You really have this one covered. It's the first time I've seen this machine, and I'm glad you're the person who introduced me to it. I have a V3 Silvia, on which I've installed a PID and this one is light years ahead of mine. I'm glad that you mention the meager drip tray, which has always been my pet peeve with the Silvia, and It's hard to understand why they didn't make it larger with this new model. My fix for this has been to use a 3" high rectangular Tupperware tray on top of the perforated metal one. Still, I need to frequently check the drip tray, since the V.3 won't tell me to do so. I wonder how much more this Pro model costs over the other Silvias. I'll go to the WLL site and find out. Open a shop in Brazil, and I'll be the first in line.

Excellent work here. This is how you sell a machine! The concept of covering an engine on a modern vehicle is the antithesis to this style of selling: being proud of what they've designed they've empowered their distributors to display it with this level of detail. One question: why the different materials for the boilers? Why not just straight stainless? thank you!
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 2 жыл бұрын
Hi ZM, Thanks for the kind comment. Stainless is becoming more common in espresso machines. When copper is used brass end plates are common as it's a more solid metal for attachment of plumbing fittings on the boiler. Marc

Don't waste money on the base model. Not having PID is the weak link of the base model. We enjoyed the original Silvia, bought in 2003, for twenty years. Bought the v6 last Fall, and have had mostly frustration with it. We had to relearn a new way to use the machine, and researched all tutorials available from WLL and others. It took over a month to start getting good espresso. After about 11 months, descaled with Durgol. Now, the boiler loses heat faster and our shots are about 16-17 seconds, using the same coffee, grind, process, etc. Surfing is the only way to get good results with this appliance.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 11 ай бұрын
Hey matt, Thanks for sharing your experience! Sounds like your grind size needs some adjustment if shots are coming in 16-17 seconds. Even with same coffee grind size is not set and forget. Grind size can change with new batch, as coffee ages, etc. Marc

@@Wholelattelovepage I'll give it a try. I'll clean the grinder today, and the reset the grinding burrs. I just spent some time checking the Rancilio Rocky grinder starting with the setting at "10" and worked my way down to "6" and I'm getting consistent shots in the 16-17 second range. I have tried with variations on how tight the portafilter is, and with no specific pattern, I sometimes end up with a wet puck. Making one change at a time is not showing any change. Another thing is that we always have some grinds in water, when drawing water out to warm up cups. I have had thoughts of getting a new gasket, but after 10-11 months, that shouldn't be necessary. I am using the double shot basket that came with the Silvia and I get about 14-15grams of coffee in there. I always have an indentation of the screw that holds the filter in place. I have seen some other videos mentioning how that can cause cracks in the puck. I have yet to get a really good pull off this machine and espresso beans are too expensive to get one good cup out of every 8 cups that go down the sink.

Hi, finally got my Silvia Pro, this is a beautiful video. I’m looking for a descaling process for that machine, it seems very difficult to do. Can you please explain how you do it ? Thanks
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 7 ай бұрын
Hi d, Manufacturers of machines using heat-exchange boilers or dual boilers like the Silvia Pro recommend end user do not descale the machines. A couple of reasons... First, very involved and potentially problematic to completely fill the steam boiler with descaling solution. In normal use the boiler only fills partially to eave headroom for steam. Second, as the machines have relatively complex internal hydraulics, chuncks of scale can dislodge during descaing and plug up other areas of the machine. But it's easy to avoid scale in the first place. The Silvia Pro X ships with a BWT Bestsave in reservoir pad filter. Use that as directed and no scale should form in the machine. The filter exchanges calcium in source water for magnesium which will not cause scale. Here's the filter: www.wholelattelove.com/products/bwt-bestsave-m-anti-scale-filter Marc

Hi RMQ, I would try removing the water in the sensor line. Believe it works by sensing change in air pressure within the line. If full of water that probably will not work properly.

@@Wholelattelovepage thank you so much for your quick reply and all that you do. In the meantime I have done the opposite of what you recommend and got all the air out of line and sensor flcking the line with my fingers to get the bubbles out. Now it works after some calibration of the two set screws on the sensor. I can imagine your method works too. Didn’t find any documentation on how to calibrate the system. Also: the silicone tube gets hard and brittle in the water reservoir. My problem manifested after descaling the machine, so I believe that the calcium deposits kept it tight and when they dissolved it sprung a leak. Cutting off 1 cm from the end of the tube gave it a fresh start for the next two years.

Hi and thanks for the video. Do you happen to have a tutorial on how to descale this machine or the Silvia Pro X? Haven't found anything yet. Thank you!
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage Жыл бұрын
Hi John, You are welcome. I do not have a descale video specific to either of those Rancilio machines. Part of the reason is manufacturers advise against descaling dual boiler machines. Why? Well, it's difficult to fully descale the service (steam) boiler as it does not fully fill with water when operated normally. Also, severely scaled dual boiler machines can have scale chunks break off, not fully dissolve and plug other parts of the machine. The best thing to do is properly treat water so no scale happens in the first place. The BWT Bestsave pad filters when used as directed prevent scale in the machine. Marc

I just finished your Bezzera BZ13 DE Espresso Machine review, and for only a little more it looks like it would be a far superior machine to the Silvia Pro in both build quality and features. Am I missing anything?
@Casablancas.
@Casablancas. 3 жыл бұрын
BZ13 is a Heat exchanger. Silvia Pro is a dual Boiler. Dual boiler machines will have more consistent brewing temperature as you wont need to flush and approximate the brew temp like on a HX machine.
@Smellslikegelfling
@Smellslikegelfling 3 жыл бұрын
@@Casablancas. BZ13 has a pid, so being a heat exchanger is irrelevant. WLL already did a review that shows the temp is dead stable without the need to flush due to the group being electronically heated. For $120 less BZ13 PM a steal compared to the Sylvia, which honestly shouldn't cost more than $1400 compared to the original Sylvia.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Nathaniel @Casblancas and @SkeksisRule have good points. Flushing is generally not required on the BZ13 and brew temps are accurate in my testing. IMO no issue with Silvia build quality. Just wish the drip tray was a bit larger. BZ13 is a little prettier IMO. Tough call as to which to choose. You'll have more control of steam pressure on the Silvia plus the ability to just turn the steam boiler off if only doing espresso. Marc
@Casablancas.
@Casablancas. 3 жыл бұрын
@@Wholelattelovepage @SkeksisRule I did some research when deciding to purchase a HX or Db machine, and did look at the bezzera BZ group. I would think the typical limitations of HX machines will apply, notably temperature fluctuations, generally getting hotter over multiple shots. This is because to maintain steam pressure, the boiler temperature may overshoot when cooler water is drawn into the HX for subsequent brews. Do mind that this is just speculation, i do not have experience with this machine. But i would think a DB machine with separate service and brew boiler can maintain consistent temperature longer, for more shots, i.e. more than 5 shots back to back. For 1-2 shots, i think either kind of machines will work well. Perhaps Marc could confirm or reject this hypothesis?
@nathanielpetruska1305
@nathanielpetruska1305 3 жыл бұрын
And to make this choice even harder, for the same price Lelit Elizabeth looks similar to the Silvia Pro/BZ13 except for the one being a HX. Trying to figure out if the shot/steaming is superior in one of these models.

I've had a Silvia for at least 12 years, I installed a PID myself a few years back. Mark: was hoping you'd point out how well laid out all the components are, but then most Italian machines are. My question: I have a triple shot basket with a naked portafilter and I always wondered if I can use it for double and single shots as well? I would like to use the naked portafilter more often but only the triple basket seems to fit it well, so for smaller shots I use the regular Rancilio portafilter. Great job as always Mark.

You mentioned in a reply to another question that this machine does not do preinfusion. Does a machine that offers preinfusion make noticeably better tasting espresso?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hi LNW, Thanks for the question. Yes, potentially. Pre-infusion can do a number of things. For instance extended long low flow/pressure pre-infusions can help reduce the brightness/acidity of relatively fresh from roast beans. Low flow/pressure allows them to off-gas CO2 before full pressure extraction reducing brightness. Short pre-infusions and pre-wetting may help reduce channeling of brew water by causing ground coffee to swell prior to full pressure brewing. The result is a more even extraction. On the other hand pre-infusion can be detrimental to some coffee types. For instance I prefer hitting darker roasts and older coffees with high pressure/flow ASAP at start of extraction. Marc

Hi JS, Thanks for the comment. As mentioned I'm not a fan of the smallish drip tray! Flow control not for everyone but yes, gotta have an E61 group for that. As far as heat up times the Silvia Pro is IMO at least 2x as fast as typical E61 machine. Most of those are 25-35 minutes for full temp stability. With boiler over group design and just .3L volume Silvia pro is ready to go in 10-15 max. I'll disagree with @superflyregularguy on PID HX opinion. I've tested a lot of those and Profitec, ECM and Rocket machines are very accurate brew temp wise and generally do not need cooling flush like pressurestat controlled HX machines. Marc

How can you descale this machine?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 25 күн бұрын
Hi E, Thanks for the question. Manufacturers of dual boiler machines like the Silvia Pro advise end users not to descale them. Since the steam boiler has headspace in the boiler for steam, it requires technician level knowledge/skill to fill it fully with descaling solution and then rinse it out. For machines with heat exchange or dual boilers it's best practice to filter water properly to prevent scale from forming in the first place. Currently shipping Silvia Pros come with a BWT Bestsave in-reservoir filter which exchanges calcium in tap water with magnesium to prevent scale formation: www.wholelattelove.com/products/bwt-bestsave-s-anti-scale-filter?variant=14409382723643

The question that I have is : when device is in use and water/steam boiler has reached its temperature, the thin pipe coming out from the boiler and leading to hot water is completely cold; the other pipe leading to steam is hot. Could the blockage be in the boiler , right where the pipe for hot water starts ? Otherwise why would that pipe remain completely cold ?

Great review. Unclear about the material used in the frame. My now defunct Silvia V3 was operating superbly for over a decade, but the frame is extremely rusty, since it was made of mild steel, painted black. Seemed to me like a bad choice to have mild steel at the bottom of a machine that will inevitably have water migrating down onto it. Is the Silvia Pro frame made of stainless steel? Hard to tell since it is painted black.

Hi Jim, Thanks for the comment. From time to time I have heard of frame rusting on older Silvias with steel frames - especially those near salt water/ocean. I've found no specs for frame material of the Silvia Pro but have heard it is a type of stainless. There are different grades of stainless steel. Some magnetic and some not so much. The Silvia Pro's frame is magnetic so if stainless I believe it's a grade which contains more iron. What that means for corrosion long-term I'm not quite sure. Perhaps less likely to oxidize but not immune? Marc

Looks like a great machine. However, I think they skimped a bit on the display. A graphical, or even just a full alphanumeric display is only a few dollars and would have avoided a a menu system that needs a cheat sheet to use.

Hi David, Thanks for the comment. Displays can be very polarizing. Some want more, some less. Take Rocket machines for instance... As a company part of their philosophy was no visible digital displays on machines so they hid PID controllers behind drip trays or used removable screens on some machines. Others go color touch-screen like Bezzera on their Matrix and Duo machines. IMO the display/controller on the Silvia Pro is very easy with just 3 input buttons. With 8 items controllable one will know them well after a couple of days use. 99% of time your not likely to go beyond the first 3 items which are steam boiler temp, backflush and auto wake-up.

One thing I didn't like about my Rocket Machine is the drip tray is also kinda tiny when they definitely could have made it larger. I used to have a QuickMill Silvano and the drip tray on that was huge in comparison. I wonder if the steam, wand would be better off with a 2 hole tip (usually easy to swap on most machines), more power that way, unless there's benefits to having more holes.
@Jaroslav.
@Jaroslav. 3 жыл бұрын
Do you think the drip tray would really be an issue? As this being a dual boiler, you wouldn’t need to be flushing as much as with a heat exchanger or the classic Silvia. Just asking because i’ve read some owners report having to empty the tray after 4-5 days while making a few drinks a day. I empty the tray on my Silvia V6 (which is about half full) every evening.

Hi Ben, Thanks for sharing! Steam tips are easy to switch out. The 4 hole tip on the Silvia Pro gives an excellent vigorous roll to milk. But, tip type is personal preference. Working tips with more or less holes and different hole diameters produce different results. For instance you could have a single hole tip with larger diameter hole up against 4 hole tip with smaller diameter holes. Both tips might put out the same total power but frothing technique would likely be a bit different. Marc

@@Wholelattelovepage Cool, I went from A QuickMill Silvano machine with a single tip wand a not so powerful thermoblock for steaming (you actually have to temperature / pressure surf with the machine which people say you don't need to do with thermoblocks, but I found you DO for best results) and then when I went to a Rocket 1.8L Heat exchange machine with 2 holes I had to re-learn how to steam milk since it was just so fast and powerful, not sure how much it had to do with the power of the steam or the tips though. Definitely took some time to adjust and I'm still getting the hang of it.

Should the single shot basket extraction time be the same as the double? For example, if I get a good double shot between 25-30 seconds from first drop, the single should be about the same time? Some claim it should be cut by half (12-15 seconds), but I’m skeptical. Any ideas?
@oracla
@oracla 3 жыл бұрын
I think this tends to be a little different for every machine and user. I would only worry to get a similar yield (brew ratio) and flow as in the double shot and further adjust with tasting. It takes some experimenting.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hi EA, Thanks for the question. So I very rarely do singles but general rule of thumb is extraction timing should be the same for single as double. Keep in mind the the flow rate through a single basket is much lower than a double basket. But not all single double basket combos are setup perfectly. I have used Baristapro single - double baskets which are engineered to use the same grind size and produce about the same timing. As @oracla wisely mentions it make take some experimenting/tasting. Taste is more important than time. Marc

Very well-put answers. Thank you @oracla and Marc. I agree that it needs a lot of experimenting & I’m glad I could eventually manage to make consistent good single shots, without needing to change the grind size between the double and single (very slight adjustment in time, though) but I needed to ask the question because whom I’m arguing with regarding the single/double baskets are stubborn lol. And so I needed an outside source. Thanks again @oracla and Marc!

Hi Leroy, Thanks for the question. I can suggest all day but need to know more about how you will use the machine and budget. If doing straight espresso, Americanos and very occasional milk drinks you could go with a Gaggia Classic Pro: www.wholelattelove.com/collections/gaggia-classic-pro-colors It's the best value in premium entry-level single boiler machines. If doing mostly milk drinks I recommend a machine with a heat-exchange boiler. With those you can brew and steam milk simultaneously. The Rocket Espresso Appartamento is entry-level in that category: www.wholelattelove.com/collections/rocket-espresso-appartamento-with-new-color-panels For the same price You can pick up the dual boiler Silvia Pro featured in this video. DBs can brew and steam at the same time as well and are consider a step up from HX machines. Much better temperature accuracy than the Appartamento as it has PID control of both boilers. Non PID HX boiler machines like the Appartamento will require cooling flush prior to pulling a shot. Hope that helps! If you'd like to provide more details on how you'd use a machine like drink types, frequency of use, what grinder you are (or will use) and your anticipated budget I'd be happy to provide more specifically matched machine options. Hi LB, Thanks for the question and apologies for a delayed response - I've been off-line for a week. The Silvia Pro has a better feature set than the Appartamento as a dual boiler machine w/PID. The Appartamento is not PID so generally needs a cooling flush prior to an extraction. If you like the simplistic design of the Silvia then go for it! Marc

Marc - My 4-5 month old Sylvia Pro is getting very low water flow when I brew (and just brewing - the steam and hot water seem to be working just fine). After cleaning the shower screen and the shower screen holding plate, and running the backflush cleaning program (C01) several times, the problem persists. I was told by WLL's service dept. that the three-way solenoid may be clogged and that it's user serviceable. That's the one accessed from the front, correct? It is removable? If so, how? The location and connection seem different from the Gaggia (where I have watched your You Tube about cleaning the solenoid). It's not as obvious to me how I remove it from the boiler it is connected to, and how to take apart the solenoid myself. Is this something I can realistically do myself? Hi Marc, excellent detailed review as always. I'm about to upgrade from my aging E61 HX machine and this one is on my shortlist. My question is, is this enough of an upgrade? At a few hundred NZD more I can get the ECM Technika V with rotary pump, or for a few hundred $ more again I can possibly get the all-singing, all-dancing Profitec pro 700. The more expensive machines look beautiful, and should last me a lifetime, but the jump in price compared to the Silvia Pro could buy a whole lot of coffee! Do you have any thoughts on this conundrum?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Andrew, Decisions right? IMO the Pro 700 is at another level in capabilities (and price of course) compared to the Silvia Pro. Depends on how far you go with espresso but flow control of the E61 group opens up a whole new world of extraction possibilities. There was a point in life (paying for 3 kids in college) when I had no choice but to look at value. As I'm past most of that now and the associated sacrifices I tend to go for quality and what makes me happy - ya, I'm old enough the Pro 700 will probably outlive me ;) If it's something I'm using daily and for a very long time I'm willing to pay more to get there. My rational self amortizes the cost difference over the term. If difference in daily cost makes sense I can justify the expense and look back down the road and be happy with the decision and have no regrets. But, that's just me. Marc

You sure the OPV vents cool water?
@oracla
@oracla 3 жыл бұрын
From what can bee seen, there is no other way? The OPV is connected directly to the water pump and thus cool water. After the OPV, water goes into the boiler.

Hi R, Very sure! OPV is inline prior to the boiler. Marc

I wish people would review the noise level!!! The pump for the steam boiler is super loud and vibrates the whole machine to the extent you can’t have cups on top rattling to bits 🤦‍♂️ Its literally that loud it wakes up the entire house. I should have stuck with just my 15 year old Silvia which was awesome. Why release a machine like this with such a massive issue/fault
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Aaron, Thanks for sharing your experience. Extra noise/vibration can often be traced to the pump knocking on a nearby component in the machine. Often an easy fix to adjust position of the offending component which reduces vibration.

"New" this year and already scheduled to be discontinued. Rancilio just announced the "Pro X". With it they've added a pressure gauge on the front panel and (something they apparently forgot to do with the Pro) pre-infusion. Too bad for all of those people who bought the Pro. I've seen suggestions for a user "upgrade kit" for the Pro, but that's not going to happen, since it would require finding a place for a pressure gauge and the user would have to be able to deal with opening up the innards and changing internal wiring - with the possible shock hazards involved. If the people at Rancilio were truly concerned about their customers they would offer to upgrade the Pro model (perhaps for a $200 fee, which is the cost difference between the two). Their immediate problem is what to do with all of those in-stock Pro models. Who would buy one now when for slightly more you can buy a Pro X?

@@maxfactor4209 And that’s absolutely correct. They politely confirmed this to me as well and i fully trust their statement. I’ve had my Silvia V6 since June 2020. I’ve somehow managed to scratch the surface under and around the drip tray already and i’ve never had any rust issues. There’s water leaking under the drip tray constantly and i’ve never seen any rust anywhere.

Hey max, I’m 12 years in happily pulling shots from my pasquini Livia 90. It is stainless and has a painted steel frame and not a speck of rust. Great machine BTW. This may be due the quality of the coating and possibly because the drip tray is plastic with a SS grate so there’s no abrasion against the frame when emptying. I wouldn’t let the steel frame be a deal breaker.

Go to espresso bar two-three times a day and learn how fast it gets expensive) Coffee isn't cheap habit. Even drinking instant is expensive if you research price of powder for one cup.

Hi cristi, @Event 42 makes a good point on cost relative to coffee shop. Single boiler Silvia retails for ~$735. There are aftermarket PID upgrade kits available for that but by the time you're done installing price is near $1,000. And on that PIDd single boiler you're still waiting for steam and brew temps (even with the PID) are nowhere near as accurate as those on a PID machine with dedicated brew boiler. Then there's additional functionality on the DB like shot timer, dual pumps, automated backflush, boiler draining, etc. Compared to toher DB machines the Silvia Pro has a much lower price point. Marc
