As a bartender myself, the biggest issue for me with the cocktail machine is having to buy the liquor (gin/vodka/etc) and the pods in addition to the machine at £300. Like... you’re shelling out probably £500+ just to get the thing ready to use, let alone to replace the liquors and pods as you use them

Also those pods are just a scam. Think about an Old-Fashioned. You have to supply the bourbon yourself. So it's a £2-3 pod for... a bit of sugar, and a couple dashes of bitters? That wouldn't even cost you 50 cents. I doubt it'd even cost you 25 cents. But now you need to pay £2-3 for a pod and a £300 machine to stick it in. On top of that you can't play around with different types/flavours of bitters or the amount of bitters. And then in the end the result is only "passable" and not as good as a handmade cocktail. 🤷🏻‍♀️ (Not even touching on the fact that it creates plastic waste with every cocktail.)
@dowfreak7
@dowfreak7 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheMrVengeance Also it doesn't really fit anyone. Those who like mixing drinks as a hobby, will have no need for this. Those who occasionally mix some drinks, like on New Year's, don't need it. And even in the scenario of "I wanna do multiple drinks for a big party in one night, without having to do it myself", you don't need it. At that point just hire a bartender. That'll supply you for the night, provide a little bit of spectacle and it'll probably be cheaper than the machine.

The last gadget I have a slight problem with. It doesn't ALLOW you to do anything. All it does is remove the necessity to measure ingredients. You still have to procure the liquor, you still need ice, you still need a strainer, you still need any garnishes, and unless I'm mistaken the cost of a dozen or so of those pods for old fashions is likely equal to or greater than getting yourself a bottle of bitters and a jar of cherries

My understanding is that there is a real convenience to being able to switch from 1 drink to another without having to clean out drinkware and minimizing the number of ingredients required. If you are hosting a gettogether with friends, this is a way to have a wide variety of cocktails without someone becoming a full time bartender. Pods can be annoying and wasteful, but this also not juicero.
@erinodonnell386
@erinodonnell386 3 жыл бұрын
The thing with the cocktail maker is that, as a former bartender, when you are someone who makes a lot of cocktails you realize that the bulk of them use the same ingredients main with different flourishes and in slightly different proportions. Personally, I would just buy ingredients for the cocktails I happen to like over time as I feel like making them, then the majority of them keep for a really long time. If I was having a cocktail party, personally, I’d love to infuse a thing of liquor or make my own flavored syrup ahead (it’s not hard nor is it expensive) to make something really special for my guests that actually wasn’t that big of a deal for me to put together.
@mattgopack7395
@mattgopack7395 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, part of the fun of a cocktail party is in actually making the cocktails IMO. But I'm not a bartender, so it's more like a fun thing every once in a while rather than doing work stuff at home. Alternatively for non-cocktail parties, sometimes I've just mixed up a bigger batch (like bottle sized) and just put the bottle out with pre-mixed cocktails. Not as showy, but it at least is convenient.
@erinodonnell386
@erinodonnell386 3 жыл бұрын
@@mattgopack7395 Just making a pitcher of cocktails is a great idea depending on the size of the party. I do find though that with things where the natural oil or essence from the ingredient is the primary flavor component (a traditional old fashioned or a mint julep for example) it's better to make them immediately prior to serving. Or show your guests how to make them themselves, which can also be quite fun. Bloody mary's make a particularly good pitcher party cocktail and if you infuse the vodka itself with fresh tomatoes you can get a really great flavor and aroma because some flavor compounds dissolve better in water and some dissolve better in alcohol (like dissolves like, polar vs nonpolar compounds). Takes a few days of waiting but doesn't take much work.

I’m learning how to create my own simple syrups and mixers. It is SO damn fun. As someone just getting into cocktails and building my bar, I would never buy this gadget. The fun is learning how to mix! And while some recipes might be a bit time consuming, sure, most of the ones I’ve been going for take less than five minutes. Definitely not worth the price tag. I’ll invest that in my booze instead 😝

I think if you are not any good at making cocktails yourself but often have dinner parties than this might be a novel gadget to entertain your guests. However I don't know how many drinks it will make in one pre-load, so I'm not sure how many guests it would cater for.
@erinodonnell386
@erinodonnell386 3 жыл бұрын
@@VixeyTeh Its very very simple to make a wide variety of different cocktails. Get yourself a jigger, a cocktail shaker, a bottle of booze and a couple mix ins and you're good to go. My argument is that it's a lot of money for something that is, ultimately, not that difficult and not that complicated unless you want to make it so. You can buy a decent cocktail making set for $50 tops and bottles of booze for however much you care to spend. This thing and the cartridges that go with it just seems very very pricey for what it is. Fundamentally I suppose that it's the same issue I have with a lot of these electronic gadgets, you're taking a simple thing and making it way more complicated than it needs to be.

@@xSintex Yes. In a jug. about same outcome as this machine at a fraction of the price. Also not really clear how the machine varies from premade cocktail mixes form the likes of Funkin Cocktails that provide the mix in a carton, which is probably a lot faster to pour and a lot cheaper than this machine can run. Especially for the high capacity you were trying to put forward. Honestly the cartridges also look kind of cheap. But IRL it all comes down to if they are any good. Advantages they might have like onboard cooling of water to potentially serve things like no ice super chilled drinks would be actually new and innovative. It's a simple way to scam people into being forced to keep buying things, instead of just paying a one-time fee of a big thing, you now provide a "service" in the form of those capsules, which generates some constant income. Though, with it being this simple, you can be sure as shit that this machine has had its code cracked wide open, the barcodes easily deciphered and I'm pretty sure if I were to search up ways to make my own pods, I could do that.

As a tip for the smoking gun - if you actually want to infuse something, especially something thick like cream, you want to put your smoke in and seal it, once it is sealed let the smoke dissipate completely - depending on how much of the smoke flavour you want in your infusion you can repeat 2/3/4 times - but it's important to seal in the smoke and allow to dissipate on it's own, otherwise you are just losing all the flavour to the air! Enjoy playing around with it - haven't used a smoke gun in years (tobacco smoked honey is the best thing I ever created with a smoke gun!)

@TheMrVengeance
@TheMrVengeance 3 жыл бұрын
@@owlec5142 Plastic recycling is a scam, the majority of plastic that claims to be recyclable isn't. Because while it's "technically" *_able_* to be recycled, it's not financially viable to do so compared to making new plastic. So no one does it, and it ends up in landfill and the ocean regardless. On top of that each pod costs more than the ingredients would cost on their own, and then there's still the £300 on top of it for the machine. Giant waste-creating scam just so you don't have to measure out a bit of liquor.
@NekoApril
@NekoApril 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheMrVengeance Not to mention, most recycling plants won't take anything with food waste on it (same reason you can't recycle pizza boxes), so you potentially would also be making many things that could actually be recycled non-recyclable. And either way, recycling plastic is not an energy light process (though significantly better than things like iron and aluminum) so it's generally better to avoid single-use plastics (heavier duty plastics like what you see totes made out of and are used for things that are used a lot are generally fine though environmentally).

My family have ine of those mandolins (only way bigger, you can put more than half a cabbage in it) and we use it every year to make fermented cabbage ( sorry if it's not the right term, English isn't my first language) we basically use it once a year to make whole barrel of fermented cabbage that don't go bad just getting stronger( in the spring (and summer if it last long enough) you have to rinse it before use) ETA: fermented cabbage seasoned with salt and pepper is one of the best salads you can serve with main dish

I got a bartesian for my family as a christmas present last year and it has definitely been a hit! Everyone loves it and my parent's friends come round just to see it in action. My only criticism is that sometimes the drinks can verge on being a bit too bitter/sour, but that's easily adjusted with the strength setting.

If I were willing to miss it for a few weeks, I'd lend you guys my new 'seventeen different functions and a light show' rice cooker (Sorry, the Reishunger 1.5 liter digital PREMIUM rice cooker) and see what happens. Mostly because I have managed to make exactly three functions work, and one of them is the 'keep warm' that springs on automatically. Partially because I want to see James get really really upset over how much space can be taken up by a thing that is mostly there to do rice. Also, several of the normals might be into the space-shippiness of it all.

Cabbage Slicer... When I was a child, my mom used to make Sauerkraut every year, in one massive barrel, that would last the year. We needed to help to make that stuff then. The cabbage slicer was quite a bit bigger then that thing. You were able to fit 2-3 half cabbages in there, which was quite neccessary, if you were to slice up 50+++ cabbages at once.

Only the smoking gun caught my eye, though I just got my new pampered chef mandolin - OMG! I love this thing so much - its not a traditional design because you move the blade rather than the food and its SO much safer! It has a chute you put the food in, and I guess a plunger is the best word for it (?) that you unlock and extend to push back down and that moves the blade to cut the food in the chute, of course there is a guard/pusher for the chute so everything gets cut even.
