As a Brit living in Mexico for 20 years.... That is most definitely an authentic Mexican street food experience. Even down to the plastic chairs. And pineapple on tacos al pastor is the way to eat them!! Chingón!!!

Tacos al pastor are technically NOT originally Mexican. This dish was introduced to Mexico by Lebanese immigrants. Thats why the pork is cooked on a vertical spit like kebab and pineapple was added, not found in regular tacos. Plus al pastor tacos have many more ingredients than in this video. So, I repeat, what you see here is NOT authentic.

Funny when you keep on saying please don't be hot when one of the defining characteristics of Mexican food when you compare it to other Latin American food is its use of Chiles and it's liberal use of chilies at that so Mexican food is hot and for you to say please don't be hot it's like going out to eat Indian food and before each bite you keep on saying please don't be spicy please don't be spicy😂😂😂

As an American in the UK I really miss good Mexican food. The pineapple is a legit component of al pastor, there was migration from Lebanon to Mexico in the early 20th century, so al pastor ("shephard style") is Lebanese kebab but made with Mexican seasoning, corn tortilla instead of pita, and pork instead of lamb as Mexico isnt sheep raising country. It can be sublime. I will give this place a try when i am next in London.

Looks like your found a real diamond there. I'm a fan of Mexican food, but generally in London, with many of the restaurants I've visited, it all tastes like it comes from the same kitchen! That looked tremendously authentic, creative, tasty and cooked with a lot of care and passion. That is the most dramatic and eye catching way to serve corn imaginable!

Glad to see you giving a Mexican a go. I found this place fascinating as I have been to Mexico a few times in the past. The table and chairs are very reminiscent of my time eating out there. The food looked tremendous and the white corn was cooked in a very unique way. I had white corn a long time ago but it was on the cob not cooked in the interesting way it was there. This will be very high on my list of restaurants to visit thanks to your channel. Decent prices as well, it seems great value for a sometimes underappreciated cuisine, I think.

Mexican food is so popular here all over The States. I've seen it's becoming the same in the UK. When I lived over there in 1999-2000 you couldn't get much at the shops but I think they had taco kits (packaged meal you put together) but they were v. expensive. We eat tacos or enchiladas or nachos in some form with brown rice at least once a week. Enjoying your videos here in New York.

This is exactly why i wanted you to taste proper authentic stuff. I had a similar experience years ago. I went to the first actually authentic Mexican place in Finland and was completely blown away, i thought texmex fajitas and that stuff was Mexican food but nope. That inspired me to visit Mexico and i have been going back many times. Yes tacos pastor in Mexico always come with pineapple, they are a match made in heaven. Salsa Verde(green salsa) is my fav sauce, the hotter the better. That place looked great and i would have gone even higher than 9. Unfortunately from now on when you go to a texmex place you will always be disappointed since you have had the good stuff now.

That looked very nice Gary, I did check the street food prices in Mexico and you can get large 3 or 4 beef/cheese tacos for roughly 80 pence all in. It's amazing isn't it the price differences between countries, take care Gary , great review, Gareth

Gary, that looks like an authentic taquería! The meats, tortillas, salsas, and toppings look like what I would want when I go to buy a Mexican lunch here in the US Southwest. The ONLY thing that looks different is the coriander/cilantro....we usually include cilantro on street corn, and as a topping in tacos/quesadillas/vampiros/mulitas, the cilantro is either the whole leaf or rough chopped. The coriander at La Chingada looks like it's been julienned.

I've never seen anything like your first course (the white corn) - stunning presentation & taste ! Your second course (steak in tortilla - no idea how to spell it's real name !!) looked very good also (pass on the chilli sauce though). The final course (again, no idea how to spell it) looked terrific in it's presentation and once more, a fabulous tasting experience. I'd not have the pineapple but that's just a personal preference of mine. Overall an incredible place & they certainly pride themselves on how a meal looks as well as it's flavours. Love the decor inside too. Top drawer Gary !!

Great review Gary. The smoky flavour you mentioned will almost certainly be Chipotle. Also, the pineapple is very common served with pork. When you think about it, we'll gladly eat roast pork with apple sauce.

Evening, a small little restaurant,lovely decor. Wall paintings are excellent and add a nice touch.The food.White corn,never ever come across that before. Presentation brilliant,a treat for the 👁‍🗨 and your reaction said the taste was good.Not so much Taco- Bell,more Taco-Belly😂😂 The whole event was fabulous and the price ( apart from the service charge 😮? Weird) is value for money. We got white corn here in the US. It tends to be a little more tender than yellow corn. We also have corn on the cob that has a mix of yellow and white kernels. I use that kind to make cream corn. Just take a sharp knife and slice the ends or tops of the kernels off, then use the back of the knife to scrape off the rest of the kernels. Save all that including the juice. Put all that you have gotten off the cob into a heat resistant glass bowl and add a lot of butter and cook in a microwave ( yes, microwave ovens are very useful for cooking the corn without burning or having it stick to the dish. Keep stirring it often. Cook until it starts to thicken and taste it until it tastes done. Add salt to taste and black pepper. I can eat the whole bowl if I was greedy. It is so good.

Food looked amazing, Gary. But one of my absolute dealbreakers in any restaurant is temperature. If they expect customers to feel comfortable and return, then turn the bloody heating up! I’d definitely try this place, but only in the summer if they insist on keeping the heating off. Restaurant owners please take note! Cheers, mate!

Al pastor has roots in Lebanese food believe it or not. It's made on a huge upright spit, with the pineapple warming on top. When I lived in Mexico City it reminded me of the kebab shops back home lol.

Had to Google it after watching your video Gary. "Do Mexicans put pineapple in tacos? Your typical taquería has a nice chunk of pineapple beside or atop the rotating spindle where they cook the marinated pork meat for al pastor tacos. While they shave the meat off the block of meat (known as trompo), taqueros cut slices of pineapple and put them in the tacos." Looked fantastic, I am a big Gammon and pineapple fan so my mouth was watering at you tucking into those tacos, will have to try pork tacos instead of chicken, great review. 👍🏼

Oh mate, I make tacos al pastor at home, with charred pineapple, we love it when it's done right with guajillo chillies, achiote paste and chipotles on adobo sauce - it's not a cheap dish to cook in the UK, but if you do it, you instantly know why - it's fkn lush 😊

We don't have the Mexican option round here but if we did I would go for it. Mexican cuisine has been championed by Tomasina Myers (Masterchef winner) for years and I have had an appetite for it for a while. If I'm in London, I will make sure I go here. Well done Gary.

Yup, pastor has pineapple in it. That's the traditional way of making it. It's in the marinade. Friend of mine is from Mexico and runs a mexican place here in town. Very authentic. Glad this place had corn tortillas.

As a Mexican food lover myself Gary, you really need to try the Mexican Kitchen restaurant, based in Wickford, Essex. I’ve been to hundreds of restaurants around the Essex area, and this one is one of the best and a personal favourite of mine. Is run by and husband and wife team, where the chef is a proper Mexican. Highly recommend you try it! Wicker’s is 37-40 minutes train rids from Liverpool Street, and then 15-20 walk from the station is the restaurant.

Hello Gary, Glad you loved the restaurant. I've traveled to Mexico many times over decades, and you food looked most authentic to me. The corn is sold like that on the streets! Looked like a pibil pork, and pineapple or mango would shine on it. And the tortillas, both flour and corn, looked perfect as if made authentically. Do you cook? If so, 2 KZbin good offerings for Mexican cuisine are Rick Bayliss's offerings (wonderful for historical and social background, ingredients explained in depth---oh, yes, recipes too!; and Rachel Cooks With Love---home cooking, no nonsense. Another great video.mexican food is one of my favourites and when in London we’re always on the lookout for a good Mexican..we usually end up in wahaka but next time there we’ll definitely give this one a go..looked amazing and I’m dying to try the corn starter.

I have never had pukka Mexican food but that looked delicious. Pineapple is great for breaking down the fats in meat. Have you thought about doing a review of African food🤔 I know it’s not easy to find in the UK but trust me you won’t be disappointed 😊👍🏾

Wow stunned I am! That’s Mexican food? Many moons ago I had a sandwich bar in Temple bar in Dublin City. I brought the staff out on our Christmas do. It was on the recommendation of my veg supplier who also supplied them. I’d never tasted Mexican food before that. It was so so disappointing and ruined our night. Well, until we went to a club and drank far too much. Ah sure we were young then 😂. Your food looked fabulous specially the corn which I never heard of. White corn? Be Jaysis?! Cracking video 👍

Gary, you have reminded me of the one and only Mexican meal I have eaten. I ate a tasty Mexinan dinner in Los Angeles 50 years ago. The following day I was ready to board a BOAC 707 to London when I had a call of nature. Well the Mexican food had bunged me up well and truly and I was in the lavatory for an eternity until I heard doors banging and a man's voice saying "Are you there Mr Rankin you are holding up the take-off!" As we hurried towards the Boeing I tried to go to the Duty Free - he told me no way. I embarked to loud cheers and later I bought four half bottles of duty free brandy from the Stewardess. As we approached Heathrow in turbulence I saw the Purser walking towards me clutching my brandy tightly to his chest with one hand and maintaining his balance with the other. As he reached me the middle brandy bottle squeezed out and went at high speed upwards before fitting the cabin ceiling. It then fell rapidly into the lap of an American sitting on the other side of the aisle. He let out a loud shriek. Whereupon the Purser handed me the three remaining bottles and then cradled the American's head in his arms. He rocked him backwards and forwards whilst soothing him with "There, there, there; I bet that's made your eyes water!" Can you imagine that happeing nowadays?

The corn is called "Choclo". It is a different plant to sweetcorn in Europe. Of course all corn comes from the New World originally.

Tacos al pastor is Taken from the arab population in Mexico. The pork is marinated in guajillo chilesand stacked on a trompo and roasted with a pineapple at the top of the trompo. The taquero will cut the meat off the trompo and add some of the pineapple to the meat and serve it on fresh corn tortillas with a little chopped onion and cilantro. Theres usually a salsa bar to the side where you can choose from several different varieties of salsas. They're my favorite kind of taco and fresh quality made Mexican food is a revelation.

Great video, Gary! Interesting to see a the UK’s take on a Mexican restaurant. One of the Mexican restaurants here where I live added a service charge to my bill the last time I went. I haven’t gone back in over 15 years!

I like Mexican food. It was quite fashionable 20 years ago but you don't see too many places these days apart from Taco Bell which just tastes weird. If there is an elegant way to eat corn, I haven't found it. That looked nice. Nice to see the cameraman getting some corn. The sauce with the quesadillas looked a bit sprightly.😂 the tacos looked delicious. Looks like an 8.5 to me as there's a service charge. Great review of a great place.

Wow what? I think you got it reversed. Mexican taquerias have taken over the United States in the last 20 years. We may very well be at PEAK MEXICAN right now. High quality CDMX trained chefs are operating acclaimed restaurants all around the United States. If anything Mexican restaurants have gone high end and expensive, which is a change from 30 years ago. Authentic-ish Mexican restaurants have never been more available in the United States.

That place looks really good, I wish it was at the end of my street! Food beautifully presented and it looked seriously delicious. Even the price was pretty good considering that it was proper quality stuff. YUM YUM!
