Absolutely no problem with running up the score in a playoffs series. You don't want the opponent to gain any kind of momentum for the next game. Very easy to defend the coach's decision. Plus they were securing a shutout for their goalie.

The bigger lesson was from last year against Vegas. Last year's Knights were on the same level as the Lightning and Avs, and the Colorado-Vegas series was predicted to go to 7 with the home team winning each game. And that's the way things were playing out up to game 5 where the Avs were up by one, but took their foot off the gas and Knights tied it in the closing minutes. Avs were stunned and went on to lose in OT. That minor lapse in effort at the end of the game is what ultimately cost them the series.

I've always said in professional sports you should ALWAYS run up the score. You don't do it in high school games for the same reason you SHOULD do it at the pro level, especially in a series. Good analysis-I agree Cogliano should've been a star, but even though he had to do almost nothing,if the goalie gets a playoff shutout-its almost guaranteed he gets a star- deserved or not. But I honestly can't believe what I just watched,as Colorado fan. I thought Tampa would win game 2-but I'm not shocked at all we won-but like that? Most dominant single game performance I've seen-considering the stakes,& especially the opponent. We beat Florida, like 8-2 in 1996 Finals, game 2. (Forsberg a hat trick)But that was a massively overachieving Florida-that pulled 3 upsets,& rode their goalie to the Finals...kinda like Montreal last year. Florida was massively overmatched, like Montreal,& WCFs vs Detroit was the defacto Cup Final. (Lemiux hit on Draper)This is against a dynasty...2 time Champs,4 Finals,& 6 ECFs in 8 years. Roster stocked full of HOFers,& mentally tough,& super talented Champions. Only thing similar is 2002 Red Wings beating my defending Champ Avs 7-0 in game 7,of WCFs...the defacto Cup Finals that season also. But that Detroit team is best team I've ever seen, since I started closely following the NHL in 1995.-like double digit future HOFers. Now,I do not believe this is close to over. Tampa has too much pride, experience, resilence & talent..We might be seeing them finally run out of gas after so much hockey-like that '02 Av team did. They had played in 4 straight,& 6 of 7 WCFs,(& 2 Cups)-very similar to Tampa now-except TB had to deal with shortened COVID offseasons. But I never would write off the Champs,& still think Tampa probably wins game 3 somehow. But worst case, best of 3,& we have home ice...where we are now 65-12-6,last 2 years-if my math is right. Yes,the Avs get most the credit-the crowd a bit,but altitude is a scientific proven advantage,to all the doubters. No guarantee,& it doesn't make up for lack of talent/execution-but is a REAL advantage. Only thing up for debate,is how big of an advantage it really is. Id be ecstatic if we split in Tampa,& have a shot to win the Cup Friday at Ball in game 5. Good chance Kadri comes back in game 3 or 4. But Tampa has some serious issues to fix, before they can even think of getting back to Denver. My Avs basically played the perfect game.
