Review of the Canon 15x50 Image Stabilized Binoculars for astronomy and more

I've owned a pair of these for many years and they are truly my go-to piece of equipment for sky gazing. I can't imagine using binocs without image stabilization after using these. All four of Jupiter's largest moons are clear and bright. The Pleiades are brilliant. The moon is stunning. You won't be disappointed.

Are the rubber eye cups soft and flexible. I have the the 12x36 and they have really nice eye cups. Thanks

What strap are you using are there are they magnetic.

They’re Peak Design anchors :)

They look cool, but they are not magnetic. They slide down and click into the housing where you attach the strap. They are useful if you have a case that doesn't have room for the strap in it like inthis gentleman's case.

How would you compare these binoculars with stabilisation on to a 7x50 Nikon OceanPro that doesn't have stabilisation? Would the former be as good as the latter? I'm asking because I have shaky hands and I find the Nikon Trailblazer 8x25mm too shaky.

I couldn’t say since I’ve not owned the Nikons, but I can say the Canons will be very helpful if you have shaky hands.

I’ll say that once you’ve used stabilized binoculars, you won’t go back. Even if non-stabilized binoculars have better optics, that advantage doesn’t outweigh stabilization. With non-stabilized optics, you can look at things, but with stabilized, you can STUDY them.

Hi Rob, I've heard up to 8-10 hours for the lithium ones. I have yet to replace mine and they've been in it for ~3 years now (I check them periodically, even though lithium batteries aren't typically ones that leak).

How much magnification would be needed to see the rings of Saturn? Would the 18x50s resolve them? I'm debating the purchase of some binoculars for general use and astronomy and it seems that the 10x30 and 15x50 Canon IS pairing is serving people very well.

Not sure why he said that. The rings of Saturn are visible with the 8x30s I have. Granted small, but it's obvious to neophytes even.

@@rfcdgaf Depends on what you consider visible to mean. The rings at low magnification are mere protrusions, bumps at the edges of the disc. But yes, discernible.

To see the rings well, 25 to 30X.. To see Saturn like a fried egg or a flying saucer, less magnification.

I have the 18x50mm canon binoculars, you can see the rings of Saturn with them in two ways, first you will see the rings as two protrusions, when I sit in a reclining chair, I look and wait for the air to stabilize, usually it's only for several seconds, but when steady, what I can see is two little black spots between the planet and rings, very small but seen not glimpsed, but it's very small for sure !! And you can see what angle the rings are tilted, easily, I've had an 8 inch and 7 inch scopes so I know what to look for, I'm a binocular astronomer only now, it's so much easier to see and find dso's.

Sticky soft-touch plastic is all eroding after dozens of years. This is a well-known problem, how many devices I had, from mouse to phone, everything was sticky. The stickiness is wiped off with white spirit or lighter gasoline.

Yep, I've heard. My 15x50s are ~7 years old and remain ok so far, but on borrowed time I'm sure. Curiously, I have some Pentax bins from 2005 and they remain perfectly fine... wonder why.

Depends on the Rubber, I have Steiners since 1999 and Fujis since 2006 and not have become sticky.

Canon binoculars are not superior with their stabilization as Fujinon TS-X , I have them both and Fujinon is beating Cannon 10 times

@@billmakdesi7436 Sorry I did not see your question I have Canon 18x50 IS UD 3,7* all weather I was very satisfied till I got Fujinon 14x40 4* you can't even compare how this Fujinon stabilizer works Cannon is in the dust.

@@skhochay I agree that Fuji's stabilization is better, but I think the Canon glass is better.
