Reviewing GERMAN DONER KEBAB - The WORST KEBAB I've Ever Had!

A trip back to German Doner Kebab. Now, I've had quite a few of you message me to say give it another go as maybe I just had an unfortunate experience and a new branch might be different so I took a trip to Borough in London to give it a go... could it be worse?

Gary, to fully enjoy a doner kebab please follow these simple steps. 1. Make sure you only order your meal between midnight and 3am. 2. Ensure that you have imbibed enough alcohol to knock out George Best. 3. Eat your kebab whilst sitting in a bus shelter, not forgetting to drop 50% of it on the floor. Following these steps will ensure maximum doner satisfaction 😂 👍

How to never eat a doner again (derived from personal experience): 1. Buy a large lamb doner with everything on, late at night after a skinful of beer. 2. Remove the wrapping and leave the doner on the bonnet of your car overnight. 3. Come back in the morning with a hangover and observe the large puddle of congealed lard.

I have been TWICE to two different GDK's - BOTH times I have eaten the kebab in ONLY a few minutes and felt the whole meal (inc chips, can and the sauces) was over priced in comparison to a REAL kebab shop! Won't ever go again... 😢😢😢

Yes that's a thing. The Spice Hut franchise opened a shop up local to me. I've been buying their spice box that came in a 12" pizza box for the last few years. Now it's half the size and comes in a 10" box, and the price has gone from £17.99 to £24.99. noticed a food influencer did a video last week outside their shop and the box was totally different in size and much deeper. It was packed and the presentation was excellent. Absolutely nothing like you get 😂

As a German kebab expert since about 35 years: Never go into a "restaurant" where the kebab on the stick has a smooth surface. Smooth surface means: This one is (hopefully) made from minced meat, dilluted with fat, with more chemistry inside than inside of a GSK plant, mixed with protein glue and poured into a form like concrete, afterwards shock frosted to keep its shape. And the "meat" in your bread looks exactly like that. Always go to the kebab shops where the meat ist edgy and you see the different layer. A little bit more expensive, but worth the price.

I know what you mean re no texture in the meat. Best doner kebab meat I have eaten is from Tas in North Cheam, Sutton in Surrey. It’s more like a roast land being carved. So flavoursome with chunks of meat.

People absolutely love GDK and I have no idea why. I can only assume they’ve never had a kebab elsewhere before. The salad has some pretty colours but that’s about it. The spring rolls are just a stupid addition - like ordering pie and mash and getting some Mini Kievs on the side

Agreed they're awful. I've been to 2 different ones and both were average at best. Small portions and expensive too. Service in Sutton Coldfield one is shocking. Reviews all mentioned "great" staff by name (clearly left by their mates at college).

People eat all sorts of crap…I mean, Nando’s is everyone’s favourite. And yes, it’s alright but nothing amazing. I had a really nice kebab the other day from Cyprus Mangal in Pimlico. Much better than this GDK place.

Being from the Middle East I have had my fair share of kebabs and Gary is right here, the level of grease looks horrendous. If it is overpowering the flavor and spices of the chicken then there is clearly something wrong.

'Taking one for the team' - That's the exact phrase I used when I ordered GDK (my sister who isn't as adventurous as me) wanted to see if it was any good and I had the same complaints as Gary - everything was just greasy! Best thing was the bread and chips!

I always go for kebabs on a skewer were the meat can be sort of recognised! I gave up on the shaved types years ago after a contractor mate of mine had to go and do some work in a place were they made them. The story he told was enough to put me off for life! Great review Gary👍

As someone of Greek-Cypriot heritage I can say I have yet to find a really nice donner in London (or gyros as we call it). From what I understand, speaking to those in the restaurant industry, a lot of them use the same suppliers. Apparently there are only a few places you can secure 40kg frozen formed meat cylinders from! The best I've had has always been made in-house, but it takes time and effort most kebab places in the UK are reluctant to expend.

I've had kebabs in Cyprus and they were absolutely next level. I was staying in a place called Kissonerga near Paphos. It wasn't gyros though, it was souvlaki and sheftalia in a pitta with salad- a big squeeze of lemon all over the meat, so delicious that I'll never forget them. I have also had gyros quite a bit in Greece, smaller and wrapped in a flatbread with some chips and salad in there (and the delicious sauce whatever it is). I could eat quite a few of those delightful Greek gyros but the Cypriot kebab was more of a meal. 😄

Totally agree, my local Turkish place, their doners smell and taste like sweaty gym socks. Their other kebabs are quite reasonable. Tried that place in Stoke Newington, I forget the name, that an Evening Standard article said had the best doners in the UK, was totally unimpressed. However, for some reason, doners are always my go to after my senses have been knocked by 7 or 8 pints. The sweaty gym socks doner becomes the delicious thing in the world! 😂

Excellent review as usual. I'm an Irish guy living in Germany so I've got a lot of experience with Döner. It really is hit or miss, a lot depends on the guy who makes the Döner... the proportion of meat ( veal in preference to chicken ) to salad to sauce. It's an art!

Aren't all kebabs the epitome of grease anyway??? Every single time I've put a doner kebab in the fridge the next morning the meat's grease has solidified into a cakey thick white substance. Looks like Pritt stick glue and probably performs just as good. Maybe that's how they get all that ' lamb ' donor ' meat ' to bond together and stay upright on that pole.

I've had one of them delivered by deliveroo . I was never sure if it was the delivery or shop at fault as it arrived cold and soggy due th the foil of the packaging. Further reviews and talking to friends seemed to give me the result that they'd had a similar experience when having then straight from the shop, I've never used them again.

I have kebabs at least twice a week from one of my local kebab houses. I love them. Your review of GDK has affirmed everything i assumed about trying to transfer this particular food to mass market. OK, so kebabs are not generally photogenic by nature, but should have the full flavour and be well prepared, which obviously none of this was. And kebab spring rolls?? What the hell is that about?? Youve saved me a trip to try this place out, with your fair and honest review. Bravo!

A few months ago I bought two doners from here, when I got home they were pretty much the same and we didn’t eat them. So being the kind people we are, we put them in the garden for the foxes to indulge in……and amazingly the foxes didn’t eat them either!!!….

As someone of German origins, I almost feel shame to see such dreadful food having the word 'German' attached to it!...The kebab looked just awful ...and the grease on the burger!.. Maybe one day you will get to Germany and try some TRADITIONAL German food! ... I hope your next video will offer up some more palatable delights! .(Let's face it , it is going to take something to do worse than this kebab!)

Gary, Another fair review. As soon as you were opening up both items, I thought that both things certainly didn't look appealing to me, and I'm pretty certain I wouldn't have persevered sampling them for as long as you did. Not one for me I'm afraid, I'll stick with my pie and mash!

GDK seems to be a hit or a miss, I've had a fair few and sometimes the bread is super soggy and othertimes its nice and toasted. The meat is always usually good in my opinion but they don't give you a lot of sauce with the kebab and it tends to all pool at the bottom of the bread.

Your reviews are always honest and fair and respect to you for that. What I’d say is the only time I’ve had GDK it was up north and reasonable. That burger though did look absolutely shocking. Kebabs can often be greasy in my experience but also don’t think they are designed to be dissected 😂 just eaten when sloshed.

That looked disgusting, also very expensive. I have seen a couple of 'German' Kebap reviews from the UK, all being quite ugly. You've got to get it in Germany, it's very different and much much better. On the flipside, Indian food in the UK is great and everywhere, whereas it's rare to find a good curry in Germany.

Not sure about the Indian food (or Bangladeshi, or BIR, etc.). Really good places exist, but the majority of them are absolutely terrible. It costs like £500 of attempts to find the proper place any time you move to a new city or the good place closes down or stops being good :( Reviews are completely useless because a lot of people apparently love tomato soup with their naan and also review them on the quality of the kebabs and burgers and stuff they only reluctantly sell so parties with picky eaters can still go there.

Gary, love your uploads mate. You are a brave man to go back to GDK. They used to be OK when they first opened but they expanded too fast and the quality control went downhill. It is horrible now

Hi Gary, You were not unduly harsh at all. GDK is a franchised chain that just takes a totally sensible dish and trots out a very pale imitation of what it ought to be like. There are way too many genuine Kebab shops out there to ever darken the doors of GDK ever again.

I spent three years working in Turkey, and I enjoyed all kinds of wonderful food there, including kebabs. The thing to know about doner kebabs is that there are two basic kinds: the one we all know from after the pub, a huge cylinder of God-knows-what, and the real thing, which the Turks call yaprak (leaf) doner. For yaprak doner , the chef builds the column with individual slices of lamb. It takes ages to do, and typically they'll do it in the morning, and carve from it all day, staying open until it's all gone. The difference is total.

I really liked GDK up until Corona struck, they were amazing and was ordering with them quite often. In the last 3 years or so, I can only agree with your review. Their waffle bread is still great, but now meat quantity decreased a lot and is truly greasy/soggy, veggies don't seem very fresh either... its a shame really, so no, you haven't been harsh at all :) fair review and great job Gary✌️

Great review as ever Gary..... sorry to hear about your experience.... in the 90's I used to LOVE Abduls Kababs in Manchester (slowly improving and taking over the City) with Abduls posing up every where...... I have no idea what the reputation is now and weather the evening demand and entertainment is like what it was in the 90's Hope you can visit any of the Abduls on Oxford St - its not Gordon Ramsey - its for students so rate on that level please and hope you enjoy!!

Hi Gary, I went into the one in Sutton about 6 months ago. All I can say after my experience is that I will not be going into one again. The problems were with the staff and service rather than the food. I do not consider myself to be a "whinger" but the behaviour of the staff and the overall experience was not something I want to do again. Great video as ever, thanks.

I like the honesty in the review, glad you don't feel pressured to pretend its good as the honesty is what we come back for. Bad food is bad food, its really as simple as that, it's not wrong to call it out, better than pretending its good, getting people to go there to only find its gross. Well reviewed, I wouldn't even of given that a 2, looked really unpleasant.

I've really been enjoying your content Gary and have just subscribed to your excellent channel. Personally, I think you might have had a better experience eating the donner the way it was supposed to be eaten rather than tasting individual parts. I think it's all about the combination. And the greasiness of the mead could have been offset with some fresh salad, bread and chilli sauce to cut though it. I eat a lot of Kebabs and would say that GDK is slightly better than your standard high street post pub kebab, but falls quite far short of traditional turkish/middle eastern places who make their own kebab/shawarma.
