Love your unbiased reviews Paul. In answer to your query of flight numbers matching aircraft types, used to be that often QF767 from Brisbane to Perth direct (a 5+ hour slog which departs around 1930hrs) was operated by the old 767-300 buses before QF pensioned them off... flew on them a few times myself. Probably half of the time now (before the COVID impact!!) it's an A330-200 or A330-300. The other half of the time QF767 is operated by a 737-800. That' a tough slog in an 738 for 5+ hours at the end of the day - complete with the 2 hour time zone change from QLD to WA!
@swansbear4 жыл бұрын
The reason your flight was so dear is because nobody really flies to Canberra apart from diplomats etc, meaning flight prices are high. Also the new airport has an owner trying to get what they can from everyone. That means big fees that the general public end up having to pay for. You could easily have flown Sydney to Adelaide for less than half what you paid. Or chosen as option to go via Melbourne.

Paul, how far in advance did you book? I live in Australia and have not paid 400 one way in Qantas economy. Whilst QF tends to be pricier than VA and flying from CBR is not the cheapest, I think 400 is a misrepresentation of what Australians pay in a full service carrier. I have flown to SYD for 220 return in QF and live in Melbourne in the past few months. Just to be fair.

Canberra designed by Walter Burley Griffin...brilliant architect born in the USA...hence the lake in Canberra is named after him !! So sad re Virgin Australia with debts approaching 7 billion Australian dollars. They may return as a purely domestic airline and get rid of the small fleet of A 330 and B 777 aircraft....but who knows what will happen...not to mention my Platinum FF status and a lot of FF Points in the bank !! Although our population is around 26 million we need 2 airlines in such a vast island continent !! FYI re Adelaide...Adelaide is a planned city, designed by the first Surveyor-General of South Australia, Colonel William Light. 2 planned cities in one day !! Great video and flight Paul and hope you are safe and well during these awful times !!

$400 for a 90 minute flight? That's certainly not normal in Australia, yes its a little more expensive to fly here, but despite our 25 million population, we have 5 "main" Airlines that operate, including 2 LCC, 1 with a significant regional network, and 2 full service. To have paid $400 for that flight, it must have had something to do with the day, the time, or how close to flying it was booked. I know for a fact that MEL-SYD or SYD-ADL flights usually cost under $150AUD One Way, and these flights are of a similar duration and distance. Yes, VA is in Voluntary Admin, however it appears currently that they might survive thanks to a SQ or MU buy out. VA is owned by HNA Group, SQ and EY as well as smaller investors. Despite our small population, Australia has 3 of the top 50 busiest passenger air routes globally, with MEL-SYD being Number 3, carrying almost 10million pax per year.
@thwalesproductions4 жыл бұрын
$150 one way is still expensive. In Europe a flight with the same distance and flight time would usually cost under €50 one way
@Bryceyboy934 жыл бұрын
@@thwalesproductions Thats $85AUD one way, which is around what it costs to do that flight on a LCC. In Australia all Domestic flights with full service carriers offer food, full baggage allowance and a proper Business Class, as well as IFE too. Hence the higher prices. Get what you pay for.

Hi Paul, loved your take on us here in Oz ... but would you be offended if I pointed out that Melbourne, as we pronounce it, is more akin to "melben". I'd also point out that Canberra is one of the more expensive ports to fly in and out of, simply because the passenger numbers are comparatively low. Contrast that with a fare from Sydney to Adelaide, a greater distance, which would have been $219 one way. Although seeing the number of comments before me, someone else has probably already brought all this to your attention. We enjoy your reviews and hope that COVID-19 won't be with us much longer, so you're free to travel again.

That disclaimer in the in-flight magazine was the result of the behavior of many Chinese tourists onboard Qantas flights. I think it's also specifically printed in Chinese too. As well as notices around major airports in Australia and Canada - in Chinese only - with a warning not to spit on the floor or garbage cans. Yup, you read it right. They have had to put up notices like all over the airports, and only in Chinese (not in English).

I really love Canberra Airport. Very modern, architecturally interesting, spacious, and clean. And almost always deserted. Gotta love having a terminal - and as stunning as this - all to yourself. Melbourne or Sydney on the other end of the flight, seem pedestrian in comparison. Likewise, I love Wellington airport over the Tasman sea much better than the larger Auckland International. The runway views from the main concourse in Wellington are unbeatable.
@mark1236554 жыл бұрын
Great video as usual. Yes our Aussie airfares are expensive, part airport charges (which reflects monopoly privately owned airports) but I'd think $200-250 would be a normal advance fare on Qantas for this route. Qantas has 75 737s delivered from 2002-2014. They all got updated in the last few years with an extra row of seating, new fabrics and inflight internet. About half have seatback IFE and the majority of those are Sky Interior, so you got an older version that had the BYO IFE added. The seatback IFE ones are more common on the Perth, NZ and Asian flights, but otherwise luck of the draw. Agree Qantas's inflight internet is great being free and good speed. However it uses Australia's NBN service so only works over mainland Australia and not the water to NZ, Asia or even the flights over the Bite. Also 8 domestic focussed 332s have this internet None of QFs international aircraft have Internet, they are waiting on the new ViaSat3 launches

This is my take on flying, and yes I have worked in the airline industry for 20 years:- Sub 5 hour flight: - a seat, any seat, preferably an aisle. Leave me alone, buy on board if you want it, bring your own iPad / tablet / book for entertainment. 5 hour plus flight: - A seat that goes horizontal and I mean flat, not at some stupid 17.5 degree angle that most airlines consider a sleeper seat...... IFE bring your own .......and preferably a couple of Valiums! A cup of coffee and a muffin 1 hour out from the destination as a wake up. Prawn salads, eye fillet steak mains, desserts, cognacs and cheese-boards are just frivolous extras added by the airline at massive cost premiums. Eat that stuff at your destination - I’m sure you can go without it for 12 hours on a smelly aluminium tube. Hot tip :- Buy a couple of subways before you board.

Hi Paul, I always like your reviews as you always seem to be willing to show and explain the full range of variables from the, not so good through to excellent. There appears to be an underlying honesty in your approach. I appreciate that in a world where deception can often be a part of many things on the net. At last Qantas has become a part of your wonderful work. Not surprisingly, Qantas is my favourite airline. Although I travel on many others, none surpass Qantas on the most crucial aspect of flying, safety. I had hoped that you would finally make it here one day. You are right about Canberra and I am not anti our capital. The city is often underrated and this is a shame. No I don't live in Canberra but I have been there over 100 times, possibly a good deal more. My only minor criticism relates to your reference to "a small agricultural aircraft". This is in fact a water bombing aircraft and these aircraft and others similar are the backbone of aerial fire fighting resources in many parts of Australia. I look forward to many more of your reviews both airline and rail. So keep up the great work.

Re: what will happen there with VA There's a very good chance they'll survive. There's quite a number of potential bidders lining up. While the Queensland state government (where VAs HQ is) were willing to bail them out, the federal government weren't due to the complicated and foreign ownership structure. However it's known here in Australia that we need two major airlines operating. If Virgin goes down, QANTAS suffers. Some lay people have suggested 'we got through Ansett collapsing, we can get through Virgin going too' - we only got through Ansett collapsing because Virgin had only just commenced operations and was able to expand into the gaps left behind. We don't really have any alternative now.
@madebymawhinney4 жыл бұрын
You're right. VA is a bit of a dog, and it's ownership doesn't help that - but it's place in the industry is clear and it is needed. AU$400 Canberra to Adelaide O/W is ridiculous. With only Qantas left, what happens? Monopoly. Don't want to pay that much? Who are you gonna fly? Oh yeah, the other airline they own. Especially since their pivot and re-branding, as well as their acquisition of Tiger, VA has kept Qantas in check. Yes, jobs will likely be lost, and a scaling back of operations likely, but the Australian airline industry CAN NOT afford to lose VA. They'll come through battered and bruised, sure, but they're not the only airline being tested nowadays.

flying Qantas isn't all that expensive if you are able to book a few months in advance. Earlier this year before the covid 19 outbreak i booked a return trip from Brisbane to Cairns for the last weekend in August, a trip i make each year around my birthday to go see my dad for the weekend and it only cost me around $350 total. I know i could have got it cheaper with jet star or tiger but for me jet stars seats get really uncomfortable after about half an hour and well i would rather run down an airport runway flapping my arms to try and fly myselfe rather than fly tiger and if i cant get the Qantas flight i want then i go to Virgin Australia but overall prefer Qantas for there 2 carry on bags which is all i need to carry everythin i need for a weekend away because aint noboddy got time to wait at bagage claim when your only there for the weekend, oh and the free snack and drink, im kinda jealous you got a proper meal on this flight. Kinda sad its not looking likeley i will get to go this year but hey at least i might be able to claim some credit and book the trip for next year well in advance.
