This is cool. Have been on this course for a while now and have just started the Module where we get to know about R Programming. As someone from non technical background, I assume it is safe to start somewhere rather than breaking my head over which language to learn first. Since I am more inclined towards Data preparation, data cleaning, data visualisation and storytelling I would prefer taking R / Python at a slower pace. Also, am not sure if the job opportunities / support within the course cover people from India or is it majorly for people in the US? Any thoughts?

Hey, so I am in my last year at the University of Toronto majoring in Statistics (Minor in Econ and Psych as well). Do you think this certificate would be helpful in getting a job for me if I already am familiar with R, SQL, Python from my undergrad? Also, I did not build any connections in my academic career, (first two years I just went to class and went home and the last two are COVID years, and UofT are still doing mostly remote learning) how likely is it to get an entry-level job with just bachelors + this certificate without many connections and just a portfolio of some projects. Do you have any tips on how I could start building connections? Thanks in advance.

On the R vs. Python issue, two comments: 1. I am in a master's program in DS at a large, reputable university in the US. The program expects us to be proficient in both R and Python (plus SQL) and uses both in the coursework. A requirement for admission is some level of knowledge of R. 2. It's not either-or. You need to be proficient in both of them. Your competition for jobs will come from such people. 3. Right or wrong, R confers a certain respectability in some circles sure to its niche, statistics focus. In academia and social science research, it's a must. 4. R's RMarkdown and Tiny are great for showcasing and sharing your work. That alone is almost worth the price of admission.

I have completed that course back in May 2021. Before joining that course, I never heard the terms Data Analytics, Data Scientist, Data Analyst, Data Engineers, etc. IMO, Google Data Analytics is a good starting point for newbies like me. It offers a solid base for starting your data analytics journey. However, it is just the tip of the iceberg. The best advice Sundas has given is to do the "reverse engineering" (backtrack) of the role you want for yourself in the future and build your knowledge base, expertise, and skills required for that particular role.
@harikrishnanbelraj51232 жыл бұрын
Hello Saad Anwar. So you have completed the course. Did you find this course useful to start a new career as data analyst or have you taken this course as knowledge addition. Your reply will be helpful for me coz I am planning to start a new career as data analyst through this course.
@OwnYourZaaviya2 жыл бұрын
@@harikrishnanbelraj5123 NOTE: LONG ANSWER AHEAD! Hi Hari! I hope you will be doing fine. Before answering that, I would like to add some info about my professional background. This will help you understand the bigger picture. I am a computer science graduate, never liked programming back in my university days, which is in 2003. Unfortunately, back then there were not many great resources online or offline available to teach coding in a simple and fun way. So, started my career in the digital marketing domain back in 2007. I have 15+ years of experience in the digital marketing industry. However, I felt unsatisfied with my professional and intellectual growth. Looking for ways to improve my skillsets and expertise. I tried Codecademy to learn HTML, CSS, and javascript, completed the course but failed miserably to find an entry-level job or freelance work related to those skillsets. So, I left that as it is. Then I tried my hand in different computer programming languages, C, C#, Java, but unfortunately never mastered any of those. Last year, I lost my job during the COVID19 lockdown and I was feeling down and depressed. I found this course through a friend’s newsfeed. Data Analytics was new to me, as I have discussed earlier. However, after finishing the course, I realized that I have been doing a lot of basic data analysis without knowing it. For example, when I analyze data offered by Google Analytics to find ways to improve a website’s organic/paid traffic I was doing a sort of data analysis. As Dave Langer, a very astute data scientist KZbinr said, you will be doing a lot of KPI analysis for the business you are working for. In summary, if you are a fresh graduate, go for this course, this will add value to your resume to get an entry-level job as a data analyst. If you are an experienced professional, still go for the course, it will conceptually clear a lot of things about data analytics and data science and all possible career pathways. If you are planning to switch your career after completing this course, and you are at a very early stage of a career path, then please do so, but keep in mind that this is just the beginning of a life-long learning journey. If you are an experienced professional, this course will complement your already existing expertise and skillset very well, but be careful and considerate before making a full career switch to become a data analyst, data scientist, or data engineer, especially if you don’t have a computer science background. The learning curve is steep and requires mastering different tools and techniques. Microsoft Excel, SQL, R, and Python. Also improve your basic mathematics like calculus, linear algebra, and statistics. In my understanding, having a very good grip of Statistical concepts will help you a lot. You can always learn to write code in any language, but you should exactly know what kind of “analysis” you are performing on your data to answer a business query. At the end of the day, it is always a CEO, COO, CFO, Marketing Manager, Marketing Director, OR Product Manager, who wants answers to his/her queries about a certain business problem. I may have oversimplified it because of my inexperience, but this is what I have learned so far. I would love to hear from other people what they think of my assessment of data science.

I'm currently doing this certificate, but I am having a hard time staying motivated. It gets really old listening to them repeat over and over their experiences with data analytics. I honestly don't care at this point. There should be a section just for those types of videos. It feels like wasted time when I am trying to learn skills. Also, most of the questions just seem like common sense. The only time I've had really issues is when I needed to understand terms I wasn't familiar with, but those were easily remedied. Also, may of the course questions are "Come up with an idea for a problem and try to solve it." I doubt very much someone is going to give me a data set, tell me there is a problem I need to solve, but they aren't going to tell me what it is. I understand the SOW, but coming up with some imaginary problem was annoying. Creating random things to add to and SOW for an imaginary problem was incredibly annoying. Overall. I like the hands on stuff where I am working with a data set, I even like the questioning and writing (when we aren't told to just make something up). Yes, I can make something up, but I don't want to. I want experience with someone giving me a problem with something I probably know nothing about and then being told to come up with an SOW to a given problem. Also, learning logs are incredibly annoying. I'm never going to go back and look at them. If I need to remember something I'll look at my notes. I'll know how far I've come by how comfortable I become working with data, not by digging through old files from when I knew nothing about data analysis.

There are several different googles certificate programs that boast getting good paying tech certificates that will help open doors to these jobs, but where are all the job openings for people with these certificates listed that have no prior degree in a related field? It doesn't matter if you can do it if you can't get employed after. Does google also offer, or can they, a place where they list available positions to those that have just the certificates they got training thru them? In most other places, these certificates alone, and a portfolio, are not enough to land a job.

A general topic that you ought to cover is the value of these moocs and nearly free online courses vs. the time and $$ investment of a master's degree. This is for two reasons. One, labor surveys indicate that employers are requiring degrees even for jobs and tasks that don't need it. It's all there in the labor stats, in the data. This means that the barrier to entry is getting higher and higher. Two, surveys of the DS field in the US reveal that most data scientists have at least a bachelor's and a good third have at least a masters in a related field. Three, the few companies not requiring degrees and focusing exclusively on skills are a miniscule minority. Most jobs, most companies still require degrees. Plus the best jobs will always tend to go to those with degrees. There are no shortcuts and free lunches, I am afraid.

Aoa sundas I hv a question I m going to start data analyst course I hv no IT background. If we can data analysis through pivot table so we can skip python?

There is a certain scale of data where spreadsheets cease to be a practical tool. You will also want to do data exploration and cleaning that are much more easily managed in a programming language than Excel. Code has another real important benefit, it's built in documentation. When you work with and transform data you need to record and be able to communicate EXACTLY what you did, that gets very fuzzy with spreadsheets. But if you did it in code, everyone can inspect your process and repeat your analysis (you'll also be able to rerun the code to automatically update your analysis without any additional work!). But back to the practicality. Just try and manipulate a spreadsheet with a couple million rows...it's going to crawl, crash, or some unknown failure mode. With python or R you will be able to do processing routines in less than a second after you hit enter in your notebook. Also eventually maybe you'll want to apply some advanced modeling (maybe a neural net classification), that's not going to be in reach for Excel but will be a minor extention of your R or Python toolkit. Then there's another pragmatic consideration, your data source isn't going to be a spreadsheet. Most likely you'll be pulling it out of a database, so you're going to need SQL. You can pull from SQL into CSV or Excel, for small and simple cases. But lets say you need to merge large data from several databases...it's going to be a bad spreadsheet day with some very error prone copy and paste ninja work. You can directly load your query results into data structures in Python and freely manipulate and splice them together (and then even export to Excel if something would be convenient there). There's also the final consideration, if you have an analysis or modeling process that needs to be integrated into a software solution, a spreadsheet is worthless. The devs are basically starting from scratch. If you've got code (and Python can be glued in practically anywhere) half the battle is already done. Spreadsheet's have their place but coding approaches exist to make your life easier.
