actually the game is abandonware and its quite easy to find a download online which has both expansions, and there mostly is a really small patch included that makes it online-playable again (player-count is still quite high). missinforming review..

@@DWTerminator Back in 2014 they made the game free for everyone to download. You can't even technically pirate it anymore because first, it's abandonware, and second, it's free.

A. C. Neal It doesn’t have to be perfectly accurate because it never will be. But it does need to be accurate enough to be convincing to the average person. It might not satiate a history buff, but it’s pretty believable as a WW2 game. Seeing lesbian feminists cyborgs taking out a building with one rifle shot is retarded. That’s not just historical inaccuracy. It’s completely immersion-breaking.

Back in the day i used to play this at 1600x1200 at 75Hz on an LG F700P 17" CRT monitor with a Radeon 9800PRO and Athlon Barton XP with a gig of RAM. There is a few updates you could do with this, there is some erronous info in your review. There is a patch to fix the missing Gamespy server. You can now play 256 players on one map, and you could always run it at higher resolutions.

Further, i ran it at maxed out settings, and it didn't run janky as hell either. Ran perfectly. Still does now.

I don't know where that "it's aged poorly" angle comes from. I think the graphics look rather good for their time and still hold up decently well today. Of course it's not going to compare to anything recent, but it still is rather pleasing to look at for what it is. As for technical issues, the only ones I experienced are crashing on the main menu screen sometimes in Windows 10, which is understandable given when it came out. In game though, I never experienced any bugs or issues. It's easy to get 1942 at 1080p today, without the weird HUD issues you were seeing, and patching in 3rd party multiplayer isn't terribly difficult either. You may be surprised to know there's still full servers for this game 24/7, which I'd say is a pretty good testament to its timelessness and how much most people still enjoy it. You neglected to mention one of the biggest selling points of this (and every BF) game: those "Battlefield moments." We're so used to seeing cool things happening in scripted events, especially in WW2 games. Battlefield 1942 was pretty novel in that every cool thing happening on screen was actually being done by a real player. When you blow up a tank or a plane, that happens entirely naturally. You weren't predestined to have that cool thing happen every time, yet it happened anyway, which makes it so much more rewarding and meaningful when it does happen. Sadly, although 1942 retains an active playerbase, its current playerbase in 2020 does not really understand how the team play is supposed to work. The people playing it are the same as the COD converts playing Battlefield 1. Battlefield has always been a series whose experience relies entirely on how the other players behave, which is why your enjoyment with it is going to be inconsistent, depending on who else is in the server. These days though, it's pretty rare to find a team working in unison. Most people just run for the tank or plane or CP/flag on their own, so instead of seeing giant armies clashing together, it's more like you by yourself walking through empty battlefields till you finally reach a flag where one guy just spawned in, get killed, and repeat. Another major issues is the respawn time. There shouldn't be any respawn time in the offline instant action, let alone a staggering 30 seconds before respawning. As far as I'm aware, there's no way to mod that to get rid of it or reduce it, but at least it's not anywhere near as long in online matches.

I appreciate the fact that you aren't being biased. I played Battlefield 1942 as a kid and I feel like way too many people look at it with nostalgia glasses. It was a fun game! but Medal of Honor and the first Call of Duty absolutely eclipsed it in terms of polish. Even Return to Castle Wolfenstein was better. Best thing about Battlefield 1942 were the vehicles, which neither MOH, COD (unless you had the United Offensive expansion pack) or RTCW had. Vehicles is where Battlefield 1942 100% shines. Just like you stated.

64 players was pretty high for 2002, but in 2001 Tribes 2 had support for above 100 players.

As someone who played this game when it was current on a 56k dial up connection and a very high end (for the time) pc. This game ran fine and I can't remember having any issues that where drastic or out of the ordinary for the era it was.

I've lost count of the number of times I've played through the D-Day landings, Carentan, and so forth. WWII is so incredibly played out I even have a hard time going back and playing the WWII games I actually *liked*, let alone new ones.

I actually prefer futuristic type shooters, but few do it well. Just waiting for the new unreal tournament to be done.

How different is flying an air vehicle in each BF game? I only played 1942, BC2 and 3. I can fly planes in 1942, heli in BC2 but never able to shoot anything. BF3 air vehicles's control is the worst for me, flying with mouse or keyboard is both clunky. How is air vehicles's control in everyone's best BF game - BF2? My friend said BFVN had the best control for both heli and jet. Is it true?

BF2's heli controls we're pretty decent as well. Though I'm never able to hit anything :P. It's still very hard to aim towards targets effectively. Though I've never been able to fly a jet in BF2.
