Reviewing the YORKSHIRE PUDDING MEAL in YORK. My LOWEST SCORE so far!

Today, I've decided to go to the York Roast Company as I love my Yorkshire puddings and I've had a few recommendations to go down there and give it a try... but I was surprised by the quality of food.

I’ve seen this place on different programmes and always wanted to go there. But listening to Gary I don’t think I’d bother. Tourists must be very disappointed if they waste their money going there.

​@paul_raftery 500g of beef sainsburies (6 quid), bag of potatoes can get for 1.25, 4 eggs for a massive yorky or a few smaller ones (say 1.25). 1.50 left for a couple carrots/veg of choice, use the juice from the beef to make a gravy and your sorted. Use a bit of flour and milk from pantry or add another 50p for that expense a guess

Wow eating out of a box and using plastic utensils, even if it was the best roast dinner ever I wouldn't return....that's just cost cutting at the expense of the dining experience. You were generous Gary.

if you are sitting in then you should have it on a plate with real knife and fork, even a place that looks like a dump give you this. bet it does not cost them more than £1.50 for what's in the box. its not worth even if it tasted right more than £6 tops

We where going in there , when a woman said "do'nt go in there ,follow me " I do not know where she took us but the food was top 10/10 no stupid plastic or wooden tools , I'm just glad you went in and showed us what we missed . Thank you Arthur

You have been completely honest and correctly downgraded this pub, which quite frankly the plastic knives and forks, cardboard box and poor service before the taste test even began were ominous. So glad you will be showing poor reviews too as this honesty really helps the community when looking where to eat. To be honest I think it’s rarely worth ordering a roast dinner in a restaurant. It’s such an easy meal to make at home , and you can get everything just as you want. It’s hard to mass cook roasts to a decent standard in a restaurant.

l stayed at a motel in napier nz that had a small restaurant, run by the owners, an elderly couple, you had hardly any choices, i ordered the roast lamb and my wife ordered fish and chips. my mum cooked the best roast lamb ever until l ate here and even my wife said it was the best fish and chip meal she had ever had. l judge an eating place on how good they cook a roast, or a steak dianne, my 2 favourite meals. l am not into seafood and no one beats kfc for chicken if you get it freshly cooked

It is an easy meal to make at home, but it's time consuming - especially if you're single or just a couple. I have to disagree with you about mass cooking to a decent standard. It really isn't THAT hard, even for a moderately skilled chef. Look at Gary's review of Toby Carvery as an example.

Firstly using such poor cutlery such a let down,eating out a box in a restaurant is a non go. Basically looks like a microwave roast dinner. Does not look like you had a good experience Gary but at even £10-50 you can still get a decent carvery dinner anywhere in Britain. This is not one of them. Great review Gary👍

​@@GaryEatsbit late to this video but if it helps it was no surprise the beef was tough and bland because it wasn't topside or silverside the two traditional hind quarter premium roasting cuts...it was what we in the trade refer to by various names...pallis rib sometimes but is actually thick rib above the shoulder off the fore quarter...an extremely hard working muscle which is best pot roasted. The plate of gristle running right through it immediately gives the game away. It's been used as a cost cutter. And it's been sliced incorrectly adding to the toughness. Brilliant channel by the way.

As a 20 year resident of York, the locals stay away from the York Roast Co. We know it's a tourist trap and the food is crap. If you go a minute further down that street, Goodramgate, you find so many unique and delicious places to eat.

Been there, and we left extremely disappointed. It was absolutely not up to snuff. The Yorkshire pudding wasn't too bad, but had much better in Leeds. Another great and honest review, Gary.. Hi Gary, My wife and I went to the same place 3 years ago, and sat where you were, and at the time it was very busy and we had a delicious pork and crackling and gravy sandwich, and Yes it was lovely! But I have to say watching you last night, we both said that the food did not look that great to start with , and the knife and fork, 'what the heck' ..how can they give you those plastic/wooden cutlery anyway trying to cut the meat..and also in a cardboard box! I actually said this is going to be a 4 or 4and a half, and to be fair, we both agreed with you. Its a shame, as its such a fantastic place in York, and where you ate probably had great reviews, so , it was really disappointing for you. I’ve had a few wraps there in the past few years and enjoyed those. First time I was out drinking while in York staying for a few days at an army base and remember going back in 10 mins after I demolished the first one to get a second. That was probably the drink enhancing the vibe 😂. The box thing does look a bit crap though.

Those " Giant Yorkshire puddings" are currently 2 for 80p in Heron foods. The roast potatoes are a common humble vegetable available for "ten a penny." The other accompaniments aren't worth mentioning. The roast beef was the most expensive element of the whole meal, and the portion you were given would not equate to even close to £2 in money. I'm sorry to break it to you, my friend, but you have been royally shafted, without the common courtesy of vaseline. I appreciate your reviews. You're good at what you do. Thank you for the upload 😀

We were up in York in July, looking in the window. An old boy came up to us and identifed himeself as local, when he realised that we were English, he said dont bother, its for the Tourist. We took his advice. Bish bash bosh, stack em high etc. The pots were not roasted , boiled , then cold, then into a deep pan fryer, just saying. 4.5 . The wooded tools reflect the taste of the meal me thinks.

We've been really enjoying your reviews. We don't get to London much so good to see you getting out and about. I didn't think that meal looked very good and thought when I saw it that the beef was going to be chewy. Why? It was silverside, which has that signature seam of connective tissue through it, shown up perfectly by the camera. That cut is always tough, it's not a roasting cut. Keep up the good work, we love how you tell it like it is without any clickbait nonsense.

You should always check their star rating to see if it is correct. I have checked all the pizza shops in my local area, all 12 of them, they all claim 5 stars yet not one of them are registered proving they lie and the local council doesn't check.

Excellent fair appraisal of what was a below average meal that showed you cannot present and serve this meal in a box with inadequate cutlery. I believe that a Roast meal should be served on a plate and not in a box.

We went there a number of years ago, and from the outside it looks fine. Alarm bells started ringing when our meals turned up in boxes. The meal was far from what I was expecting, and I would never go again. The worst was the actual Yorkie Puds. Ours were soggy and just tasted of eggs.... I love eggs, but if I want the taste of eggs I will eat an omelette, or for that matter, eggs. Like other tourists, we were conned.

Roast dinner in a box, eating in??? As soon as you opened the lid I knew this was going to be a bad meal. Gravy spilling onto the box, plastic knife and bamboo fork, beef looked grey and the roasties had no colour! Fair enough to serve in a box with that cutlery if it was takeaway but not to eat in!!! Only saving grace was the Yorkshire pud. Fair score, Gary, but it would have been a three from me.

Visually,it ticked the boxes And it just wasn’t what it said it was. Tough meat,dry potatoes and stuffing- that’s the essence. I would be very disappointed by this- after all they obviously spent good money on the outside to draw the customer in. Short staff ok- but it should not affect quality- The takeaway box and cutlery- no need inside sitting down.not in a place like this. We were there just a few weeks back, over visiting from Canada. My son wanted to try the Yorkshire pudding wrap with roast pork. He asked if he could have some pork crackling with it and was told no. Asked why the guy serving him said he was instructed by management not to sell any. We protested that being lured into the shop with the display of pork c/w crackling and not being able to buy any didn't make any sense. Anyway they were firm so my son had his wrap without crackling. He said it tasted ok though.

Never having eaten a roast dinner out of a box with plastic cutlery I do not intend to start now, thanks for taking this one 'for the team'. Looking at the meat I would suggest each joint was all mechanically retrieved meat moulded into a shape that resembled a joint. If a place where you buy a meal does not serve the food on a plate, my guess would be the kitchen is a row of freezers and a row of microwaves - so not much need for a sink. I would have given it 1/10.

I think your score of 4.5/10 was fair and accurate. It did not look appetising and with all the other issues you mentioned, it was not worth the price. Funnily enough, another famous KZbinr reviewed this place 2 years ago and gave it a 9/10, so either he was overly generous or things have just gone downhill since then.

Great video, this popped up in my recommendations and it's good to see someone giving places an honest review on KZbin! I ordered the same thing as you when I went in the summer and it was mostly dry and tasteless. It tasted like it was cooked from frozen and left under heat lamps for a few hours. The place was swarming with flies too, and the service was all over the place. Definitely a tourist trap.

FINALLY!! I see a lot of reviews of this place & you're the first to have my experience - crap & bland, I actually had the wrap version of this at the other shop down the road. What I will say, you did actually miss their one good item, you can have a tub of their crackling, which was basically warm pork scratchings on salty steroids. Very interesting. I first tried this place about 25 years ago. It was amazing. But, back then, all that was on offer were basically, hot carved meat rolls with sauces etc. We used to love it on our yearly trip to York. People used to queue down the road for it. But, as the years have gone by, the company has expanded, the range on offer has expanded, but the quality has gone way down as the prices have gone way up. Really sad in the last couple of years when we reached the conclusion it just wasn't worth bothering. The classic phrase of being a victim of their own early success is never more true than here. Evening Gary Please comment on the temperature of the meals as your beef dinner looked cold. I do not like cold dinners. Glad the Yorkie was nice, shame potatoes were dry. Too much gravy for my liking too but thats me! Like you said plastic cutlery bit difficult to use with a roast dinner. Gary, I think it looked really bad mate, admittedly I am a slightly fussy eater, the beef I couldn't have eaten any of, the Yorkshire pudding looked like one of the frozen ones Iceland sells currently, the potatoes didn't seem to be cooked properly, possibly the heat or cooking oil?? The price was over priced, the cutlery was an absolute joke & as for eating out of a cardboard box?? Other than that, it was ok! 😂😂 My score is no more than 2 seriously! During my last visit to "Gods Own" staying in York I was craving a good Yorkshire Pud on a Sunday. After not getting into a couple of pubs, and finding the Hole in The Wall had sold out we wandered past this place....luckily they were shutting so I was saved this disappointment. As someone else said, it's a tourist trap which does nothing to enhance the world view of English food> Another great and honest review Gary...and another from Yorkshire ...we'll make you an honorary Tyke at this rate.

I think you were generous with the scoring. Serving in a cardboard box with fake cutlery would have been enough to have seen me leave on the spot. Perhaps trying to save on staffing by negating the need to was the plates up. Do not like gimmicks such as serving the food inside the Yorkshire pudding. To me it's indicative of someone trying to distract from the inadequacies the food itself. Hopefully this was just a one off poor performance, although I doubt it. The establishment needs to raise its game if this was anything to go by. Score 2.5/10.

Looking at this company, it seems the director started all this in 2015 with various hog related companies after working in radio. All the traditional look and feel seems to be a bit of smoke and mirrors to create a traditional vibe to get the tourists in. Maybe the guy had a wealth of experience in making this sort of food and it's his passion, but it could also just be a business venture. In terms of the food, based on the ambience you'd expect something hearty and homemade. I expect the potatoes just happen to look like they came from Aunt Bessy but it's unfortunate either way - roasties should be craggled and crispy and glassy and soft on the inside. The fact that they're needlessly contributing to the plastic waste in the world because they apparently don't want the hassle of washing any dishes just makes it all the worse. This is the sort of meal you'd expect to spend a tenner on at Glastonbury festival, not sat down in a restaurant.

I went there July 2024, with my family of 6. Although technically we were tourists, I had lived in the UK for decades and my children had spent a few years at uni in the UK so we weren't clueless about British food. Even though it was a grey rainy day, the place was packed with queue stretching out to the street. We expected a long wait, but not at all the queue moved fast, so they seemed well staffed and well organised. Yes the knives and forks were stupid, but the food wasn't bad, we all enjoyed our meals. Another "tourist trap" place in York with long queues is Betty's. We tried that and you know what, we loved the desserts they were serving up.

Another good review - well filmed and good commentary. Beef should be served on a big hot plate and eaten with good cutlery. You asked for suggestions for when you go to Leeds and district. How about Afternoon Tea in the famous Bettys Tearooms in nearby Harrogate? You should enjoy that washed down with Yorkshire Gold Tea! Keep up the good work, Philip!

It all started for Bettys in Harrogate over 100 years ago by a Swiss - there is a good history on their website. When I lived in Harrogate years ago people loved their teas in Bettys. I lived in Yorkshire for three years and loved it. My sons were born and raised by my ex wife, in Yorkshire. I love North Yorkshire and frequently visited. That meal was a disaster, served in a cardboard carton with plastic cutlery. Nil points pour moi! My favourite lunchtime meal was at the Tan Hill Inn: the highest pub in the British Isles, on the Pennine Way. When Tracy owned it, you might get sheep and ducks wandering around in the bar, but the giant Yorkshire Pudding contained a coiled chipolata, mashed potato, swede, carrot, peas and onions, and lashings of gravy. Not haute cuisine but very nourishing, 1720ft plus, up, especially during winter. All washed down with Blacksheep Ewes Juice. If you didn't need to go any place else that day, you could book a room and just enjoy, with lunacy thrown in. Look it up. Scenes in Vera were shot there, as was Ted Moult's double glazing ads. One of my favorite places.

Not sure whether it was because the title told me it was going to be be bad; but when I saw all the food in the window and the place is empty; I wasn't expecting it to be great. The amount of meat and stuffing balls was more than you see at a Toby Carvery where you're expecting it to be busy. Sitting in and eating out of a takeaway cake box, didn't make me want to jump in the car and rush there either.

Hi Gary. Another very honest review. I think I speak for most English people when I say that places exploiting Englishness to rip off tourists are a disgrace. The potatoes have been deep fried not roasted. Typical mass catering shortcut. I laughed when I watched your face when you chewed the beef. Cutlery is a disgrace. They can do better. Real Yorkshire pudding is best a s a big piece cut from a tray. In my family we had our Yorkshire pudding separately before the rest of the meal with gravy as a grown up and maybe with jam as a kid. It was a throwback to the days when Yorkshire pudding was used as a filler so you didn't need too much meat. A lot of the places you have reviewed have been so impressive but this place was poor. And expensive. I would give 3 out of 10. 10 out of 10 for the review though Gary. Keep going mate.

As a resident who lives in the centre of York I've had exactly the same experience. Been there twice and won't go back. Interestingly when you mentioned about the service it's like that all the time as I walk past there daily. When you're next back into York I would highly recommend la rustique, a French restaurant near Clifford's tower. It's very popular with the locals and I go there once a month.

This is like "Pasty shops" in the West Country, the ones that have "Pasty" in the title, you know the ones. The Pasties in the window look too good to be true, and they are, as you find out when you see what's inside, or rather, what's not inside, when you bite into it. It's really easy to find good pasties in the West Country, just go to any normal bakers, they're always better than the places that call themselves Pasty shops!

Hi Gary I went there 3 years ago and had a beef sandwich, I was very disappointed, it was tasteless, that meal you had just look like sop, hell and earth was you suppose to eat that without proper cutlery and proper dinner plate. That meal reminds me of something tesco use to do back 20 years ago. Full roast in a giant Yorkshire that you microwaved or oven cooked. You didn’t mind as it was cheap and did the job (student days). That just looks like a gimmick based on location.

I can not understand when an establishment boasts to be 'internationally great' and they serve their food in a card board container (disgusting), plastic and wooden cutlery!! Had it been good quality and served properly, I think the price could be justified. Thing is, if they got the basics right on that meal, people would be queuing up, people love their yorkshire pudding, I havent had good stuffing in any place I have been to and its rare to get a good roast potato. Same with chips, I have only ever had good chips at one pub, F&C shops of course, but pubs seem to think serving oven chips is acceptable, its not, because many cook real chips at home.

First off! No presentation whatsoever. Small portions without a plate or cutlery. You might expect that from a street seller, but not anywhere you eat in. Those spuds. I can’t believe they actually served them to you. An absolute cheek. Many moons ago I used to visit York often. And there was a place called Grandma Batty’s if I remember correctly. I'm from New Zealand. I remember going into the supermarket to buy Yorkshire pudding for roast beef. Never do that again. Was to lazy to make my own, which I do in muffin tins. Learnt my lesson.

Donkey's years back, I went, with a group of employees, on a training course to Hull or Huddersfield. I can't remember which! Our tutor took us to a pub that specialised in large filled Yorkshire Puddings and everything was great! So, this one seems to have let the side down.
