Hi Bungzy! Let me start by saying that i really enjoy your videos. I think you offer quick and factual information without lots of fluff. That being said, in the future i suggest that instead of using the word "warm" to describe a jacket you instead provide something like a temp range. for example, I agree that the UL Thermawrap is not warm enough for walking around in the city when the temps drop into the 20's. However, i have found the jacket to be "warm" when hanging around camp with temps ranging from the 30's to 40's.

So good to get a gear review that emphasises the distinction between thru hiking agendas and non thru hiking agendas. It gives a more realistic review of the ultra light 'warm stuff'.

Excellent video. I have seen many video's by you and I like them a lot as the product reviews are thoughtfully done with a coverage on real world usage rather than typical product review strategy just mention features and "superlatives" This video made a lot of sense to me.

Thanks for an honest review! So refreshing from all the videos out there just saying how great every product is.

‘Superlative’ survey of these active wear synthetic jackets & reasoned critique of marketing gimmicks in the industry. I agree that they are a great choice instead of a mid-layer fleece. Your content is top notch.👊🏾

Anyway to get a bungzys ultralight sticker? Love the channel and the logo! Very informative no fluff reviews!!

I agree with your review, but I think that wearing active outerwear does require a little change in strategy. I have not worn this montbell but I do use a Patagonia airshed windshell. Using my hiking shirt, a lightweight fleece (8.1 Oz) and the airshed I can comfortably walk into the upper 30s. The problem I have with traditional puffies is that I cannot hike in them. Even with temps in the 30s and only a lightweight hiking shirt on I am going to sweat if I'm wearing a traditional puffy, they just don't breathe well enough.

@@Bungzy and yet you see so many thru hiker videos where they're hiking in their puffies to stay warm
@BlueBoyBackpacking5 жыл бұрын
Bruce Kiefaber yep- that's probably because that's all they have got for a warm layer so they just have to do it and take the discomfort of overheating and sweating that comes with it.

I appreciate your insight on this man, the nuance here is important. I just bought this jacket as a UL thru hiking jacket. First thoughts are that it is goofy as fuck and the sizing is huge ahaha

Good critique Bungzy. Yep, I came to same conclusion using it over the last 2 months hiking in Cold Tasmania. It is an excellent Jacket for when on the move. I find it blocks wind pretty well - but you say not so much. But you need a 2nd layer of insulation for around camp and standing around in cold weather - like a UL puffy, then put the Thermawrap over the top. I will do a follow up review also. Here is my First look if interested kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3KYkp6EZrueeMU . BB Out.

I own this product & honestly I couldn’t agree more with you. It’s an AMAZING active layer but not ideal for just sitting around

Greetings from Hong Kong! Thanks so much for your detailed explanation. May I kindly ask if there is a huge difference between the normal non-ultralight version and ultralight of Montbell's thermawrap ? Which one would you recommend for versatile use?
@The_One-Eyed_Undertaker2 жыл бұрын
The Active Insulation concept was first introduced by the Arc'Teryx Atom LT. Patagonia Nano Air came much later.

I really appreciate your perspective. I'm trying to find a jacket to cut colder weather that might strike while backpacking. It's so very helpful to think of this as an "active" jacket on par with fleece. I'll keep researching and will also keep my eye on the Rab Xenon-X that you recently reviewed, too. Oh, and you've gotten a few thumbs up and a subscription from me. You are doing good stuff for us internet strangers.

Thanks for the heads up! Along with a wool hiking shirt, I always carry a merino baselayer and a rain jacket. Those in combination with this should suffice.

It's the first time I hear the honest-to-goodness terms of "super hyped" and "BS" for these UL synthetic jackets. I most certainly agree with all of them. I have experienced it first hand (although not with the thermawrap jacket) and I realized that, yes, they only promise to deliver when you are actively moving. Kudos, and more power to you!
@RichRich19553 жыл бұрын
Just got one. It's definitely not a puffy. I've yet to find an ideal use for it. I did want a hooded and light parka. The synthetic is a plus for fast drying. I do feel the need to get a wind parka to put over it.

Thermawrap Parka or Rab Xenon? Many thanks in advance and congrats on such amazing and reliable content.

Lol I switched to exactly this system for these exact reasons after getting my Atom LT. Paired with a hooded down vest it's a low volume 20oz combo good to the twenties, so far. Thanks for this vid.

What size do you wear? Mind sharing your chest/waist dimensions? The Parka is a good fit and I seem to be in-between sizes with Montbell
