I often get asked to recommend affordable gear. And the cheaper the better. So I set out to try and find a nice premium camera for less than $50. And also test if its any good.
Find a used Sigma at MPB and if you do, you also help support this channel by using the links below:

MPB UK, prf.hn/l/LAyw9ea
MPB EU, prf.hn/l/y8LpZpw
Or you can support me with a coffee?
www.buymeacoff...
Please Note: The pictures might be around 14mp of resolution, but they are only the size of a 5mp. So after youtubes compression and blowing it up on a full screen.... you get the idea.
Also, I've added grain to several of them in post.
Peeping is pointless ;)

If you want something modern you can buy for example the Ricoh or a Fuji here:
Ricoh GRii, www.bhphotovid...
Fuji X70, www.bhphotovid...
Or why not the Sigma Quattro, www.bhphotovid...
Like I say in the video, the prices aren't fixed. But if I could find one for $28 and three more for $50-70. So I'm sure you can to if you really try.

Eh, use any camera enough and you figure out how to bend shots out of it. I had a Panasonic TZ and found I could do fantastic short dof portraits. As long as you were using the long end of the lens. Taking portraits at 60 feet.

I may have commented on this video before. But this video made me go out and buy a Sigma DP2 early last year and incredibly driven my interest in photography since then. I since bought a few other cameras and lens sets which served me well, but these Sigma cameras and especially this review of them, have inspired me greatly. Its easy to get caught up in all the marketing jumbo and gear wars, but every so often I come back to watch this video and get reminded about why photography is so much fun.

Oh god, I have the same story) I’ve tried a lot of equipment since the purchase of sigma dp2, but the colors that this camera produces are better than most modern digital cameras could offer. It makes me take it with me again and again. It doesn’t look as solid, as other cool cameras, but the result is worth it

meanwhile in 2019, impossible to find a decent Sigma anything without wondering if you should bite the bullet and buy a new one.. which isnt a really a bad thing as Sigma's are criminally under-appreciated by the market.

I had the DP1 and DP2s - great little cameras. I used the DP1 for street and with practise it could pull off some awesome shots. The DP2s was better for portraiture and bokeh. Loved the manual focus dial also, especially welcome with the slow/poor AF these cameras have. A good starter camera for little money. Not overly complex and forces you to slow down a little and think about what you are doing. Files look just as good at 100% which is fortunate considering how small the files are!

A DP1 for $28!?!?!? I sold mine for $250! And I regret it, because even having cameras that are 10+ years newer and technically far better, the older Foveon sensors are still insanely capable and provide for some really unique (and beautiful) rendering. I've had people ask if it's medium format. Then I tell them it's a 4.something megapixel compact.

I did a test with a bunch of compact and point cameras from 2001 to 2005. They were all $10-40 and all produced great images. My favorite was either the Sony DSC-V3 or the Minolta DiMage 7. The Minolta had the best images if you got the shot right, the V3 was easier to carry around and use.

The Sigma DP1 is what got me back into photography in 2008. Let me supplement your review. The Foveon sensor is the ONLY sensor available that captures light vertically, like film. The Achilles heal of Bayer sensors (every other camera) is that single primary colors, (RGB) are one per pixel and then averaged together (de-bayering). If you think about it, you'll realize that pixels can borrow incorrect neighboring values which create chromatic distortions. I have some samples of this in one of my reviews of a Sigma camera here: maxotics.com/2014/07/12/sigma-dp2-quattro-review/ Before I go on, let me say, categorically, even the old and lowly DP1 is a MONSTER CAMERA, image IQ-wise. If you're shooting in 100 ISO light and you can get exposure and focus right, the image will, I am not exaggerating, rival that of a Nikon D810 at fraction of the size, weight and cost. It will also crush the Leica M8 IMHO. That's the good. Onto the bad: o. Plain and simple, coming from any other camera you will find these cameras super SLOW and FRUSTRATING! o. ISO 100 only (even 200 is pushing it) o. You only have 6 stops of dynamic range. THAT IS PLENTY, but means no room for error, exposure wise. o. Not only is the cameras slow, Sigma's software which you need to process these special RAW files is also slow (It's slow because each pixel measures color by how far down each wavelight makes it through the material. Unlike Bayer sensor camera, it requires massive amounts of computations which slow down both camera and PC. o. You can't work with Foveon RAW files in PhotoShop! That should give you an idea of the complexity and challenges of film-like sensor technology--even for deep-pocketed Adobe. (You have to use Sigma's free software to process the RAW files, though after minor work you can save in full-color TIFF and further process in PhotoShop). o. For every 10 photos I take with those cameras, only 1 is good (but makes me want to cry good). o. In situations where there is backlight, or fine lines, or anything that confuses a bayer sensor, the Sigma shines. o.Fuji tries to fix the limitation of bayer sensors by randomizing the color filters. That adds a bit of softness. You'll read very hot debates about Sigma cameras on many forums. Before you believe anything knocking the IQ, check to make sure the person has ACTUALLY used these cameras in a real way. I used to use a DP1M as my pocket camera but have moved onto the GR, because it's so much faster, easier, flexible to use in any way. HOWEVER, if I/you pixel peep, at ISO 100, the Sigma camera delivers a richer, more film-like image than the GR or any other Bayer sensor camera. In short, forget the price, these cameras deliver a film-like look at ISO 100 that you CANNOT GET from any other camera at any price. Here are some of my albums taken with that camera www.flickr.com/photos/maxotics/albums/72157622454445559 www.flickr.com/photos/maxotics/albums/72157622606251468 And YES, I still have that camera! If you're in the Boston area and would like to borrow, let me know. The final irony is that if Oskar Barnack were alive today he'd have a Leica with Foveon sensor. Indeed, the monochrome Leica is nothing but a Foveon-like sensor that can't sample separate wavelengths of light. That's why you'll see many monochrome photographers using Sigmas to get stellar B&W images at a fraction of the cost of a Leica monochrome. It sounds like Mattias only worked with the in-camera JPGs. If so, and if he works with the RAW files one day, expect another review with one of their later cameras ;)

Hey, Nice comment, love it. But I feel I must address a few points where my opinion differ and a few that are wrong. It might be true for the Quattro but that should be clarified for others sake. First the wrongs :) Your wrong about me shooting jpegs, all the images are Raw. All the Raw images are processed in Adobe Lightroom which supports the DP1, DP2 and DP1s (photoshop works as well). Using Lightroom has no impact on slowing the computer compared to other cameras. Its not correct that its only 6 stops of DR. Absolutely not. Where its just my opinion/experience that differ :) It is slow but not compared to most film cameras, so I just adapt.The slow film like process increases the number of keepers. You get 1-10, I get more like 7-10. All my images are ISO200, 400 is also fine for B&W IMO. Again, appreciate your comment and input, a good read :) /M

Regarding the DR I don't need to see a study no more than you need to see examples. I only watch photos, never graphs or diagrams since they aren't what I shoot :) First we would also have to agree on if where talking about DR in a jpeg or the Usable RD from a Raw file. In my video there are several pictures that clearly has more than 6 stops. I've peeked enough video as a videographer to be able to spot 8, 10, 12 and 13 stops.So lets just leave it at us having a different opinion/experience of the DR in a DP1 :)Im glad you enjoy my videos, maybe I will do one on my DP2 and the DP2m I was offered to borrow as well :)
@MaxoticsTV
@MaxoticsTV 7 жыл бұрын
Data analysis (graphs and diagrams) help me understand what I experience shooting. When you or I go out with cameras I believe we have the same approach. Again, I couldn't care less what DR a camera has. I have ZERO interest in arguing with anyone about how much DR the Sigma has, or any other camera. Like you, I'm not interested in camera competitions, only what they can do on their own. However, I do believe there is some knowledge here which we may differ on, and if so, one of us could benefit from us both coming to the same focus As I explain (badly, maybe you can do a better video), about S-LOG, you can record what looks like 13 stops of DR from the physical world on a camera, but when looked at in the real world of image quality, is at a sacrifice of color quality throughout the image. In other words, in any video where you believe you have spotted 13 stops of dynamic range I believe that image is severely compromised in a way that is very important to understand. Again, my point about the Sigma DP1, and their other Foveon cameras, is that you can't make a similar compromise/trade-off in color saturation for noisy DR, like you can on other cameras, say from Sony, Nikon, Canon, etc. Why? Most people think about ISO as a setting on a camera. It can be used that way, but anyone serious about photography knows that ISO is a MEASUREMENT! And a complicated one at that! Crudely, it says that at ISO 100 you can perfectly saturate a pixel with light at F/1 at one second (if I remember correctly). What it does NOT say is how sensitivity drops as the sensor is exposed to light beyond that optimum ISO. As you know, the look of any image shot at 3200 ISO, or 5 stops away from base ISO, is different for different cameras. It make look usable to you on a NIkon, but not a Canon. People will differ on this until the end of time ;) Anyway, when I say that the DP1 is 6 stops of dynamic range it is backed up by the fact that the camera has a max usable ISO of 800 (even too much data for me here!: www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/DP1/DP1IMATEST.HTM) The Sony Nex3, which I believe contemporaneous to the DP1, has a max ISO of 3200, or 2 full stops beyond the DP1. What does that tell us???? It tells us that the Sigma camera has a shorter sensitivity curve beyond perfect exposure than the bayer camera. The manufacturers would like people to believe that a camera that can shoot at ISO 6400 is better than a camera that can't. It is, IF, and a big IF, you want to trade saturation for contrast. Put another say, the DP1 allows for a very limited trade-off of saturation for contrast. So I'm saying, don't even try. If you accept that, you don't care about DR, you only care about saturation within the normal 6 stops of dynamic range we look at ALL images in in the real world (We don't look at anything in 10 stops of DR, if we did, our pupils would dilate and bring it back down to 6). Yet another way I might make this argument is many people get mislead by others into believing you have to have high DR in a camera. It's taken me years to realize that gray-scale-test DR is NOT what I want. What I want is the best color accuracy within the DR I'll look at the image in (under 6 stops). So a knee-jerk reaction to my claiming the DP1 only has 6-stops is based on all this group-think that effects us all--screwed me up at least ;) Some manufacturers/photographers who use bayer imply that their cameras are better than Sigma because they have wider latitude of sensitivity. They're right, IF, IF, IF, you shoot higher than ISO 100. What they don't want to do is fairly compare their cameras against the Sigma at ISO 100. Only when you take the time to do that, shoot Sigma at 100 and ANY OTHER camera at 100 and compare the results do you have that AH HA moment! Sorry this is such a long post!

There is no way I would ever call s-log3 13stops of usable DR, no chance. But no way the Sigma Raw has 6 stops either. I will leave it at that :)

Partially based upon your review I purchased an Olympus Stylus 1 as an all around, keep it in the car, you never know camera. I love it. I find it very versatile and for $200 US what the hell. I even purchased the T-CON 17X teleconverter. I think it falls into the cheap and great category.

Not all the time. Remember what I said in the video. Good deals aren't just sitting there, they sell... within seconds. You have to look and look again. Every day. This video will probably boost prices, but only briefly :)

It's been a year since I started looking for these miracle deals on sigma dp or ricoh gr. Every day, few times per day, have a notification set up for new arrivals but no luck. Bit a bullet and paid €135 for dp1 today. I hope it's not going to die on me like my pentax Q10. Would love to have ricoh gr2 but sadly can't afford one...

I love your channel Mattias, very succinct and informative, while the presentation is superb. I have an SD quattro (as well as several Fuji and a Ricoh GR) and if you learn the merits and limits of the Foveon sensor, you can get some really sweet results. By the way I am thinking of getting a pet and thanks to you I think it's going to be a French bulldog! Cheers from Seoul.

Hey, this is a great video. I purchased a used Olympus XZ-10 a few years ago because it fit in any and every pocket I have and because it has a built in ND. To my surprise it has a bunch of other features that I love, especially the aperture ring on the stubby lens and the art filters. The camera cost me $ 75 and it takes awesome photos. I now have 5 used cameras all working well and all cost me much less than a new model. Keep up the good work.

The cheapest camera I bought on ebay was a canon 10d with a 50mm 1.8 ii for $60. Then I sold the lens for $65. So I made $5 on buying it

The original Sigma SD1 which uses interchangeable lenses, cost £10k when released. You can now pick them up for about £750.Not exactly budget cameras but it shows how quickly technology has moved on.Still excellent image quality that rivals medium format but you need the patience of a saint to use both the camera with it's limitations and their own software, which is needed to process images.If you do have patience you will be highly rewarded by the images you will get with it.

Thats why I enjoy the DP1, no need for other software than Lightroom for the Raw files. I have played a lot with downloaded files in SPP to try and get along with it so I can get a Quattro, Merril or even SD1 :) So far Im not very impressed. But Ive been offered to borrow a merril for a few weeks so maybe the quality will change my mind.

I was so excited when I saw this video. I was ready to spend $50 or less and get back onto photography. Then I looked for the cheapest I could find it for, and cried. 😢 At least $150 on eBay, most over $200. I guess nothing good can last. I'll keep looking though. ✌🏼

Thanks for all the beautiful work, love your videos. I have a question for you, am looking into buying a compact fixed lens or limited range(28-70mm) and was wondering are their any that you would recommend more for black and white rendering. The megapixel is not so important. The one thing I do want is a flip up screen, with this i can even live without an EVF. Many thanks and again thank for the beautiful work.

Hi Mattias, I really appreciate your videos, I am a little confused about the Sigma dp1. There are various models and the Merrill model, which seems much more expensive on the used market. I assume the model you got was the original dp1 with the 5MP sensor?
@gearreallydoesntmatter
@gearreallydoesntmatter 6 жыл бұрын
Matt Pitts Yes the original. I had the Merrill but didnt like it because the raw files dont work in Lightroom. I prefer the original DP1/DP1 and the Quattro line.
