Mate, it’s businesses like this that give our country a bad name and the reason why tourists go away thinking British food is boring, tasteless and overpriced. This is clearly a tourist trap, with zero repeat business. This place made me feel embarrassed to be British. Absolutely shocking, and you were generous with your rating. I’d give it a 3/10. Great review as always, mate. Cheers, Gary!

Embarrassing that's what they are serving to people coming to the UK when they want to try traditional british fish and chips. The tourists will go away thinking they're very average, yet if they went to a real british chippie they would see what the fuss is about. They should be embarrassed as they're letting us down.

That is why I never go out to eat on a major holiday. Here in the states there are long waits, reservations not being honored and pre-fixe menus making for a less than great dining experience. Top that off with unhappy patrons and waitstaffs that are usually under siege and it all adds up to eating at home. Rather than eat out on Sunday my wife and I will eat out on Tuesday with friends. Happy Easter though.

Having said that last year we had what we considered to be a very good meal there at -you've guessed it - The Chip Shed. What a difference a different day can make. Some of the worst fish and chips I've had have been from "award winning" shops, the sort that you queue up for half an hour in a seaside town in summer. I think especially in touristy areas they just give up on quality to get it out the door. My local kills the award winning shops in crispness, portion size and its cheaper but the difference I think is that they rely on return customers vs just being in a busy location.

It looks from my research that The Chip Shed seems part of a small family chain of 3 or 4 stores. And of course when you have chains you start to have compromises, standardisation (which is not ideal for flavour and portions) and often the owner can only really supervise tiny bits. So not surprised it’s much of a sameness. Plus expansion means you need money to pay debt so you start to charge more to recover costs.

Wow, I’ve never seen you give a four to any place since I’ve watched you. Must have been bad! Lovely little town though. The 1940’s cafe last week was so very charming. It was, as always, a pleasure to watch😉

Yet there are towns and villages in the Cotswolds which hardly anyone goes to. Tourists all congregate in the same dozen places or so. It’s exactly the same where I live in the Peak District. Some places will be rammed whilst others are virtually empty, even on a bank holiday.

Russell's Fish & Chips in Broadway was quite nice when we visited. The Cotswolds seems incredibly expensive for food, and it's not always justified with quality.....

It wasn’t the price today just the quality

Mum told me the sides were all catering packs. Her husband used to watch the fryers while my mum used to wrap the cod and chips for the customers. Mum added a special ingredient to the reconstituted peas. A good splash of vinegar!!! The customers loved them. My mum was a perfectionist. There will have been no black spots on her chips. All prepared in house too. No catering packs@@GaryEats

Award winning my arris...did they present themselves with their own "homemade turdpile" award? Being domiciled near Whitby, my reaction to that cackamalla you bravely chowed and reviewed was a simple 2 out of 10. Absolutely everything was below par. Man cannot live by gravy and a few flakes of fish alone in exchange for £28, Gary. Bourton on the Water is beautiful but permanently busy. We took the caravan to a site in the Cotswolds last year in July, went to Bourton on the Water and even managed to get parked. Found a good cafe on one of the quieter back streets. The main drag has too many overpriced catering establishments pandering to a certain demographic. You need a medal for visiting at Easter and choosing Fish and Chips, an Easter tradition. As a nod to your recent Whitby visit, I heard there was a 2 hour wait for a table at Trenchers in Whitby on Good Friday and over a 1 hour wait for the takeaway at Trenchers. We had to wait over 1 hour and 15 minutes for a telephone order at a local chippy in Pickering on Good Friday.

Argh!! My stomping ground when I meet friends. I would've gone to The Cornish Bakery myself. Bourton-on-the-Water would have been a cheap working-class holiday destination for loads of people when it had a railway station. Even now coach loads of OAP's arrive en-masse. I personally don't think that it has managed to throw off those shackles. Despite looking very nice, it is full of cheap and tacky souvenir shops and a lot of poor food offerings. Someone recently described it as "kitsch", which I had to google. Much better in Moreton-in-Marsh and Broadway, in my humble opinion. 4/10 I felt was slightly generous because I would've felt a bit ripped-off with that food 🤨

I think you hit the nail on the head with your observation that it's a tourist hot spot. Sadly some traders are only interested in making a quick buck in such locations knowing there is little to no chance of repeat business. As always a very fair and balanced review with, given what I saw, a very generous 4/10 - I would have returned the pie! Keep up the great reviews Gary. 👍

I fell sorry for the cameraman. After you have given your opinion on each of the food items he has to now somehow eat the food knowing it is not up to par. Of course he may have his own opinion on the taste. Anyhow a hungry cameraman may not complain about being fed. So sorry the food was not up to your expectations. Part of the problem may be that the shop was too busy to keep up with the demands and did not do a proper job of cooking. P.S. At least twice a year you should take your cameraman out for a nice delicious wholesome dinner at a fancy restaurant.

Mushy peas need a splash of mint sauce to jazz them up a bit. I was going to say, put some gravy, or curry sauce on the pie, and maybe also on the chips. You did, just before I posted. The batter on the cod wrecked the meal. Your points, Gary, are spot on. A tourist trap indeed.

The main and 'only' reason bad quality food is served in both so-called lower and higher end eateries...is because not enough people hold the companies and owners accountable by shouting about it. If this was the case overall quality and customer service would be in a better state than it is.
