I thought both the film and book were fascinating. As a "classic film" lover, I have no problem with these truths being finally revealed. I completely believe everything he said. This is a well-done film that leaves it up to the viewer to "judge", if you will. I don't see it as an expose of Old Hollywood, rather as a long overdue story that finally reveals the truth behind the myths. Yes, Scotty is a quirky guy but we're all quirky. He has perhaps unresolved issues as do we all, but that doesn't make him any less trustworthy. I'm actually glad the film didn't go too deeply into Scotty's issues. Enough of them were shown to give the viewer an idea of them. As for the veracity of Scotty's revelations: there were many people who vouched for Scotty; many credible people. This is quite different than "Hollywood Babylon" that divulged some of the same information in a much more salacious, tabloid-ish manner. Boze Hadleigh, unfortunately, was later accused of lying and in some cases was proven a liar. Scotty, on the other hand, didn't make up stories or create stories that weren't later corroborated by a credible source. Thanks for the great video!

More power to Mr. Scotty Bowers for coming right out and putting things in perspective. Some people like this woman (Christy Lemire) seem to believe much of this is either a figment of Bower's imagination or myth. Why? Because these people are "celebrities"? Big deal. Listen, everyone who was born on this planet is no better than anyone else. Some may think they are (but that's a story for another day). Wishful thinking. No one's shit comes out gold, get me? Not only do I accept it as credible... just as important, he went ahead and made it public out of courtesy and respect for their privacy. But now that have passed, do you really think that somehow, they are turning over in their graves?? If you believe that, then I have a bridge I want to sell you! They are long gone and dead. We should accept it and move on. Come some 30 yrs from now, I'm sure many people will eventually accept it without judgement. And that's because today, particularly in the movie business, there's little to no stigma to his/her career when it comes to one's sexuality. In fact, it tends to make the individual in question more interesting to some of its fans. And many of today's celebrities know it! Many conservatives may be angered by Scotty Bower's decision to make things public. I say, good for you, sir! We salute you!!

Yes, Scotty was a hoarder, but he was also a Soldier and spent several tours defending the US. Scotty was around after the war was over and provided special services at his station, especially for Hollywood. It was a crime to say that "You were gay" in Hollywood inn the 50"s. Actors were fired if found out and was written into their acting contracts. Scotty was actually a sweet person....... and PATRIOTIC.

Old news, anyone who had anything to do with Hollywood from the beginning of time, knows the variations of lifestyles that actors lived, I had a friend who was The Hollywood Reporter from 1938 to 1942, and filled me in with all the different things that he witnessed during his times as a reporter, he said he couldn't tell half the stories because the movie makers wouldn't let him on their lot if he told the story in truth, he did relate so many different stories to myself, and he had 8 by 10 black and white photographs of himself with the different movie stars so he wasn't telling a fairytale well actually he was sometimes, but it was really interesting to find out about some of my heroes from my childhood, where are nothing like what was projected on that silvery screen every Saturday afternoon when I went to the movies as a youngster, but the word acting, means acting, and has nothing to do with real life, the reporter's name was Sparky Johnson and he was probably as interesting as any actor I've ever met, I'm sure he's long gone as he was 20 years older than myself, anyway I enjoy this little KZbin piece on Hollywood behind the curtains

I always felt as a young teen. When I saw Great stars like Tyrone Powers, Charlton Huston, Rock Hudson, and many many more they where so sexy and masculine. All those great classic movies. It was the height of sexuality and they still had to deal with the Hays code, so creative How could they not be gay and the wit and the great writing as well as all the glamour and style. Been watching What the Flick since day one just about, and I have to say I have never seen a video that shows off so remarkably well what a great back-and-forth, point-counterpoint-supplementary point style of interaction two reviewers have, than this one. The working relationship between Christy and Alonso, which is respectful, open, and eager to hear the other person's point of view, really is a treat to watch, and could be used as a model for anybody else in the professional world looking to enjoy a more fruitful, productive, and effective dynamic with whoever it is they find themselves working with. I wonder how Cenk initially pitched this whole idea of What the Flick?! to the team: did he entice Alonso with the prospect of working with Christy, and Christy the prospect of working with Alonso, as well as with the editor-of-chief of Rotten Tomatoes Matt Atchity, or what. I knew Christy from At the Movies beforehand (with that young, very green and hideously earnest tryhard Ignatiy Vishnevetsky) but had not seen Alonso's work before, although perhaps I had at Rotten Tomatoes, I just didn't know it. The problem with At the Movies is that Christy was confined by the very rigid formal style; they had her wearing rather conservative clothing and excessive foundation and speaking as if the targest demo was 55-year-old corn farmers from Iowa, just returned home from hearing about damnation and the sins of sensuality at a Presbyterian church.

You don't really need them anymore because people can be themselves now -- gay, straight or otherwise. In those days actors and actresses were required to sign a "morals clause" in a studio contract, which basically meant that you were finished in the industry if it came out that you were not heterosexual (hence the need for Scotty to provide a discreet service to hook people up). But then again, in those days you didn't have social media...

What we think warrants inclusion in our collective history books always reflect the social mores of the current time. Many famous historical figure were born out of wedlock or had “illegitimate children” but most present day adults in North America do not regard those as unmentionable, where they at one time may have been. No one would plead don’t say that or it “mars their legacy” in any way, if this is simply something historically known, testified to by several people. The fact that a person had to be closeted and this is how they dealt tells us a lot about our past and the road we’ve walked thus far in our stride for universal human rights. Like every single historical narrative, there will be a balance for society and the individual between believing vs verifying and by whom. I think this man has a right to recount his life, and he doesn’t have to lie about anything. It doesn’t sound like he did anything shameful (he’s claiming that he didn’t exploit people), and whatever he says can’t harm the person currently if that is the concern. Finding out a person was gay does not alter the greatness of their legacy in any way. Finding out personal attributes of a historical figure, gives us a richer story and adds another layer of complexity to the figure as well as our own understanding of that time.

I came out in the late 70s in the Southern California and was well aware of this history and network. This is a time when the gay parades were just starting. There were lots of people who were arrested, harassed by the police for gathering at parties in private homes or whatever. So I don't shed a lot of Tears when bad things happen to these folks. That culture is still alive and well there. Just look at how police harassed, fine, imprison and murder blacks now. The police and government officials have not been a friend of the gays. It's like Scotty said, everybody was having fun. I know the victim culture wants to paint this horrible picture. That might be true for others but in my experience everyone was having fun. Then AIDS was let loose. Some say intentionally.

I just bought the book, it’s amazing! Most of the information was public information for years, I’m very old so yes I know. To those of you who don’t think the military had a history of homosexual behavior read about the Roman’s and the Greeks taking boys along on marches that women were not suited for. I don’t believe every word but 85% is true. I remember the aftermath of the Great War. If you wanted a alternative life the west coast where to go. It's very saddening that so many gay people had to deceive the fans who loved dreaming about these people who would never be part of their lives. I just hate that so many innocent young people, even today, still fall in love with people who are not just unattainable, but that would never be able to physically love them in a lifetime. Young girls fall in love with gay men often because of their unattainability on so many levels. I don't think it's the same for Lesbian stars and straight males who might be attracted to them. (I don't think too many of them actually are attracted to many of the really overtly....um....Hepburn....Sondergaard....maybe smart girls who just didn't flirt much....with....) The issue I have with this documentary is tht these ppl arent around to defend themselves or confirm or deny if they even had sex with someone of the same gender. Like we will never know if Cary Grant was just experimenting or didn't even have sex with a man at all. I will and would never assume anything like tht unless it came out of the person's mouth themselves. Even if Scotty is telling the truth, then so wht? We tend to idolize the greatest generation. I feel it is refreshing to know that these people were just human beings like all the rest of us. The criticism that "outing" the dead is "reprehensible" is spurious at best. Is "outing" a heterosexual person in a biography also reprehensible? Until we stop viewing being gay as something an individual has the "right" to hide, then we'll never progress to the point where one's sexuality, whatever and however they see it, is equal for everyone. No one even dreams of saying the same thing about a heterosexual film star. History is slanted regardeless of whether its a documentary about gay Hollywood or the Roman Empire. Its people's interpretation of the past, and in this case their memories of the past that are put forth. I've read Scotty's book and I don't find any reason to question his veracity in his memories of his life. Of course, there are embellisments and I'm sure a lot left out too...that is how people remember and that is how histories are written...from other's recollections or comments that are filtered by the one writing. People act as if its "shocking" that box office idols, all packaged as heterosexual, were, in reality, gay. As someone commented here, its really about how gay people had to hide their true selves and what the consequences of that in their personal and professional lives were. For another take on this watch on Netflix, "The Women He Undressed", a wonderful doc. on the movie fashion designer Orry-Kelly who was Cary Grant's first boyfriend and knew the world that Scotty Bowers moved in. Also watch any biography or docu. on William "Billy" Haines who was a huge movie star in the 20's/30's and who was out completely and left the business to become Hollywood's biggest interior designer. Haine's life gives you a view of someone bravely bucking the system long before Stonewall.

Still, there's an extant real politic that makes it difficult for, say, gay male heartthrobs to come out. Outrageous, but the bottom line still dictates many a term. Homophobia lives--unfortunately. What I almost liked best about the film was the questions it posed about Scotty's psychology: what happens to an aging libertine? He's a hoarder so we know there's psychological trouble in paradise--but what, if anything, does this tell us about Scotty's "mission" in life. A fascinating film.

It is very wrong and defamatory to label someone as gay if they are not. It will result in a man not dating a woman if he hears this about her, and likewise for a man. It is extremely damaging because the person thus labeled has no chance to directly deny it before the damage is done.

I was truly disappointed on this documentary. I was expecting the director would have dived deep in Scotty's most incredible stories involving the Hollywood stars, with some new, untold stories too (Scotty certainly had many) but instead of this it was a boring film, mainly telling Scotty's dramas of the time the documentary was shot. It indeed started all fairly well, with photos of the infamous gas station, etc, but soon it focused on family problems, Scotty's health condition and his problem as object accumulator.

I think what's required here is a little more critical thinking & a little less wish fulfillment on the part of some people. The female reviewer seems to be suggesting that Scotty is suppressing the whole truth about himself. This is probably because she disagrees with his lifestyle. I quite disagree with her. Scotty appears to be way way ahead of his time. If only we could all be more like Scotty... what a wonderful world this would be.
