A few weeks ago, the forclaz jacket was on sale at my local Decathlon. I remebered your review from last year, so i bought it for 45;- € , wich is about the same in Dollars at the moment. Until now i am very satisfied. Trank you for the hint and keep up your awesome Workshop. Greetings from Germany.

Thanks Dan, you inspired me to take action and upgrade from my Uniqlo puffer (cheap, synthetic fill but still quite a capable jacket). I dropped $90 on the Decathlon Forclaz Trek 100, 23°F Real Down Packable Puffer. Some thoughts after a couple days use... 1. it's light and warm, 2. the fit is about right; I'm reliably a men's medium (5'7", 155lb) and while body and arm length are perfect, the girth is on the slim side, 3. the fill is "responsibly sourced" duck down, which I can believe given the country of origin and the prominence of duck on the menus there, 4. there are two zippered outside pockets for your hands and that's it, no inside pockets, 5. the hood is thoughtfully contoured so with the zipper zipped right up, the wind doesn't de-hood you in two seconds, 6. it's packable, but there's no stuff bag included. Like it. Good recommendation thank you.

Love the Forclaz Trek 100. I’m not a hiker but I bought one for myself for the cold UK winter, and weeks later went back to Decathlon and got a second one 🤣 Now have one with a hood and one without. I still have a Rab Nebula Pro, which I got in 2020. Albeit that’s still an awesome jacket I’m half tempted to just sell it! After getting the Forclaz one I couldn’t see why I’d need anything else!

I was not aware that they even had Decathlon in the US. I bought the jacket he mentioned a while ago and am very satisfied. Here in Europe it costs about €50 I think. It is of course not nearly as warm as a thick down jacket, but for autumn or for use in combo with other layers, as a super light jacket, it is great to stuff into your backpack for long runs in winter, for skiing, for hikes, etc. A great way to stay warm after finishign a long run or ski, after you have sweated and need to not cool down too much. In case no one has already mentioned- the huge hood (on any of these) is of course for the helmet for climbers. Without the oversizing, the hood is useless to those wearing helmets. So it's a good thing.

For most people, the Decathlon is the choice. Money saved can go into other gear that is arguably more important when benefit per dollar is considered. Better pack, better sleep system, better layers, etc. Nice to see some good stuff still coming out of Cumulus, too. The Montbell looks perfect for someone who avoids every form of vegetation on the planet, and goes nowhere near a wood burning fire. Should also avoid wearing it while backpacking. 7D nylon is just asking to be poked and torn on every single sharp object that exists.

I saw an older review back in 2023 on the Decathlon Trek 100 I bought it after watching your video. I put it to the test in November 2023 for a trek in Nepal. I did the Annapurna circuit and did the Thorong La Pass. The pass was very cold it was during the shoulder season of fall/winter so the temperature was not below freezing yet but the wind chill made it feel like it was. Actual temperature during the day in the Pass was around 25 - 28 Degree F. I wore a wind/rain proof outer shell with the decathlon jacket underneath along with a fleece and many layers and it did pretty well on the Thorong La Pass. As long as I moved around I kept warm it was still cold but manageable. Once I sat still to rest my feet I felt the freezing wind chill and that wind hit my face and I felt it. We didn't stay in the pass for to long once we took our pictures and drank some tea in the cabin we headed down the mountain and started warming up our body again. If there wasn't any freezing wind in Thorong la pass I believe the Decathlon jacket would have handled the cold temps fine. Overall it's a great down jacket for the price.

I own the Decathalon Trek in both down and synthetic. I took the down version on my AT thru hike and it worked great but I wish I would have had the synthetic one instead. In the Smokies we got hit with a bunch of snow and temps in the 20s. The best way to dry the sweat from your clothes when you stop at the end of the day is to keep them on and put dry layers on outside. I did notice a difference in the insulation properties of the down jacket as my undergarmets started to dry and the vapor passed through the jacket. A synthetic jacket would have solved this issue. They synthetic version is only a couple of ounces heavier and about half of the price. As far as warmth goes, it works as well as the down version. You'd be surprised how many people on the AT had Decathalon gear. It's definately more popular in certain circles.

My 4-season down jacket is the Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) Feather Pack hooded jacket. It’s not ultralight at about 15oz, but with 5oz of 800-fill hydrophobic goose down and costing under $200 it’s hard to beat. Temps in the 30s aren’t uncommon in the summer here and it’s perfect for staying warm before bed or after getting up. I’ve also hiked in it in subzero temps. @@radosawskrzypczak5977 it's very difficult to say, it depends on so many parameters such as when you're using it/for what activities, how you are dressed under... I've used it in summer above 2500m altitude in t-shirt, it's too warm, but I'm not a chilly person. I'd say it's good for mountaineering in mid season, in static position (when belaying or at camp) with a good layer underneath around -5 to 10°C. Above 10 I would find it too much.

I also have their down pants and those seem to be sized better. The only thing I don't love is there are no real pockets. I knew this going in. When I purchased the vest, I did not get their Plasma model, I got the Alpine Light model, it has pockets, and the outer fabric is a bit heavier duty. Have you ever tried La Sportiva apparel? I’ve used their jackets for years (well I worked for them for 4 years) and they are the boooomb… they are developed for skimountaineering. Light and very warm

The Decathlon version you are showing is (in Europe) about 60 euros. There is a 90 euros version that is even warmer. This one (MT100) is for -5C and the other one (MT500) is suitable up to -10C. Decathlon also has some pretty good merino wool base layers that are way cheaper than the brand versions. I have worked at Decathlon for a few months a long time ago, and we were explained that all of the gear is not just tested in a factory, but at the location where it will be used, in factory locations all over France. So the swimwear is made at the location that is near the beach, the ski clothing near the alps, etc.

I hiked the PCT with the Decathlon Trek 100. Great puffy. But, I couldn't get it out of my mind that I was a man wearing a women's jacket. The tag said men's, but the zipper was on the wrong side & the chest had a bit extra room. Otherwise, it was light & warm.... And it lasted through the long hike without any problems.

You didn't get a woman's jacket I have the same issue and what I found out is they are manufactured in France and that's the way they do it there. They're more of a European company but becoming popular in the United States. I got used to it real quickly and anybody who wants to say oh you're wearing a woman's jacket I'll say no it's a French jacket you idiot and mine cost $300 less than yours.

Keep in mind many winter jackets have a little extra room in the chest and slim down towards the waist to accommodate for scarves and vests. Many of my jackets except for an Oakley I have are cut somewhat roomier in the chest and it makes sense when you layer and add the scarf.

Great video!! Hey Dan, dont know if you have time reading all the comments, just wanted to say that i'be been following for long time and you have great reviews and new updates of the new gear coming outthere! keep the good work! I was wondering why no one from US or at least i haven't found any sort of video review on the brand called 'Nordisk' they have amazing stuff and particularly amazing ultralight down or synthetic jackets. Bunch of ultra runners use them and they rely their lives on their gear sometimes. Anyhow, if you have time to check out their Strato jacket or any new lightweight model, it would be amazing for entire community as quality of your videos is top notch! al the best, Djordje

I have the Decathlon Forclaz 100 & relegate its use to a mid layer garment out in the boonies & as an outer layer around the house or to go to the grocery store in a car & come back home on a cold morning. If I had it to do over again I would NOT buy it. It's only redeeming quality is the hood when used to cover my head along with an under-layer of Buff Headgear or a 100% wool Military watch cap. A merino wool sweater would be a better choice. Hold this jacket up toward a bright outdoor sky & you can see right through it. I'll likely give it away to the Salvation Army Thrift store.

I love my RAB Continuum. Bought used from BPL forum member. SOOOO comfy - I agree the helmet-sized hood is borderline comical (you knew that is why it's so big, right?😄). I use it for in-camp since it is way too warm for hiking where I am at.
