The best thing about it for me is that its the only amp under 500 that for me really plays and showcases tonal color and timbre. Its brash to be sure but given the right speaker and you hear wood and metal and feel and aurally see the strings being played.

What are a couple examples of the "right speaker" in your opinion?
@Audiorevue
@Audiorevue Жыл бұрын
@@svalbard01 well I've always thought that probably one of the best pairings for NAD amplifiers is dali speakers, or Klipsch for that matter. They are both different sonically but they both pair well with a 316 bee.
@Audiorevue
@Audiorevue Жыл бұрын
@@svalbard01 oh by the way the way that you put right speaker in quotation makes me think you're a bit taken aback by my use of that phrase. That's of course the tragedy of using comments or text messages as we do for modern communication, so much nuance is left unsaid and more and more statements are left to singular interpretation. I suppose all I was saying was that it's a fantastic amplifier, and probably one of the best sonically that I've heard for the money, it gives me what I want to hear. A lot of other amplifiers don't at that price. Now granted some of them do things better and have more features but none of them really present that true tone to instruments and music that I enjoy listening to. The only downside to the 316 that I've found is it's volume control is a bit wonky. Essentially it doesn't give you much range for low level listening, I tend to be a low level listener and you either have it at 7:00 and it's perfect volume or you have it at 8:00 and it's so loud it's shaking the windows. That's my only real criticism is that there is no fine gradient to the volume level. But other than that it's perfect

The BEE of NAD’s BEE series of components pays homage to its designer Bjorn Erik Edvardsen, who also designed the storied 3020 integrated amplifier that put the company on the map three decades ago. I believe this was the last amp he designed before his death. A fitting tribute

Bought one today with the matching cd player. In my opinion it's the best of a vintage amp in a modern package. It has the best detail and "reveal" of any amp I've ever owned. Nothing gets lost in the mix - everything has distinct character and personality. It has a bit of a forward sound - for example some male vocals sound a little chesty, but it's not uncomplimentary, just a warm presentation. The tone controls add minimal effect but I find bypassing them is fine; bass is unexaggerated with lots of tonal quality and musicality, opposed to boom. High end is natural and pleasant on the ear. ( I have Martin Logans). For $500 canadian its a bargain audiophile's amp.

My Nad C316 BEE V2 is paired with some vintage Tannoy T125's and Garrard turntable. It sounds absolutely wonderful, warm, rich, and powerful. And considering the cost of the amp and speakers (used price about £75-100), it's excellent value.

Curious... which Wharfdale speakers are you using with this Amp? Do you prefer it to the Onkyo? I also have the Onkyo 9010 and it's hooked to JM Labs (Focal) Aline 3.1... and (on rotation) the Wharfdale Denton 80th Anniversary. They both sound great. Alines have deeper lows and sparkly highs while the Dentons have tighter lows, slightly rolled-off highs and sweeter mids. I wonder if the NAD C316BEE would sound better with the Wharfdale Denton?

@@jrockofages5413 After about 70 hours the sound changes so much, it’s like it becomes a different amp, very smooth as I say, the highs rolled off very flat bass not very good, over all looses its dynamics. Sure you can always change things with the Eq or maybe brighter sounding cables Like QED silver anniversary or using a CD player that has more sparkle. Sound staging is good on the Iota playing Queen A Kind Of Magic with all the panning stereo effects sounded amazing. Great review as always! Bought this about a month ago. Very impressed. Maybe not enough bass for my liking but the bass is very articulate as you stated. The only gripe I have is the feedback you get when you switch to MP and you do not have a phone/mp3 player hooked up yet. Kinda jarring. Also the volume knob does not need to be cranked at all to get high volume. I can only turn it up by a quarter and it shakes the house. You were totally right in stating that this is an entry level model for people just getting started.

Hey Sean, I've been into the audio hobby for a while and I currently have the first version of the NAD C 316BEE paired with the KEF Q150 speakers and an SVS SB1000 sub in a 740 sq. ft. open floor plan, 1-bedroom apartment. The combination is brilliant. I'm glad to see that all went well and that you're feeling better. Thanks for reviewing this piece of gear. I hope you get the chance to pair it with the KEF Q150 speakers as well. I took your recommendations on the AQ cables and I went with the Golden Gate ICs and I used the Type 8 speaker cables with BFA/BFA connectors. I'm running 14/2 tinned copper wire from furez cables from the binding posts on the back to the speaker level inputs on the sub. The synergy overall is really nice. I had a few folks over from the Polk forum to hear the setup and their summation was that it sounds, "stellar." I was glad they were hearing what I'm hearing!

That NAD dynamic headroom tho, definitely makes for a surprisingly lively, dynamic and fun listening experience. The authoritative snap crackle & pop of transients, toe-tapping pace, rhythm & timing. legacy NAD 3240PE + Pioneer BS22 speakers + AntiCable speaker wire = one of the best 6 months of my life when I needed to get back to basics and take a break from me reference system. #goodtimes I never quite got the same finesse experience from the C316BEE, both times I bought it. I actually think the true descendant of the 3020 is the *D3020*. Much more neutral sound signature but still delivering that dynamic & fun NAD house sound.

@CLAGMAN1000 In my personal experience, quality control seems to be an issue for NAD. The first D3020 I bought sounded terrible. (V1 with the blacked out remote keys). The next one I bought many months later sounded much better (V1.1 with white remote keys). I noticed the same thing about warm-up, which seems odd for a Class D amp. And the exponential readout in dB for the volume is kinda annoying to adjust yer thinking, I agree. Or did you mean the feel of the physical volume knob?

Another great review. From your articulation, I think you've settled the doubt that I have, about the version 2 of the 316BEE. The older version has a laid back mid range and the bass is... darker. Overall it's warm sounding. But I think the power has remained the same. So they have adapted their products to match current needs, the trend have changed. Thanks again for doing what you do.

Design wise they are simple and old-fashioned. But those that care about the sound quality and reliability, then NAD represents great quality and dependability. It pairs well with brighter speakers. In fact some speakers pairs well with most amps, but shines with a particular amp, and sometimes it takes a while to get a good match. The NAD pairs well with most V set speakers; it works very well with Klipsch. I'm very happy with the NAD C316BEE.

And if I add the Ifi Zen One Signature which is a Dac to both. Which one would serve me better and get the most out of it musically? And yes, I also attach the TV to the DAC through the digital input. This is how it helps me listen to music via stream, CD and watch movies. Greetings from Argentina!

Nice review. Didn't expect the NAD to not have the old house sound. I have some older NAD integrateds/power amps and I'm a sucker for that warmer sounding power. I find that they pair well with some Elac B6.2s I have. Tone that top end down just a smidge which really helps. I find them bright on other pieces. Jones tuned that treble up higher than normal. You don't hear that on the cheapie Pioneers, or, on the UniFi B5s from what I gather. From your review I think I'd lose it if I ran a set of Klipsch on a C316, lol! But I bet the Pioneer SP-BS22lrs or 52s would sound pretty good on this as a nice budget system!

that's not exactly how speakers work, as a general rule maybe but generalixing is not good practice. i would say that all speakers benefit from headroom so hundreds of watts is the way to go if you can. that said, 30 watts let you play loud enough on most speakers, its the small speakers that could require most watts and go below 85db sensitivity, tower speakers usually plays louder for each watt.

sudd no I was saying it's good to have head room you use a true 30 watts out of a 40 watt amp then your thd level will rise up and you'll have a higher distortion level compared to a 100 watt amp at 30watts and yes a true clean 30 watts is load but a lot of speakers now days are at 6 ohm and below 90 db

Outstanding job with the review! I have to replace my 3240 (suffering from wear and tear). Loved the sound, it was indeed not neutral, a bit forward, my old Triangle column speakers are hard to drive so it worked well. Hesitating now between 316 and 356. I appreciate the inclusion of a phono stage in 316, no need to add an extra box. By the way you didn’t comment about the phono stage quality... Also I am now confined in a 15m2 room for listening (plus a staircase when I open the door for a cathedral effect!), so I guess I do not need the extra power of 356. I am thinking that with the budget saving I might upgrade my phono cartridge from Shure N95 to the next level... Again thanks for the in-depth review.

Interesting review. I had a NAD unit on my long list at one point (not this one). This is actually good for a smallish room too. I agree, smart move on NAD's part. Yeah, forward sounding speakers, had you mentioned Paradigm back when the Studios were around I would have said, "dude, what are you talking about"! Having heard the new Personas twice (their expensive flagship speaker) the question becomes, "Paradigm, what the hell were you thinking"? The Studios are near the perfect speaker given that there is no such thing as the perfect speaker, but the Personas to me sound thin and timid at standard listening level and grating at louder level. I didn't know we had similar listening levels. I'm a low volume guy as well, which to me means I'm not an audiophile because I still have great hearing partly due to not playing at audiophile levels. (I have run out of some rooms at trade shows before because they could not work the volume knob).

Yep, very good review on the NAD (I just call it a NAD, not N.A.D.), however, I have its older sibling, the 7240PE receiver (the receiver version of the 3240PE integrated) and like the 316, it's a powerhouse, though it CAN definitely go down to 2 Ohms and at that level, it can kick out 550W at clipping, and like the 316, its "nominal" wattage is 40wpc, but is more likely 60W instead, and it sounds it too. Made between 1988-1992 and has that bit of the warm side of neutral sound, but again, with that bit of a brilliance band emphasis for dynamics of both the micro/macro level, something you don't find with most receivers. The PE here stands for power envelope, which means its definitely has high current for all that headroom. Even the family resemblance is similar, though mine is a gray/black look, but of similar size. I run my NAD with some vintage ADS speakers that work very well with it. However, both the 3240, and 7240PE models have the jumpers for splitting the power section from the preamp section if you want to. If I do anything, it's move up to a unit, such as the vintage 1300 preamp with more inputs and go with I think it's the 2600 power amp section to do separates. As is, the stereo is definitely a fun unit to listen to.

This is where nonsense gets repeated online. The NAD 3240 puts out 250 watts per channel @ 2 ohms for 200 milliseconds (max dynamic power) NOT 550 watts at clipping. Big difference.
@johnhpalmer6098
@johnhpalmer6098 5 жыл бұрын
@@carlosoliveira-rc2xt Um, are you sure as NAD tends to be conservative in their power output so estimates are for 40WPC is closer to 60W RMS. Williston Audio Labs used an SMD amplifier dyno AD-1 test equipment to test for RMS and the ratings were double from what NAD published on the 7240PE, which at 8 Ohms gave him 83/80, left/right at 1.0% Distortion, burst dyno was closer to 217/204W at clipping. For 2 Ohms, this receiver cranked out (albeit at short bursts of a few nanoseconds) 511/498 W L/R. I run some 6 Ohm vintage ADS L810 speakers and they are a dynamic pair for certain. So I'm taking into account not what is published but what is well known by those that have actually tested these and this video is not that old so we're looking at a 28 year old, give or take receiver. So either way, it's a punchy and dynamic little bugger.

I'd love to do this Ravi, but there are three major issues that prevent most reviewers from doing what you described. The first thing is (1) Time. What you suggest would add weeks to the reviewing process. Even the boys who do this for a living cannot realistically get this done on a regular basis. And if time wasn't a factor, you then run into the second problem, (2) Logistics. Where exactly is someone going to store a dozen+ products and shipping cartons? And lastly (3) Most manufacturers wan't their stuff back. Well, unless you're a paid-off KZbinr that is - and there are MANY of those. Still, odds are you'll have to spend your own money on at least some of the gear, and that gets expensive very quickly. So yep, maybe one of the inspired KZbinrs wh do whatever it takes to make money will explore that route - but it certainly won't be me!

Nice "old British School" integrated. One question: this NAD is manufactured in Great Britain, or is it made in the Far East? I say this because in the past, British Hi-Fi brands were very proud in making at home their products, no matter the price point of them. They thought that having a close up control over their gear production guaranteed a better and uniform consistency in the final results (and perhaps they were right). A retailing price of roughly 400 bucks Last observation: at first glace it exhibits a clear layout and seems to be solid enough. If it sounds as good as it looks, it could be a "best-seller".

@@ShellstaTube I'm aware of the options, just don't like any of them. Don't want my signal going through anything else, unless it absolutely has to. And if I purchase something else with a sub out. It won't have to. I also don't like being limited in my choices of subs. This already doesn't have many options as it is (no DAC, BT, or tape output. So no recording, or EQ/processor hookup). The least they could have done was put a sub or Pre out, especially considering many people will likely be using this in a small room, or near field/desktop situation w/ small bookshelf speakers. That being said. It does appear they spent the money on quality components instead, which is great. Just don't think adding the sub out costs enough to risk losing customers over is all. They're probably thinking like you are. If someone wants it. They'll step up to the next model. I think many people will choose another amp in the same price range instead (of course that amp may end up being their own D 3020 v2 anyway). Either way. It's a no go for me right off the bat. And I would much rather lose an input, or two even, to get an output instead. Heck take away the headphone out even. That's fine with me. But that's just my take on it. @@ShellstaTube I've never used a sub. But I'm looking at the Rythmik L12. It has high, and low inputs. I'd like to be able to make my own decision on which one sounds best though. And I already own 4 external DACs, including a NOS Scott Nixon Tube DAC I love. I've actually never tried an onboard one, and I want to. In theory it should be better, all things being equal of course. With the direct connection (i2s?), and all. This is all hypothetical though anyway. This amp isn't really powerful enough for the speakers (Denton 80th Anniversary) I would use it with anyway. Seems they need a good amount of power to sound good, and maintain their dynamics at low volume. Thankfully I've got plenty of gear to use in the meantime, while I decide which way I want to go. Whatever way that is though. I would prefer as many options as possible. Sometimes the slightest little difference in a setup can be just enough to get you where you want to be. Choices are good. 😉👍 ✌️

I have a C375BEE and have spent a bit of time with the KEF R700s. The KEFs are a brighter / more foward signature. You are going to get more bass from the larger cabinets / number of drivers of the 700s than the 300s. That said, the 375 will provide a fullness of sound well over the 316 due to it's power, so should go a long way to addressing the defficiency of the 316. Luv my 375. The KEF R series are real nice too. If bass is a little lean with the 300s but you don't have the space/budget for larger cabinets - you a. Have tone control (use moderately), b. (upgrade / later?)
