That gunner's sight insert is genius, you basically had to eyeball the equivalent part on the T-72B upgrade, it seems they learn from every kit.

It is quite an elegant solution for both securing and locating the piece. BF have been doing well in the Red Dawn range, The BMD are a lovely little kit too.

Maybe. They are *very* similar in capability. Unless you really want the AT22 of the Sniper missile of the T-72B or the 14-inch Tactical Move of the T-64BV there didn't seem to be much to choose between them.

I got into Team Yankee with the Red Dawn VDV army box, and initially didn't plan on running any tanks in my force. I wanted the entire paratrooper theme going. After building the 3 that came in the set, I immediately bought another box to add just because of how awesome the models look. I look forward to running a combined arms force now rather than just the paratroopers. These models look amazing and I can't wait to get some paint on them.

Nice review, the T-64 is good looking with or without the added armour, no cards is a bummer, guessing they are in the new Red Dawn card/box set only, if so shame since they are sold separately and can be fielded in a regular soviet force.

No unit cards is BF’s current policy. I guess I can see their point. If you buy multiple boxes you end up with extra cards. But it does make the platoon box sets incomplete. You need to make an additional purchase to field the unit.

Very nice review. The just slight differenece in stats between the T-72 B and the T-64 BV reflects the real thing: Why did the soviet army use tanks, which are that similar? And it is an actual question still: Why having T-72s, T-80s and T-90s in service?

Trekan, that’s a good question. I think the history section hints at the answer. It’s probably in the full history in the Yuri’s Wolves video. The T-64 was an ambitious project. It introduced a raft of new technologies - laminate armour, a new engine, suspension, a new gun, an autoloader, new fire control systems. All these take time to perfect. T-64’s designer had influence. Enough to keep the project going. But the military were nervous the new tank project might fail. The T-72 design was started as a simpler, cheaper option using more existing technology. It was designed as a wartime expedient design. One that would only be built in an emergency. However it was ordered into serial production and brought into service. But the T-64 also worked, and that was ordered into production as well. The strategy was to have a high/low mix. Lots of cheap T-72s to give the Soviet tank forces mass, and the similar but more advanced T-64 for the technological edge. Plus T-72 was a successful export tank to replace T-55s in foreign service with better tanks, while the T-64 remained exclusively for Soviet use. And both designs were updated as new technology became available, shrinking the performance gap even further. That’s my understanding of how the Soviets ended up with different designs with similar capabilities.

@@FogofWar That was the idea. But even if working the T-64 needed much more maintenance and logistics - and was much more expensive. Also the soviet doctrine based on little trained conscripts. Many soviet generals didn't like the T-64 because it was to complicated in their eyes. Using the T-64 and the T-72 - or T-80 and T-90 - shows in my eyes a strange ambivalence of the soviet military towards their own doctrin. They were planning to overthrow the NATO tanks with bigger units - but wanted a tank to fight the Abrams, Leopard and Challanger in a duell situation too. Which is at some point even a relativization of the idea of a MBT.

@Emtos I know that story behind the development of both tanks. What I am saying that's very strange to have these "duality of tanks after decades still. An army needs ONE MBT to get the job done. It needs one IFV to get the job done, one APC. No compromise like the russian T-72 based "Terminator". All this makes everything - training, producing, spare parts situation, which unit can execute which task etc. - more complicated. Have you ever heard of the US-american MBT "Hodges"? No? Of course not, because it doesn't exsist. Thers the "Abrams" just. For reasons. As wargamer I am happy that the Soviet/Russian do such things. Therefore we have much more interesting models. And much more intersting and entertaining videos by Harry! 😉

My Soviet force is a T64 Battalion so a company of these may be a nice addition to them although I am still painting up my Israeli Merkava Battalion and Soviet T80 Shock battalion too!

I am not familiar with Russian tanks for team yankee but can both be used in your force?

I assume you mean can T-64BV and T-72B be used in a legal Soviet list in Team Yankee? I guess you could. Either you'd need a lot of points, or you could take one type of tank organic with your Formation, and take another one as. Black Box support option. You can't take them within the single formation, but you can within the same force. Not sure why you would, though.

@@FogofWar One for long range plinking and the other for rapid movement. Yet again; I doubt this level of tactical flexibility is possible with FoW. Maybe it’s possible with Battlegroup Northag. Gotta take a look. Most definitely with A Fistful of Tows.

Now all we need are the T-64A and T-64AV and... well they'd be cheaper T-64s so... maybe they'll be a little redundant, maybe instead the T-10M and T-44MS would be more unique to add as Soviet Far East forces.
