, bushcraft oriented folders. The are some companies doing amazing things with folders, and strengthening them; combined with a great steel, and scandi grind, we can see something special. My mods are from trial and error. Buy yourself a good base(beavercraft BSH1 comes to mind), a harbor freight belt sander, and go to town. I draw my mods before starting, so that I have an end goal in mine, then I draw my lines on my knife with permanent marker. Remove the scales, and work them separately, leaving them oversized. Check your work often! I'm a stickler for this. One or two passes on the sander, then check. Keep your steel cool!!! One, or two, passes on the sander, then dip in warm water. If you start seeing color on your steel, you got it too hot. You don't want to mess with the temper. When you have something similar to what you had in mind, put the scales on, change to a high grit belt, and do the finishing work to make everything flush, and seamless. I have more tips, but this comment is too long, as it is. Any questions, and I'll be glad to help, if I can. Just remember; no knife is perfect, unless it's perfect for you; no one's opinion counts, except your own. We all have our own tastes, so only you can decide what's right for you. Thanks for watching, and subscribe, if you pick up what I'm putting down!

I checked it out, and it does look like BPS knives which is nothing wrong and prices are same,I found BSH 2,3,4 for $47 CDN pesos each... It's like BPS wants to create another brand under same umbrella 🌂... Don't worry people,it won't break...

It is actually 65Г (65G) soviet era spring steel. It is not exactly the same as 1066hc steel.
@lheastridge
@lheastridge Жыл бұрын
You are exactly right! 1066 is the closest American equivalent, and what I thought my viewers would be most familiar with. Also similar to the 65Mn that China is using. You definitely know your stuff! Thank you for watching, and for the excellent comment!

@@lheastridge properly treated, 65G steel outperforms 1095 in any aspect except initial hardness. But do you really need more than 61 for bushcraft/camping/survival knife?
@lheastridge
@lheastridge Жыл бұрын
Personally, I feel 61 is pushing the limit. I like my blades at around 58. I feel any harder, is likely to snap, with the abuse that my knives take. That said, this has definitely made me curious about 65g spring steel, and my next purchase will be made from it, though I prefer a 5-6" blade, and around 4mm thickness. Do you know of other brands using this steel? Do you have a favorite brand, or model, that you prefer?

In Ukraine, the manufacturer "Bila Zbroya" uses 65-G steel for knives. The thickness of the blade is 6 mm. But their tactical and military knives are completely different :)

Another company from Kharkiv, BBKnives, used to actively use steel 65-G. But now, for obvious reasons, their website is dominated by military knives.

Back in the first few days of February, I was looking around Beavercraft's website and came across the BSH3. At that time they weren't available on Amazon or even listed anywhere stateside. There were also no KZbin videos on them and very little information on them available. The knives were $39.99 with free shipping and, on a lark, I bought one. It took almost three weeks to arrive from Ukraine, but I'm happy with it for the price and wait. Interestingly enough, my BSH3 doesn't have screws holding on the handle; it has a single brass pin near the bolster area and a matching lanyard tube near the butt, so the scales are permanently mounted. The fit and finish are perfect aside from a minor issue with the wood near the end of the tang where the bottom of one of the scales was sanded slightly more than the other. The edge is also a very slightly convexed scandi grind with a small microbevel along the very edge. All in all, I'm happy with it, even for the forty bucks I have into it, and I am glad the handle scales are pinned on, not screwed on. I did sand the finish off the handle, which I believe was some variety of clear varnish, and I added walnut finish Danish Oil to bring out the color and grain of the wood, but otherwise I wouldn't change a thing about it except to make the blade slightly thicker at ⅛" and to change the steel to something with a higher carbon content. Thanks for the video.

Thank you! I hope they continue making bushcraft knives! I know I'd love to see them do a folder. Thanks for watching!

@@lheastridge I agree. A cheaper (as in much cheaper) option to the ESEE Pinhoti folder would be great. If you're looking for a true Scandi ground folder, Cold Steel's Finn Wolf is a great knife to try. Not very bushcrafty, grind aside, but it's a well executed and handy cutting tool nonetheless.

I've actually been looking at that one, as well as the Gerber Mansfield. I really want the Condor Krakatoa, but figured I'd try a cheaper option first

thanks for the awesome review, i got one of the BSH1 the handle fit me better. these knives are very sharp and retain a good edge, i pounded the hell out of a seasoned white oak limb i had some minor chips but re sharpen was a breeze and took out all of the burs.. this is a very good deal on these knives.

Just got mind and I agree. Needs to be thicker. It's just a tad bendy for a bushcrafter but a good knife nonetheless. Edge does need some slight honing but not bad. Great deal for sure.
@lheastridge
@lheastridge Жыл бұрын
If they double the thickness, upgrade to 1075, or my preference,1095, and even double the price,I think they'd have a gem, possibly a gold mine. A bushcraft "SRK"," RAT","Bk2", "BSH3X2". The type of knife that defines the future of a company. Just my personal opinion, but I don't know a knife guy that would pass on it. As it stands, it's still a budget beast. Thanks for the comment, and for watching!

@East Ridge Outdoors And the 60-62 hrc for this steel is interesting also. I would think 58 would be standard but I'll see how it holds up.

What dye did you use? Looks awesome. I made mine scandi to zero and add a second convex bevel. Cits like hell now …
@lheastridge
@lheastridge Жыл бұрын
I used rit dye with a small amount of hot water. If you try it, be sure to clamp the scales to keep them flat. Don't clamp them too tight, or you'll flatten both sides. Thanks for watching!
