I find it understated, which is better than overstated or odd looking. However, it presents a very industrial look that isn't aesthetically appealing to me. It was designed as if it were just going to sit in the back of a kitchen of a restaurant, so it needed to look sturdy, but not elegant or beautiful in any way. It's the only somewhat downside to me of this machine. I'd rather it look more elegant in my home kitchen.

Not all coffee machines need to come with a no fingers policy. The lack of chrome is a bonus in my opinion. The design is classic and you don’t mess with that if you want to keep your audience.

One thing worth mentioning is that a full pressure flush/purge is required for soft infusion to work properly before inserting the portafilter as the group head needs to be fully saturated. Otherwise water will just drizzle from the center onto the puck which can lead to heavy channeling. I almost gave up on soft infusion until I accidentally found out about that but I still find it a bit stressful as the gap between flushing and starting soft-infusion shouldn’t take longer than maybe 3 seconds, otherwise the saturation is gone and drizzling happens again…
@Dougdimmadome899
@Dougdimmadome899 2 жыл бұрын
Rancilio’s ‘soft infusion’ is somewhat different from traditional pre-infusion. The intended goal for those few seconds is not necessarily to fully saturate the grounds, but rather to partially empty the coffee boiler so that when the pump engages it takes longer to fill the boiler and reach full pressure, aka a soft pressure ramp. The longer the soft infusion the longer the pressure ramp. To take full advantage of this feature, the group should be purged for about 3 seconds prior to pulling a shot. Hold down the brew switch until it reads ‘F’ (stands for flush), then start your shot cycle. When compared to shots with no soft infusion, I did find that the soft infusion mitigated the channeling issues I observed in the full pressure shots. Overall, I think it’s a useful feature.

I’ve owned a Pro X since December 2021, an upgrade from Gaggia Classic. I think Spro is right on target here. It’s a fantastic machine and I love it. I have nothing bad to say about it. The drip tray doesn’t bother me. The minimalistic design suits our kitchen aesthetic, so it is a win for me, ticking all the right boxes, especially in terms of functionality and reliability. Highly recommend this. Great review Spro, I was so excited when you reviewed my machine.

@@ccuellar6212 true! I haven’t had a mess yet and it has been around 9 months. I’m sure you can get an aftermarket float indicator for cheap, but I didn’t even bother. I purchased the Pro just as the Pro X was released and got a great clearance deal. Yes, the look isn't the best, but I only care about workflow and results, and I think the Pro 100% delivers, especially for the price. Not sure how many other dual's can do what it does for that price-point. I wasn't too concerned with paying almost $1,000 more for the X just to get pre-infusion (the pressure gage is nice to look it, but ultimately doesn't really do anything). I've heard these machines are pure workhorses, and will last forever if properly maintained. Love it.

We upgraded to one of these machines when our Breville/Sage Barista Express gave up on us. We also got a Niche Zero, so quite a change. But it was worth it with much better coffee and much, much more consistency. We love both the new machines. Yes the drip tray design is not perfect but it's just part of the routine to empty it, just like topping up with fresh water. I like the design but am a "substance over style" kind of chap. I'm surprised you didn't mention that the pump runs at 9bar straight out of the box, unlike most similarly priced machines. Being in the UK meant that it was shipped direct from Italy, which was pretty straightforward. So in case you haven't worked it out, it's a big thumbs up from me!

I have had one of the early early models for almost 20 years. No frills. Single boiler. Looks almost the same as the most current model, so they obviously haven't changed the manufacturing process for most of the machine. I added a third party PID years ago. It's never let me down. I wouldn't use it to entertain guests who all order cappuccinos and lattes - single boiler sucks big time for that - but for a couple of espressos or coffee drinks daily, it's gold. And it was priced way lower than what you have to pay today for a much more advanced machine, of course. I love my Silvia.

I just got the Silvia today. Was looking for the most basic machine to mod. By modding the Silvia you can get preinfusion, pressure profiling, and also build a built-in scale. With the mods, this machine would be far better than machines that cost 3 times more. Bear in mind that due to small boiler, it makes an excellent machine for brewing 2 cups at a time.

I’m very happy with the Silvia pro x, been using for 6 months, solid workflow and easy use. I didn’t enjoy setting the “wake up in x hours” so added a smart plug to power up before I wake up and it’s ready to use everyday. The back flush process with the cap is a bit odd and I think I’ll buy a blank basket for easier maintenance process. I prefer the clean look and design over other machines with more ornamental and unnecessary designs. I’ve seen a lot of reviews complaining about the drip try, and while I agree the lift out isn’t the best, I haven’t found it an issue as it doesn’t require frequent emptying unless you’re flushing the group head into the tray frequently, even regular maintenance doesn’t fill it much so this just isn’t a problem during normal use.

I have had Rancilio Silvias for about 20 years - they have consistently made good espresso, but the main drawback has been how slow it takes for the boiler to warm up and having to wait. I have given one to our son, and have a backup waiting in the wings in case anything goes bad that I cannot fix. The Pro X looks like it might be a very good investment (hint for my wife) this Christmas.

Great review, but it wouldn't be a Silvia if they changed the design. I love that it carries its heritage with pride. The only problem is that they're so reliable that you only ever need to buy one. I've got a 2016 5e, and it is still perfect. Would be nice if they sold upgrade kits.
@chpdx
@chpdx 2 жыл бұрын
I generally agree. However, I would love to see a new design from them. Perhaps I would have chosen to keep the Rancilio Silvias as they currently are and dop the price while making these iterations (the Pro and Pro X) with a new form factor. A redesigned drip tray, water tank, and a pressure gauge viewable by someone over 5' tall would be very welcome changes in a new chassis.

My Rancilio Silvia from 2013 had a boiler made of a low yield lead alloy, raising questions of its impact on taste but also bringing up health concerns, so great to see they switched to brass. I didn’t see this in the video but I believe the machine also offers a direct plumbing connection? The pressure of the of the direct connection could lead to some changes needed at a PID level. Also, would be great to have seen more on the build quality. Though put together with a solid steel frame, the brew-head housing was previously wrapped in a faux polished steel plastic that peeled over time. One last note, Silvias are notoriously loud and a comparison with similar machines could have been an important piece of information for those considering the purchase.

I don't know if Rancilio found a way around it, but as far as I know in order to do a direct plumb, you need a rotary pump. This has vibration pumps.

I've owned the pro (not x) for about a year now and it is an incredible machine and an even better value. I think the soft infusion would be interesting to play with but not worth the jump for me. I have heard the gripe about the drip tray several times before and I really don't understand it. This isn't a HX machine. You're not blasting copious amounts of water in to your drip tray to do a cooling flush. I make about two drinks a day and quite honestly, the water in the drip tray is usually evaporated by the next day!

Coming from a guy with a modded Silvia ver1 for 10 years. Its a tank... all parts available online and has been a solid performer - but "temp surfing" a single boiler sucks. I can still make an amazing latte. I can say I like the basic design because its narrower, fits my counter and the wife doesn't get on my case for spending the money on what could look like a fancy machine. The PID menus are normal for someone used to the standard Auger PID on most of those. You don't get in those menus too often once set. You make your kick ass pro-sumer latte and go to work. I'm about to buy one of these PRO x for the dual boiler alone, and I don't want to drop $5k on a linea mini...thank you for the review thumbs up.

I've had my Rancilio Silvia since 2018. She makes 2 cups a day sometimes more. Thought about upgrading to the double boiler Pro X, but the single boiler is more than capable of producing great coffees. Maintenance is minimal and I've had no issues with her so far. A fantastic and dependable machine. I paid around $700 +/- back then and while id like a Pro X, I can't see a better cup made for the cost of a Pro X. In the mean time. My old single boiler continues to make coffee house quality at home for pennies per serving... Silvia and Rocky also travel with me on road trips. One other thing. The drip tray has never been an issue for me an works just fine...just empty it when done. The fact that you tip it up to remove is also a non issue. Nothing will spill out.

I’ve owned a Silvia (v2) since 2010. Never missed a beat. These things are built to last, and those switches are still crisp today. Only had a tiny bit of flaking on some aesthetic tin-like finishing around the porta filter shroud. A good grinder is an absolute must, and without a PID (can be modded on an old one or included as is here) you have to become pretty good at surfing that boiler temperature by feel. But overall this version looks like it solves most of the issues in terms of workflow with previous generations. Now the only question left, is this iteration still built to the same standard and will last for 12+ years?

New steam valve, overhauled (leaky) boiler gasket, and just recently a new pump. I'm about to get the Auber pre-infusion PID kit for it, as temp surfing is tedious. I just bought a new Silvia M, to replace our 19 year old Silvia (first gen). I was looking at the Pro X, but just couldn't swing the extra $1k for dual boiler, PID, and other bells and whistles. But after getting a new Silvia M, I wonder ... It might be nice for you to address the difference between the two machines, to help someone like me (in the future) to decide which way to go and if the Pro X is worth the extra wheelbarrow of coins. My gripe with the new Silvia M, is that in four days, I have thrown away about 12 pulls, and drank two. I'm using the same Rocky grinder, same Cafe Umbria Gusto Crema beans, and the coffee is not worth drinking. I have adjusted my grinder with increments down to "6" on my grinder. After 19 years of enjoying my setup, I find it difficult to understand how everything I was doing, immediately went south with the new Silvia M. Even with everything else dialed in and tested (one change at a time), I'm getting shots pulled at an average of 14 seconds before the light comes on. My wife has accidentally, had two experiences where the pull was in spec, closer to 30 seconds. I contacted Whole Latte Love days ago about this and haven't heard back. So I'm not pleased there. I bought my previous machine from them as well. Anyway, not to be a complainer, my point is simply that beginners should steer clear of this machine unless it offers easier control over the M model. Otherwise, there is the potential for hating the machine. If the Pro X solves the issues I'm having, I would have to seriously consider if I'd pay the extra money.

I've had mine for about 2 years now and its worked flawlessly without any issues No Error Codes or Overheating Issues. I'm making great drinks in less than 15 minutes. The only annoyance is when you empty the brew and steam boiler and store it for a month the plastic pipes got moldy this happened to me in the peak of summer when temperature outside was around 95 - 100F. It was hard to clean it out thoroughly so I purchased new pipes online for like 6$ and it took me about 30 minutes to replace both pipes that are in the water reservoir. Other than that the machine is solid. I've made 2-3 drinks for me and my wife everyday for 2 years and also occasionally drinks for 2-4 guests and it has worked flawlessly. Dual Boiler, Dual PID and Dual Vibratory Pump works without any issues. I wish the steam wand was burn proof and the drip tray design is kinda odd but other than that a solid machine. Feels like it will last a decade or more if you maintain it regularly with back flushing and good water. Hope this helps.

I have a suspicion the PRE-INFUSION settings being hidden in the last menu item is just a way for Rancillio to save on some extra work and testing - it's an -addition- to the menu that was otherwise functional and programmed and proven. If they'd added it in a different order, re-ordering the options -COULD- always cause bugs in the future that weren't present in the 'non-X' version.

Thank for the analysis. I did considered the Sylvia ProX when I recently decided to upgrade, but I am glad I opted instead for the Bellezza Bellona for basically the same features (1600$ Canadian). Love the stainless steel dual boilers the PID, the somewhat pre-infusion, the glass water container instead of plastic, etc. A review of yours would be very interesting. ☕👍

Did you look into the Lelit Elizabeth? At a glance it seems to have the same core features (dual boiler with PIDs, preinfusion, pressure gauge), with a more polished look and possibly better ergonomics (although there is a single pump in the Lelit, and I wonder what this changes). It seems priced close to the Silvia Pro X in the US, but here in France it is significantly cheaper (around 1500€ for the Prox X vs. 1100€ for the Elizabeth).
@chongli297
@chongli297 2 жыл бұрын
The Elizabeth also has a stainless steel service boiler capable of delivering up to 4 bar of steam pressure, something you won't find on machines until you go far more expensive than that. The Elizabeth even has a feature where the steam pressure can be used to pressurize the brew water (a solenoid valve controls this), giving you full variable preinfusion. It's really an incredible machine.

It is no surprise to see other brands adding touch screens to the flagship modals, and that is just something that Silvia will likely never do. Functionality and control are all awesome, but if you need to reference a spreadsheet to access those functions it can be daunting and even kick the customer over to the other competition. If anything, this brand could use a refresh on the externals and drip tray design as it is simply the worst in this price category.

Great video. Thank you for that review! I am currently an owner of a Silvia V6 and has been for two years. Sort of my “work from home Covid” purchase. I find it to be great but I am lacking a bit more features and two boilers. Thus, the upgrade might be the Pro x. I love the Italian brutal design of the Silvia (and rocky grinder). I am just curious - when you switch it on, it heats the boiler for the espresso. But do you also need to turn on/heat the boiler for the water pump at the same time? So to clicks to turn both on? Just so that you are able to brew and steam right after each other. Thanks again :)

I think aesthetics is one of the main reasons people still buy E61 machines over something like this. From a capability point of view this probably crushes most E61 machines but an expensive machine is also often part of your home interior design. So a lot of people choose looks over function.
@nicbrownable
@nicbrownable 2 жыл бұрын
It is a price point constructed dual boiler machine. It is good for the money, but it is cheaper than E61 dual boilers for a reason. Smaller, thinner boilers. Silicone tubing throughout. Low volume vibratory pumps. And it is missing a colossal amount of brew head mass. It is a 5-8 year lifespan machine rather than a 15 year machine. It doesn’t lack capability if you are on a personal coffee journey. But you are comparing a RAV4 to a Landcruiser. Having said that, the dirty secret is that most people don’t actually use the capabilities of a Landcruiser, and a more modest car would do them fine.
@TheDusty0ne
@TheDusty0ne 2 жыл бұрын
@@nicbrownable well I guess that really depends on the E61 machine. For some that's surely the case. For other cheaper ones I'm not so sure. Also by far not all of them are thermaly stable. The need for cooling flush etc. doesn't make them appealing either from a workflow perspective (talking mostly about HX here but there are a lot of HX E61 in that price range out there). In terms of longevity I don't think this will last shorter than a normal E61 machine.
@nicbrownable
@nicbrownable 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheDusty0ne The Silvia Pro X is a machine with the features of a machine 30% more expensive with the build quality of a machine 30% cheaper. Don’t delude yourself. There are compromises. The inside is a mess of tubing, the electronics are directly under the boiler, and the 3 way valve/vacuum breaker runs liquid down the back of the front plate. It is built like a prototype machine. It is priced the same as high end E61 HX machines from Profitec, Bezzera and Crem One. For a couple of hundred more you can get into rotary pump HX. These are machines with true commercial pedigree that can be repaired with off the shelf parts from multiple manufacturers far in the future.

Could I get some recommendations for which machine to purchase? Got a niche zero but using a Sage duo temp for 5 years. Budget is around £1000-1500. Have been looking at Rancillio Silva pro x, Profitec 400 (maybe with added flow control) or 500 and Sage/Breville dual boiler. I make 1-2 cups in the morning and make milky drinks in the evening. Would appreciate some recommendations/overall best pic!

I’m seriously considering purchasing one of these machines. One question- does the soft infusion feature work with the steam boiler switched off? I won’t be using steam very frequently since I tend to drink straight espresso and find the energy savings appealing from just heating the brew boiler. The Lelit Elizabeth was on my short list until I learned that the steam boiler must be on for their pre-infusion feature to work.

Rancilio's build quality and customer service are solid! I think for the price I still might go with an E61 group machine but I do think this model has a good place in the world of home machines. Feels like it's a good beginning of a new design but to me, it's not quite there as it lacks the steam power you would expect of a dual boiler. I would give it 6/10 ish as it's good quality and good value for the price. Cheers! -Y

To be honest, I'd rather this semi-saturated ring group thing over an E61. I don't particularly like E61s, they take a long time to heat and they're much more finicky with maintenance than a solenoid switched group.

My experience with Rancilio US has been great. I reached out and they were very kind and sent this machine which isn’t always as simple as just asking. I think the E61 style is just that, a style and some folks like it and others don’t. I’m on the dont side of that. I prefer the saturated group build like this, the mini, etc. but both are capable of great espresso and have a place in the market.

Would you say PID is really worth it? Also, what about PID in HX machines? Someone told me PID control isn’t worth it, as long as it’s stable. Have also heard some say PID in an HX is not as beneficial, and that a dual boiler with no PID would be better option. Been debating between Bezzera Magica PID (or similar) vs the Silvia Pro X. Thoughts?
