There are some serious faults with this table for the price. A £2250 table should NOT have such large imperfections filled in with low grade epoxy that doesn’t even try to blend in. Not only that, that is a pretty sloppy job. Looks like they just slopped it on and called it good. It should at least be a 100% seamless epoxy without rough spots, but, again, a £2225 shouldn’t have such lazy woodwork. Look at that crack at 4:17 and how that epoxy job is so messy! They used a piece of wood that should not have gone into a £2225 table, epoxied it with the worst color imaginable that highlights the mistake, and didn’t even epoxy it correctly. Just bad.. Next, the base of that table should be solid. A thin wood veneer is lazy. They could have at least made that a solid 1/4 or 1/2 inch slab. If someone bumps the bottom of that table with their knee, there’s no protection for the play area and nothing stopping the play area from bouncing, ruining any game going on there. Poor design. It should at least an insert slot in some way or have something holding the play area firmly in place. Also, the prices for those accessories are extremely over priced and kinda sloppy (as you pointed out). Those take 15 minutes to make. That’s egregious to charge $72 for a slab of wood with a bracket screwed onto it. I would expect, for that price, the mug holders should be less deep to accommodate different size cups, there should be built in coasters in them, etc. and why are there differing corners.. For the price they’re charging? Come on.. this is amateur work Look, the table seems fine and functional, but tables costing £2225 need to nail the small details. This table does not nail the details for its asking price and it just comes off as amateurish. Not to mention, the design of the table is a bit college dorm room/ikea looking. Was kinda hoping for something a bit more stylish, but that’s just personal preference.

@@garylangford6755 The table in this video is small due to the space available in their gaming area. There are all kinds of tables from tiny coffee tables to massive wargaming tables. Basically, if it exists as a normal table, you can probably buy a "gaming" version of it with a vault and topper. I hope that info helps.

I have this table over 2 years now. I’ve worked with wood in the past and this table is very nicely made. We take the leaves on and off several times a day most days to play games, eat dinner, kids do homework etc. They work really well. I can leave games setup for later without blocking the table for use by my family. I’ve spilled drinks across the table a few times and the leaves caught it and drained it out underneath the table without destroying the game setup in the table well. Crumbs do get caught in the gaps but I usually just hoover quickly along the edges of the leaves when I take them off. As regards accessories, I bought too many but am glad to have them. Most important I think would be the leaf box to store the leaves, then the counter holders which fit a coaster perfectly and we use all the time to hold our cups of tea. The mug holders are not very useful because all our cups have handles so they won’t fit in. The side tables and iPad holder come in handy now and again. Sitting down in an evening at this table to learn a new game when the house is quiet and everyone’s gone to bed is a pleasure. I would recommend getting one if you think the price is ok.

We have the Megan table but the large one. We have the extra height legs too as I'm pretty tall. We've played up to 5 player TI inside the table. Pretty crammed even on the large one. We have some of the accessories you have and some you don't. We didn't really see much practical use in the bits holder, so pro tip.. Put a coaster in it and use as a mug holder. BOOM! We love our table and use it all the time. Very happy with it.

5:39 I had the same issue with my Duchess table. I finally got a sheet of 1/4" plywood and cut it to fit as a replacement for the two half-sheets. Then I had to use a router to thin the edges to 20mm, turns out the dimensions are all in metric, a bit of a surprise for what I thought was an American company.

Nice review! A few things of note as a woodworking hobbyist: your friends' table with the 'not smooth' wood on wood connections, have you tried a coat or two of paste wax? then on the large tray accessory that had a loose bottom, conventionally drawer and tray bottoms made out of solid wood need adequate room in the dados for expansion and contraction so that's likely intentional.

I don't think I would ever buy a "gaming table" I could build one for way way cheaper. Also it's 90% just a table lol. Agree but dont. To make my own i need tools, space and knowledge. At the end of the day it would be "cheaper" for me to buy one than to go through the trouble of buying all the tools, living in a place to store and use those tools. And learning how to make it. Learning being the only part i could do almost where ever, space not as needed. That being said. If i am paying 3000 for a table i would go for one of the other ones ive seen. With lights and other things to make playing more convenient and an experience. 3000? It better cone with electricity to run through and plug in chargers, led lights for the sides, under, and out side the table. Customizable lights. I saw a self made one with a screen beneath the table to use as a map. That one would be the best. This specific table is definitely not worth it. One big thing is the cracks filled in with epoxy, ugly and definitely not for 3000. The side things are also way too much money. Wrymwood blows this out of the water for around the same price. I agree, though, if you can make your own, make your own. You can customize it to your needs and wants.

One thing I haven't heard anyone talk about in table reviews is because the accessories don't lock onto the rail, it seems to me if they're bumped you could end up with a spill. For example, suppose you're sitting at the table and you stand up and accidently bump the cup holder. Does it come loose and spill the drink all over? I've seen other tables that have a latching mechanism that seem like they'd be less prone to spillage. Oh, another common example would be dropping a game piece, you lean over to pick it up off the floor and then you're head bumps the accessory on the way back up. Anyway, thanks for the great review!
@Shelfside
@Shelfside Жыл бұрын
Good question. They are actually really secure, so I didn't have any worries about bumping drinks side to side. BUUUT, I am still concerned about the bottom coming loose and that causing spills. Head concerns are definitely valid for the side table! -Ashton

Good review and I like pointing out the quality differences. The high quality board game tables like geek n son just last way longer, look better, and the vault is more utilitarian. When I ordered a board game table from the now defunct geek chic I got one of the largest available for twilight imperium. It ended up being 7’x4’ vault dimensions. It also was marginally more expensive. When paying over 5 grand another 300-400 for the larger size was worth it. I checked out geek n son’s website and they are similar offering a 4’x6’ for marginally more so that would be the way to go if buying yourself.

I put this much into a Geek Chic table which I never received because they went belly up before we got our table. Fortunately my credit card company ponied up the refund. Ended up with a Carolina Game Tables. The first one had been I suspect hastily refinished by the delivery company which likely damaged it and the finish was trash. It bubbled and cracked in multiple places after a couple months. After voicing my concerns the company sent me a brand new table. While I could have done without the multiple trials I am pretty happy with what I got. It's our primary dining table but with enough room to keep a game set up inside it. The one big downside is it still uses the two piece topper. I Will add that CGT was superlative once I got back to them to report the finish problems. No arguments and personal response from the owners. 2 months and we had a new table which has held up for years now.

@@jimmyschwartz6186 Great, I'd say from a construction standpoint they are solid as heck compared to some of the other options out there, but at the expense of modularity. They are IMO the table option most directed at the mixed-use household who will frequently use it for everyday stuff other than board gaming. If you're looking for accessories like those highlighted in the video they don't offer anything other than fixed-position cupholders. The other 'odd' design point is that the short sides are very deep before they reach the well, meant to hold papers and books and stuff. I didn't think I'd like this but it turns out to be a good idea in actual use because you can keep reference materials and stuff out of the shared play area but easily on hand... but if someone is on the shorter side they may struggle to reach the well.

I bought a larger table a few years ago to make sure I had room for the bigger games and wargaming. I thought, foolishly, that maybe having the ability to leave games out underneath I'd play them more often. Not the case. Sadly without having a dedicated gaming room and group, it just becomes a surface to dump stuff on, which means dings and dents. Having cats means scratches on the surface. Takes up a lot of room. I wish I just got standard table size like this or saved the money and stuck with my old dining room table. I don't mean to doodoo on game tables, I do like mine despite what I just said. I suppose just to point out the obvious and make sure you really "need" and can accommodate one.

We have a guy locally that mainly builds stairs. The equipment he uses is pretty much the same as what you need for large furniture so he also does a lot of tables. I'm pretty sure he could build this table for for less than 3000 grand. Also all the accessories you can pretty much make yourself using hand tools. You just need to find an aluminium profile that fit's inside the rail. I'm guessing that the rail itself is not custom built but an off the shelf component so it should be pretty easy.

Anyone could build this table for less than three grand if you have the tools, but you need to buy the tools, pay for labor, pay for the design, pay for the wood, etc. $3000 for this table and accessories in the long run isn't that terrible, as it is only a bit more than a typical dining room table, with way more features.
@seanhollowood1151
@seanhollowood1151 Жыл бұрын
Pretty sure you are wrong about that, espescially the first table. If you work in any trade you know the setup and design takes almost as long as the build itself. Also wanna point out that the price of furniture grade lumber is not the same as home depot prices. Nice clear oak is probably around 8$ a bf, do the math and add 50% because you can't get every length everytime. Things like the legs are even more expensive. Wanna also not that you are paying for their expertise and time. Not just the actual labor, as well their shop space, all the tools they have and so on and so forth

Not really a fan The biggest point I can give it is that it does look sturdy which is a sign of good materials and joinery knowledge, kudos to the designers on that front Something I really hate about these tables are the topper lids, whether it is 2 or 6 pieces I hate how you have to move everything and have a bunch of random wood in the corner of your room while you play, the bottom plywood being one single piece is good for flatness but the fact that it is just supported in 1 direction worries me for the future Personally not a fan of that color since to me it looks like you are playing on a picnic table but that is totally subjective and there are other colors (the 6 topper design doesn't help that) For me the rail is very distracting specially in that color and similar to having the lids on a random corner while you play you also have all the accessories either laying around or needing to always have them on the rails even if you don't need just so they don't occupy gaming space, the duchess' integrated system is so much better and slick in my opinion And WOW are those mediocre accesories expensive, over 70 bucks for an extra table that is just a small plank with no other features? 7 of those slabs are worth the same as a full duchess table lol Again, structurewise the table is great.... everything else fell flat for me

The filling of those cracks and imperfections is exceptionally sloppy - it can work with darker woods and for smaller imperfections but that large crack in particular you would expect to be graded out rather than just filled. The fact that they were happy to send this out on a table which was intended to be reviewed makes you wonder if normal, paying customers would potentially be sent even worse. The topper system is visually nice, but I have concerns that there would be serious waterproofing issues along the long edges since there's no gasketed join there. The accessory rail is frankly just ugly, and the accessories are visually way too thick - especially that mug holder - and there's a lack of consistent visual style to them.

Bloody hell 3K! I built a 6x4 board game table for 1200 that’s including a track saw and a miter saw $850 for both. The rest was materials and fact felt

So tldr, no it's not. For 3k you could make 4 tables, set them on fire, and still have enough to make a 5th. Especially since, based on the measurements provided, 4 people could only use it if the game they are playing doesn't take up much space.

$3000.00 for a table that is not all that special. This video proved to me that tables are too expensive for what they are.

every time I see a boardgame table that isn't wyrmwood I'm just reminded how far behind the industry is. In price, features, accessories, fit and finish. wyrmwood just wins so easily.

@Jon G but isn't that how reviews work a lot of the time anyway? 😅 As in for example game reviewers get sent the product rather than paying for it themselves (unless you're a smaller/independent reviewer). Doesn't make it any less a valid review! Unless it clearly is biased/paid to say exactly what the company wants, which doesn't look to be the case here! Here, you hear both pros AND cons, and it has been in use for 4 months, to actually get a feeling for the product. Though I guess you could also argue ANY review is a commercial (even the ones where reviewer used their own money).

$3000 is insane for a table, what's more crazier is some people are paying that, have they lost their minds?! Stop supporting crooked business. You all should know better than that.
