A 7.8 is DEFINITELY within the range of the "Pitchfork Great Indie Rap Album Score", which is anywhere from 7.3-8.1... so you're on the high-end of that at least lol

Yeah this is excellent score for any artist on pitchfork They really don't hand out 9s unless you're doing something very special both in production and social impact (pitchfork is the hipster test so ignoring trendiness is sacrimonious)

i feel like a lot of pitchfork reviews wind up reviewing the artist, not the album. I bet if your next project explodes onto the mainstream theyll start giving you 9s bc thats just how pitchfork reviews shit. kinda sad tbh bc you have like 3 or 4 9s imo

Really enjoy the new album. Very excited to have ordered the anniversary vinyl release of Dark Comedy as well. I was literally on eBay shopping for a used copy but didn’t buy one and then the next day I got the message about the anniversary edition pre-order. Sometimes stars do align!

It's kind of wild how different the industry is, and how much the role of a site like Pitchfork has changed, just since Dark Comedy and Brick Body Kids. It's even crazier to think about how tastes and consumption has changed as this corner of hip hop ages and the art continues to evolve and mature, even further away from what's popular. It's still fresh and new, nice when Pitchfork and others notice from time to time

The genre of independent rap just gets that score from them. Did a quick google of other artists in your genre like Billy Woods, Aesop Rock, Quelle Chris etc. and they all get pretty much the exact same scores for their albums. Almost everything hovers around the 7.7-8.2 margin.

Glad someone mentioned The Jeff Rosenstock Effect . If you look at all Jeff's Pitchfork reviews, they all have super high praise, yet all land between 7 and 8. Some have suggested it's because they're emo adjacent, but it's very weird. Highly recommend all the BTMI and Rosenstock solo records.

Pitchfork gives almost everything between a 6.4 and 8.3 nowadays but 7.8 is a v high score for them.

Pitchfork once reviewed a Rilo Kiley album in the form of a screenplay. They were lukewarm on it if I remember right. They are beyond self parody sometimes, and while this term is overused, I physically cringe reading some of their articles. I still find myself going straight to their website though every time new music drops that I'm interested in.
