REVIEW: Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3

Just want to add a comment about the microphone location of the camera. As both a sound engineer and a music professional, its been considered wiser for a general use responsibility to have microphones on top with an omnidirectional pickup over unidirectional focal pickup because of tolerance for wind. Having a mic up top eliminates the problem of shooting "into the wind." It is better for general use ergonomics.

I haven't tried this, so I'm relating secondhand information, but my understanding is that the stock camera will take a non-manufacturer battery, but if you do a firmware update, the camera will then only work with a Panasonic battery (because the firmware update was specifically written to do that).

Thanks for the in depth review! I've been back and forth between this camera and the Sony Cybershot DSC-H20. I ride horses and get videos taken of me when I'm far off in the distance, hence the large zoom. However, I'm also into photography. When you talked about the focus not going to the side of the screen, now I'm back at the Sony. Do you have one you'd recommend? Thanks!

Note that DMC-ZS3 is what it's known as in the US, but shops in Europe sell it as DMC-TZ7.

I had the flash on as well. I'm not sure what the deal was - I have a VERY steady hand too. I ended up returning the L110 and getting a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3; I couldn't be happier with it. GREAT camera...and a little cheaper to boot! Thanks for replying, Jason ;-)

i've been suggested this camera under a $250 budget from about 3 out of 6 people. i was also maybe considering an inexpensive SLR camera. do you think that I should just go with this camera and later invest in a better SLR? do you have suggestions on any other better digital camera?

I have a question about the red camera....does the body look like colored metal or like a tough painted hard plastic? I have the silver and it feels and looks more metal, but my dad got the black and his looks less like hard plastic and has a different feel, but I know it's supposed to be the same....how does the red camera feel? I am thinking about exchanging mine for a red one because it's just such a nice color....but I don't want it to feel cheap or plastic-like. Any input would be helpful.

Thanks for answering so quickly. I kind of think the same as you about the black camera. It's hard, not cheap, but I don't think it's metal...the silver one I have feels like metal to me, but yours might be, too, just maybe the paint made it feel different or something. Your cam just looks so shiny, it's hard to tell. I would check it out in person if a store around here carried this awesome camera. I'd have to order it or exchange mine and take a chance. This camera is AWESOME if you like to record LIVE CONCERTS!!!! The audio stays nice and clear & is in stereo sound!! Camera is cheap to buy now since it's a few years older..I just bought another one since it was so cheap on eBay!!!Takes good pictures also!!

@ThoughtsMedia just wondering, i bought a refurbished ZS3 and its making the same noise as yours when it zooms... i watched peoples video with the TZ7 and it seems like theirs didn't have a zoom noise like the ZS3. that's what i notice.

In burst mode, how many consecutive shots will zs3 take before stopping? For sports shots. How fast can the camera take one picture after another when pushing the shutter manually? does it reset quickly?

good camera, and good reviews on it, but i here a major disadvantage is that it will only accept panasonic batteries( which are very expensive) panasonic somehow made it where it will only accept their own batteries ... maybe u can confirm this or not? what the difference between this camera and the DMC-ZS3K. great video by the way 5 stars

make sure is is ID-Secured. Otherwise it won't work with new purchases with updated firmware.

why is that when I record under the motion jpeg mode I'm only allowed to shoot 10 minutes with a 8gb sd card? I can shoot a lilttle over an hour with the avchd lite mode, but my pc doesn't read it...is there a program for this? thanks

hey thoughtsmedia, can you help me. i uploaded several videos from my ZS3 to youtube, and it looks like my video width and height dimensions arent correct because its surrounded by black filling gaps on youtube. can you tell me the correct width and height video i'm suppose to use for video editing? i have Adobe Premiere thanks!

Oh, and also, the lens always goes in and out when the power is turned on and off or I switch from shooting to playback mode. That wastes the battery, sort of.

It is geared specifically for the person who wants to take a digital picture by turning it on, and pressing a single button, and MAYBE zooming in or out. The camera is amazing for its price range, and ease of use. This is a great buy for anyone who is not a professional, who is not using a camera for professional zoom and manual focus. It is amazing - ABSOLUTELY AMAZING - for what you get for the price.

Its not as noisy as you think..I can't hardly hear it when recording...

One thing I don't like about the zoom on my Lumix (I don't know what version it is because I don't want to get it...) anyways, it goes directly from W to T on that zoom-scale thingy, and you can't adjust it to somewhere in between. (Or at least I don't think.) Also, in dark rooms, the videos have a lot of specks/noise, and it's hard to find decent lighting.

This is probably the WORST camera I've ever used, and I've used maybe a couple dozen. Outdoor shots with bright light are relatively good, but anything indoors/lower light you're looking at pictures with an excessive and unacceptable amount of noise/grain. Attempted every setting to no available to eliminate the horrid noise/grain. A camera from 2000 can take better photos!

i read many reviews 4 this camera, and since the price came down to $ 230 today i was going to buy it based on the reviews, but i have come across some big negatives for this camera... i;m use to taking a picture, then taking my sd card, and it loads in windows media player automatically and i can do what i what with my photos.... no so with this camera ,since windows does not recognize t avhd also not so good in low light- but that to me is not a big deal 5 stars from me

@ThoughtsMedia that video you saw is actually the original avchd lite file. In Adobe Premiere Elements, i made a video with the save as setting 720p 30. and its not coming out right. i also tried the 1080p as well. turns out the same. any idea? check this out, my edit video. watch?v=CMK00CSF4fM
