Yes that's a thing. The Spice Hut franchise opened a shop up local to me. I've been buying their spice box that came in a 12" pizza box for the last few years. Now it's half the size and comes in a 10" box, and the price has gone from £17.99 to £24.99. noticed a food influencer did a video last week outside their shop and the box was totally different in size and much deeper. It was packed and the presentation was excellent. Absolutely nothing like you get 😂

Gary, to fully enjoy a doner kebab please follow these simple steps. 1. Make sure you only order your meal between midnight and 3am. 2. Ensure that you have imbibed enough alcohol to knock out George Best. 3. Eat your kebab whilst sitting in a bus shelter, not forgetting to drop 50% of it on the floor. Following these steps will ensure maximum doner satisfaction 😂 👍

As a German kebab expert since about 35 years: Never go into a "restaurant" where the kebab on the stick has a smooth surface. Smooth surface means: This one is (hopefully) made from minced meat, dilluted with fat, with more chemistry inside than inside of a GSK plant, mixed with protein glue and poured into a form like concrete, afterwards shock frosted to keep its shape. And the "meat" in your bread looks exactly like that. Always go to the kebab shops where the meat ist edgy and you see the different layer. A little bit more expensive, but worth the price.

As someone of Greek-Cypriot heritage I can say I have yet to find a really nice donner in London (or gyros as we call it). From what I understand, speaking to those in the restaurant industry, a lot of them use the same suppliers. Apparently there are only a few places you can secure 40kg frozen formed meat cylinders from! The best I've had has always been made in-house, but it takes time and effort most kebab places in the UK are reluctant to expend.
@free_gold446711 ай бұрын
I've had kebabs in Cyprus and they were absolutely next level. I was staying in a place called Kissonerga near Paphos. It wasn't gyros though, it was souvlaki and sheftalia in a pitta with salad- a big squeeze of lemon all over the meat, so delicious that I'll never forget them. I have also had gyros quite a bit in Greece, smaller and wrapped in a flatbread with some chips and salad in there (and the delicious sauce whatever it is). I could eat quite a few of those delightful Greek gyros but the Cypriot kebab was more of a meal. 😄

Totally agree, my local Turkish place, their doners smell and taste like sweaty gym socks. Their other kebabs are quite reasonable. Tried that place in Stoke Newington, I forget the name, that an Evening Standard article said had the best doners in the UK, was totally unimpressed. However, for some reason, doners are always my go to after my senses have been knocked by 7 or 8 pints. The sweaty gym socks doner becomes the delicious thing in the world! 😂

Aren't all kebabs the epitome of grease anyway??? Every single time I've put a doner kebab in the fridge the next morning the meat's grease has solidified into a cakey thick white substance. A few months ago I bought two doners from here, when I got home they were pretty much the same and we didn’t eat them. So being the kind people we are, we put them in the garden for the foxes to indulge in……and amazingly the foxes didn’t eat them either!!!….

That looked disgusting, also very expensive. I have seen a couple of 'German' Kebap reviews from the UK, all being quite ugly. You've got to get it in Germany, it's very different and much much better. On the flipside, Indian food in the UK is great and everywhere, whereas it's rare to find a good curry in Germany.
@GaryEats11 ай бұрын
Completely agree with you
@Bozebo11 ай бұрын
Not sure about the Indian food (or Bangladeshi, or BIR, etc.). Really good places exist, but the majority of them are absolutely terrible. It costs like £500 of attempts to find the proper place any time you move to a new city or the good place closes down or stops being good :( Reviews are completely useless because a lot of people apparently love tomato soup with their naan and also review them on the quality of the kebabs and burgers and stuff they only reluctantly sell so parties with picky eaters can still go there.

Hi Gary, I went into the one in Sutton about 6 months ago. All I can say after my experience is that I will not be going into one again. The problems were with the staff and service rather than the food. I do not consider myself to be a "whinger" but the behaviour of the staff and the overall experience was not something I want to do again. Great video as ever, thanks.

My 1st taste of Doners was over 40yrs ago on a trip to London. Some 12yrs later, one opened in my home town. The 1st wk, the queue was unreal. Anyway, fast forward some 15 yrs later and had my 1st real kebab in Istanbul. Once you've had a real kebab, there's no going back, and it should come rolled in a "Durum", not pitta. . A heavenly thing. Also, if you venture into a proper Kebab place, can highly recommend you try an Iskander kebab. It's served on a plate, and covered in yoghurt. Divine! BTW, not keen on what they served you there! Bon Apetit!
@GaryEats11 ай бұрын
Some doners are superb but this one was shocking. Do you have any good recommendations for UK kebabs?
@sneer010111 ай бұрын
Not all kebabs in Istanbul use durum. That's just one type. There are lots of options for bread, including pita. And this is a German style version brought over by Turkish immigrants. The ones in Germany are just as good as the ones in Istanbul. They're both amazing.
@EminemDisciple111 ай бұрын
Very true. In a way I think Kebabs are like Pizza. You *think* you're eating a kebab or pizza and then you have a authentic traditional one, ideally in the country of origin, and suddenly you realise what you've been missing! People who've only ever been eating Domino's or Pizza Hut, for example, would be shocked if they were ever given a 'real' pizza in Italy! Similarly, they're use to the local 'Peckham Grill' and then try real kebab in Istanbul!

Hi Gary, sadly no, as i've been away from UK for a number of years now.@@GaryEats
@vincenzocherubini242411 ай бұрын
Hi, yes, I know, but personally prefer them in a Durum, as it doesn't detract from the filling as much as a pitta or other casings.@@sneer0101

Hi Gary, I'm with you on this. Whilst the humble 'dirty kebab' is more traditionally after club food, I've always saved some for breakfast the next day. The first time I had it in a Naan was in Belgium, and boy was that good!!! I appreciate it was served with chips, and Belgium does them the best. I've been to German Donner Kebab at all times, many times, through no other options. And at their best it's like eating those horrible boiled burgers, they skimp on the sauce, the chilli sauce is horrible, and what didn't get eaten went in the bin. No way I could do what you did, eat one sober. Thanks for doing that, it's not just me.

Interesting review! There was a GDK in Swansea when I was there at uni, and I thought it was fantastic, especially compared to your normal high street late night kebab. The bread, the toppings, selection of sauce and (what I at least thought, lol was) quality meat made it much better than your average kebab! I wonder if you say, maybe you just had a bad experience? Perhaps one day if you find yourself in Swansea you could try GDK in Uplands. If you are there as well, definitely check out Nishimura! Japanese restaurant on Catherine Street. There's also a Chinese right next door which was super authentic!

Hi Gary, You were not unduly harsh at all. GDK is a franchised chain that just takes a totally sensible dish and trots out a very pale imitation of what it ought to be like. There are way too many genuine Kebab shops out there to ever darken the doors of GDK ever again.

I like the honesty in the review, glad you don't feel pressured to pretend its good as the honesty is what we come back for. Bad food is bad food, its really as simple as that, it's not wrong to call it out, better than pretending its good, getting people to go there to only find its gross. Well reviewed, I wouldn't even of given that a 2, looked really unpleasant.
