CSMedia; Super! Glad you all like the horn! Yamaha makes a tremendous trumpet. I honestly doubt that Louis Armstrong every had a horn made as tight as the Yamaha's are made. I hope the horn serves you well and you prosper greatly with it! :)

Ian; Thank you. I've got a long way to go - but I'm working at it and having a blast. Advice to help your range... Yes; I'll give you a few tips I've picked up. One of the great trumpeters of the 1900's, Rafael Mendez, said this, "...Scales, scales and more scales!" That's such a big part of playing. I start at the low Gb and do every scale up as high as I can go. Tongue, slur it, but do it as well as you can every time. Then I read a guy (at Trumpetherald.com) that said the one thing that helped his range most in college was lip trills and pedal tones. Take a C in the staff and slur up to an E in the staff and back down.... Do it in quarter notes, then eighth notes, then sixteenths; as fast and as slow as you can. Then play a low C - below your lowest Gb. That way your taxing your upper range (and building muscle with the lip trills up there) and loosening up your low range with pedal tones. I'll make a vid and put it up here for you within a couple days, ok? By the way - nice touch on the piano! :)

I've used a ton of different mouthpieces over the years. At one time I used a Bach 1, then a 2. For years I liked Warburton's 4 series, maybe like your Bach 3C. Finally, I started experimenting with smaller pieces and have liked them better. Ususally, though, the bigger the mouthpiece the better tone you get; deeper, darker and more volume. The 3C is used by some absolutely top pros - I think that's what Arturo Sandoval uses - and he may be the best trumpeter alive right now.

I bought this trumpet for my freshman year of college (music major). From playing on an old rusty Getzen to playing this horn, I can definitely feel the difference and I am loving this horn. However, will this horn be acceptable in the next step up of concert performance? Post grad etc.

Thanks Jonathan, we nipped into Yamaha UK London yesterday after viewing several KZbin videos, including yours, in the prospect of purchasing the YTR4335 GS II, that we were set on. However, after comparing the YTR5335 GSII valve action and how comfortable it was in the hand, it felt right to bring it home. It is a YTR 6335 by all accounts less bell strucure, possibly why it is being discontinued. After not playing trumpet for some 45yrs on an old repaired, (Boosey & Hawks) that was much loved, despite it being welded, (purchased courtesy of an astute trumpet teacher) I had to chuckle in embarrassment in the limited amount of notes that could be found, thank goodness for a soundproofed booth. Will be starting from scratch but there was improvement within the hour, so patience is a friend and playing christmas carols, dance band and Jazz will be looked forward too. Thanks :)

Great to hear you found a horn you like! :) And welcome back to the trumpet; very nice to hear. I quit playing for most of my late 20's, 30's and early 40's so I can relate (a bit) to your comeback. I've had a blast even though the trumpet can be a VERY frustrtating instrument. Feeling great one day...Then quite humbled the next. :) I found a tremendous amount of wisdom at TrumpetHerald.com, loved the Forum sections and feel like I've made a good number of freinds from that site. TrumpetMaster.com is similar but it just wasn't quite for me what TrumpetHerald.com is (although a lot of guys are active on both). At any rate, welcome back to the trumpet family. Continued best wishes!!

Well we did purchase a brand new Yamaha YTR 5335gsii, it had to be returned as there was what appeared to be a 1/4inch circle of black mould on the inner valve so replaced. The second one developed some sort of patchy discolouration inside the valve brass area and started to have sticky valves despite cleaning. It was returned to Yamaha for inspection and without informing they lapped the middle valve that was felt unacceptable on a new instrument. The attraction of this trumpet was indeed the incredible and very slick valve moment but it came as a shock to have the valves sticking, never experienced that before. Until Yamaha sort their Monel problem out then they can not be recommended.

Alan, I'm going to guess there is, but I'm not really a Yamaha guy and couldn't tell you what it is. On some of their models Yamaha will change leadpipes, bell gauge (thickness of metal), some bracing stuff, etc. I actually have been playing more Bach stuff recently, sorry I can't give you exact details. Best wishes for a happy New Year!

Yes, I suppose I could. Most trumpeters think that's cool. In one video I do go to an F over high C; no need for much more than that although it can be fun. My family doesn't care a lot for high note playing; most folks that don't play trumpet seem to find the lower range a bit more appreciable. Thanks for the thought - I'll try and add some upper range for 'ya.

Great question! How much do you love your child? (JUST a little bit of humor!! [I've actually heard this when I was raising my kids - super tacky, right?[). Really, to me several things come into the equation; how much does he practice? This lets you know if he really likes playing - of course a pro horn is easier, therefore 'funner' to play - but if he doesn't practice much at all I wouldn't go overboard on purchasing. If it's going to be a long lasting thing, through High School, say, value is the key. If you can find a Yamaha 5335 or 4335 (considered 'intermediate horns') for $300 or less and they're in good shape - that's a good value. If you're looking at $600 or more for an intermediate horn and it were me - I'd step up to a pro horn that's used for ajust a little more $$ and I'd do that 100% of the time (in fact I almost never buy an intermediate horn but I was curious about the Yamaha in this vid [and it was a great value at a pawn shop]). Presently I have two pro horns for sale and they're an excellent value because they're from Europe and largely unknown in the U.S. They're Bach Strad 37 style horns made by B&S. One of the last horns I had from B&S I sold to a member of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra for his son... Great horns, great value. They're silver, in very good condition, fine tone (pro horns), great valves and slides and very clean - I'm asking $795 for each of them. A similar Bach Strad (a more commonly known pro horn that is identical in build and quality) would cost you at least $1250 - more likely $1500. Food for thought, Fletch. I have a vid here at KZbin about buying used trumpets, you may pick up some tips there if you buy used. Keep in touch - feel free to bounce any ideas off me....And good luck! I have 3 kids that all played in school; flute, clarinet and violin. :)

+Fletch Lives Daily. I second Jon's opinion. If he wants to stop after high school, an intermediate trumpet would be perfect for him. Vice versa if he wants to continue after high school. However, I personally think he should hold on to the student trumpet you guys currently have, but that's just me. I wish I had the Yamaha 300ADSII or Bach TR200S, since I was a sophomore and wish I would've been in marching band since my freshman year, but I digress. I would wait until he's a sophomore in high school to upgrade than right now, but again, that's just me.

Hi there Jonathan, what is the difference between the YTR4335 and this YTR5335? anything noticeable that stands out rather than just the valve tops? Is the mouthpiece the standard 11B4? Thanks.

Greetings! It's been years since I had either of them and my memory is failing me as to any differences. I'm gonna guess that the 5335 is a newer model. The 4335 that I had must have been at least 11 years ago. To me, they were both excellent horns. If I didn't know and no one told me I would have thought them both to be pro models. Yamaha has put out some great horns - and these two models are certainly well worth the money. Sorry I can't be more helpful as to specific details. :)

Eric; Greetings. I use a smaller mouthpiece, it would be about the size of a Bach 10-1/2. The maker is "Marcinkiewicz" and I usually use his Shew 1.75 or 1.5. His 6-9 pieces are about the same rim but with a deeper cup and, I think, a slightly larger backbore. Lots of his, and other, mouthpieces, available at TrumpetHerald . com - a great forum for trumpeters. And yes, this horn is a fine player. Thanks for the comments!

Jonathan Milam the 3c is great I have a very large mouth so I need the size of the 3c but I might get the Bach 1c soon the allegro still works great only two problems so far, for one spit seems to collect in my first valve slide and two spit collects in my first valve . Also have you ever herd of a mouth piece manufacturer by the name benge if so are they worth keeping because I recently found a benge 7c
@JonathanMilam1
@JonathanMilam1 11 жыл бұрын
Erich; Greetings. Eldon Benge was a great trumpet maker in, probably 1950's -1970's. He'd been, I think, the principal trumpet for the Chicago Symphony during his early trumpet making years and before. He and Schilke were friends. Anyway, his trumpets are renowned but were bought and the name continued to be used by UMC, the company that also makes King and Conn horns now. I've had some excellent Benge pieces; they can be very nice. The 7C is a good size; if one uses it you can go a bit smaller for screaming or a bit larger, like a 3C, for a nice, full, symphonic sound. I used to use a Bach 1, 1C, 2C and so on - but I've gone much smaller now. If you can handle that big a mouthpiece - they can yield a great tone with a lot of volume. Good to hear from you again, Erich.

Jonathan Milam Yeah I have a 3c that is what I use mainly, I just found the mouthpiece in an old king trumpet case in our highschool instrument storage room. I just wondered if it was any good,from what you say it seems to be very good thanks for the help Also is there any way to get some springs for my ytr-5335gsal allegro that will make the valves a little harder to press , say give it a harder compression if you have any ideas they would be appreciated. The Bach 3C is an excellent mouthpiece. It's just a bit large for me; I lose about too much range. I've always wondered if that's because of my mouth size, teeth and so on or if I just don't practice enough. Since I've started using a smaller piece (about equal to a Bach 10-1/2D or so, my range has gone up about 1/2 an octave. Still, I do like the bigger sound of the larger mouthpiece. Good luck with the 3C - it does yield an excellent sound when one can handle it.

The new Strads, the 190's, are hard to beat in my opinion. Then again, I think the Shires Q records VERY well. It's been too long for me to compare the Yamaha Allegro... I've had too many nights since then. I got this Allegro (years ago, granted), in a Pawn Shop just outside Houston for like $250. It was WELL worth that, but I don't know how it'd compare to a 190. Bach went all out on these new horns, trying to recapture their dominance by putting their best design principles to work - and striving for consistency.

Paul; sorry so long to respond. I'm traveling a lot and not keeping up as well as I should. I did have the Yamaha Shew horn and it did not work for me at all. Mine, like many, was very stuffy. I think the problem was the small leadpipe size. That horn really works well for some and really doesn't for some. Strange thing is - I'm not a big wind guy and it still didn't work for me. The mechanics of the Yamaha horns are excellent; I've had many and enjoyed their precise quality but the Shew horn was a model that didn't work for me at all. The Shew mouthpieces didn't work for me either; they were a bit large. I think his are near the Bach 3C size; I'm used to something between a Bach 10 and 7. Thanks for asking. Anything else - just post. I'll try to be quicker next time. :)

Evan; Greetings. Here's what I think: Very few people, if any, in a blind test would be able to tell the difference between the tone of a Yamaha 5335 and a Yamaha 8--- series. Still, I've heard (just heard, no personal experience here) that some professors prefer their upper class students to have certain instruments. So, it'll probably depend on the professor you get and exactly what they want and what they pressure you to get. I think many pro's feel that their is a big difference between a starter horn, like a Yamaha 2335, and a pro horn, like a Yamaha 8335. Many pros (but not all) feel that some intermediate horns, like this 5335G, may play almost as well as a pro horn. Again, much will depend on who your instructor is and what they want. I almost never buy new horns for two reasons; 1 - they're awfully hard to break in (valves, slides, etc.) and 2 - they're just soooo expensive. I'm perfectly happy buying a used Bach Stradivarius for $800 - $1,000 but paying full price of $2,400 would bother me immensely. While I bought new horns when I was younger - I just won't do it now (unless it's a phenomenal deal and a really hard horn to find). I've bought several Strad horns from $400 to $800. So, if you're instructor wants you to buy a pro horn - you don't have to go new. If you choose to sell your Yamaha 5335 to get a pro horn you may only be a few hundred dollars to step up the ladder once again. Good luck, Evan; thanks for listening and contributing here.

Actually, it should be GS. Apparently, the bell is Gold-Brass, which is an added percentage of copper to darken the tone. The S, as you mention, would refer to the 'Silver (Plating', but occasionally Yamaha fails to add the S. I only label the trumpets the way they are marked on the instrument. You are correct though, the S should have been present. It just wasn't. :)

@@Prometheushighaf James, this is a nice trumpet. It's similar, in my opinion, to the 43-- series. They're both a step up from the Yamaha 23-- series, but they're not the pro models, which are 63-- and the newer 83--. I almost never buy new; I usually buy pro horns that are used for less than the price of new beginner or mid-level horns. It's your choice; a shiny, lovely, unused mid-level or beginner horn, or a used, maybe-not-beautiful pro horn that still plays well. :) Good luck, James. And you were right on about the missing 'S' to begin our conversation. It should have been there... :)
