Russ your reviews are fricken awesome, after binge watching the videos, I just had to get my very first retro handheld. I ended up choosing the RGB 10 Max as the controls are top notch and the screen is big. It has a weird intermittent charging issue, but other than that, loving the device.
@mikeb.66032 жыл бұрын
Does anyone know how to remedy that? I have the intermittent charging issue myself. The first 2-3 charges seemed fine. I used the included USB to USB C cable plugged into an Apple USB A/C adapter from my old iPhone 6. I noticed in the last couple weeks, it wouldn't charge at all while the device was turned on. If powered off, it might go from 35% to maybe 42% on an overnight 10-12 hour charge. The first time that happened, I did a typical unplug and plug back in of everything. It then charged fully again so I just assumed it was a one-off case. The other day I tried countless times to charge it both while turned on and off and nothing was happening. At best, it would jump up 2-3% after hours and hours of charging. I even tried a new cable as suggested by the Aliexpress store. The new cable was basically doing the same thing. The only little trick I found out is to keep the device on, and don't shut the screen off. If you do that, it seems to charge. I got it to 100% last night in just a couple hours but had to leave the screen on. Once you click the power button to turn off the screen while charging, it seems to stop. Again, not sure if this is just another one-off thing but wondering if anyone else has the same experience. I love the device otherwise. I just can't rely on it to be available when I want to use it! Any advice is appreciated! Happy gaming!

Powkiddy build quality (plenty of reports of manufacturing faults, from joycon drift to the screen detaching), the screen brightness (or lack thereof) and lack of stereo was why I went with the RG351M. Even though I wish the RG351M had been given a resolution upgrade (and maybe a larger or 4:3 screen) like the RG350M, and had HDMI. It was a tossup with the RG351V, because of the screen, but I don't like the vertical layout, the lack of stereo and dual analogue controllers, and I really do like the metal casing of the M models. Your videos helped a lot with the decision and use (firmware etc).

I have doubts about RGB10max and RG351V. Community and OS support (like ArkOs) that the RG351V has are worth more than the larger screen and ergonomics of the RGB10max? The screen is bigger, but from the video, it looks like for 4:3 games the difference isn't that glaring. What do you think?

Pretty interesting to see this one have media previews in the UI, can't say I have seen that before in other devices but I may have missed other devices that have that feature, feel like it makes the whole package seem more together/legit if that makes sense. I'm starting to really want this one. I've got a RG351V and I've been mostly playing on my VIta lately (thanks for those videos to get me back into it, btw). I got my wife a Q90 this week and decided that I loved that form factor, so I've ordered one for me...and a V90 while I'm at it. I figure, worst case, I can give the ones I don't like away as gifts because most of these little devices would be a great gift for almost anyone I know. I feel like the Q90 is like to be my "throw it in the bag for a trip" device. But, I think an RGB10 could be my "play it at home" system. That said, I think I'm probably going to wait awhile and see if the price comes down some / what it looks like when some devices with more modern hardware start dropping.

Thanks for the review Russ, great job as usual. Coincidentally I purchased the first beer* of the month this evening and took you up on the offer to ease one gently into a pint glass while watching, this may have led to some loquaciousness on my part. So, I've decided to bullet point my thoughts ... as long sentences are proving a little tricky ... as is spelling ... nevertheless, lets get into it. 1. I like it even before it's powered up. The form factor, material and control choices all score high enough for me to just want one. 2. The screen. I want to take back what I previously posted about the chipset not having the power to do justice to the screen. It's a moot point, the screen and bezels are great. 3. The support prospects seem pretty good. Given how many great retro games this will already run it seems greedy to want more, but it's a nice cherry on the cake to think there may be. 4. Value. Ahh, yes ... well, err ... nearly ... but not quite. Which leads to ... 5. Would I buy one? As an RG351P owner, no. Sorry Powkiddy, I hope you do well with this and I would recommend it to others but not quite enough of an upgrade in my case. Which slam dunks into ... 6. I'd pay ... ooh ... lets say £40-50 if I could get a case and screen upgrade for my RG351P to replicate this. Hello ... Anbernic? ... are you reading this? Anyone ... ? Cheers, :) *Wychwood Brewery King Goblin

Ordered the RGB10 Max based on your review. While the screen is its biggest asset, the quality of the buttons feels cheap and flimsy that leaves the feeling of buyers remorse. When you talk about psp performance, you forget some games that are not puzzle or just 2d are really quite playable and enjoyable. I'll give you some examples: Daxter, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, NBA 08, Pro Evolution Soccer, Crush, and some 2D ones that are actually great games like Little Big Planet, Loco Roco or Patapon. Try them, you'll be surprised of how many nice psp games are actually playable, not only puzzle games.

The black one looks nicer imo. $120 is decent, about the same as O Droid Super. Screen brightness may be a big factor. Kinda like comparing a GBA SP AG001 for $35 with AG101 for $95+. I actually love when the games fill the screen, even if there's a slight difference in aspect ratio, the fact that it does all automatically is impressive, especially having the option to have original aspect ratio is fantastic as well. The only games it is weird for me are more modern games like Smash Bros, most of which which tend to be widescreen anyways. Definitely curious on Dreamcast tutorials. Great review.

You havent got the text next to them but who cares Im running Batocera OS and actually found I had to use the top two as start and select cause I found that when I was using the bottom ones it was also lowering and/or increasing the brightness. So yeah, Im using the top 2 as start and select and the bottom 2 are brightness keys. Cant reconfigure those in settings, I guess perhaps in a cfg file maybe, but I havent looked into that, dont need to really.

Yep, I have already changed the settings, but I wish they hadn’t engraved “start” and “select” near those bottom buttons!

Nice review! I would definitely purchase this device over the RG351P. It looks better and more comfortable to play. I returned the RG351P after 2 days because it was too small. I currently own the RG351V and will be keeping this device. It is awesome! This is worth an upgrade over the RG351P but not the RG351V. I will wait for the next gen chipset. They really need to start using snapdragon chipsets with touch screen and use Android already! Even if they used Android 7 it would blow lineage out of the water. Lineage is slow and buggy but still works for basic Android apps and gaming. I havent used lineage since installing it on my Raspberry Pi 3. It wasnt good.

Great review, Russ! If you feel like it, I think a comparison between the RGB10 Max and an Android phone + controller would be interesting. I nearly ordered an RGB10 Max, but decided not to because, to me, it landed in that middle child zone of being less go-anywhere friendly than the 3.5” consoles (e.g. RG351P), but also less capable than even a somewhat dated flagship phone (e.g. Samsung Galaxy S9+), so the RGB10 Max just didn’t seem to have enough of a niche of its own. (Concerns about that rubberized coating didn’t do the RGB10 Max any favors either.) That said, I recognize it’s not fair to compare the RGB10 Max to a significantly more expensive device, but a matchup against a phone at a comparable price point might be useful to those shopping options in that kind of budget. Just an idea. 😁

Great video, @Retro Game Corps. I haven't found any videos on loading games though?
