Eating a STEAK at a STUNNING RESTAURANT in YORK!

I went here today Gary, with a couple of fussy eaters. The posh fish finger sandwich, the fish and chips and the steak that we had were a complete triumph! These guys are hard to please but they were RAVING about the food, the decor, the general vibe and the excellent service. What a great lunch - thanks for the steer and the review. This place is gold!

The restaurant looks just like my father's hunting lodge. He used to be an avid hunter. The restaurant's food is excellent, as my father occasionally goes there on his cook's days off. I agree the service and meal are both 10/10. I'm glad you are enjoying yourself in York and also, congratulations on reaching 5000.

Having just watched your review of the York Roastery, the food at Forest was how it should be done. The steak was cooked to perfection, always telling if a chef can cook beef/steak to a medium rare or rare. The chips were great, although I winced that the steak was placed on on top of some of them so those were soggy. However, the chips that remained were cooked well-crunchy outside and soft inside. The crunch on the onion rings was outstanding. The vine grown tomatoes were a nice touch. I would gladly pay extra for the peppercorn gravy. Everything looked homemade, and cooked by a good chef and lime staff who know how to cook.Well deserving of the perfect score.

Watching this early video shows how much you have developed your technique and become much more comfortable being filmed. What a delight to see this small independent business offering such fine fare. Your plate did look amazing, especially the well cooked steak, The accompaniments were given the same care in cooking and presentation. And of course Gary you really show the best out of a place. Even a year ago this was excellent prices. When it comes to choice of steak, I do like all varieties of beef steak served medium rare, but my favourite has to be well done Pork Shoulder steak. It is juicy with well charred fat when cooked well.

That looked like a really nice meal, Gary. A really rumpsteak can be difficult to get right, but they got it spot on. The chips looked perfect and the same goes for the rest of the plate. Made me hungry, mate! I prefer a filet steak or a sirloin steak, cooked rare. Another fantastic review, mate! Have a wonderful rest of your stay in Yorkshire. Completely agree with you. I'm always a bit apprehensive about getting a rump steak as it can be particularly tough but it was excellent. Glad you liked the look of it. I've caught up with all the recent videos and YT decided to put this one forward instead. I must say, it hasn't really changed much and that is testament to the integrity since then. Honest reviews, nice editing, cameraman son gets a well done. The work definitely has put a few pounds on you since so perhaps just a nibble and pass on.... All in all, still a great watch. One of the best things in a person’s life is eating a lovely meal with a good glass of wine in fine surroundings and not having to pay an awful lot of money for the privilege. And, judging by your experience in the Forest restaurant in York that place seems to have it all and rightly deserves a 10 score. I stayed at Galtres Lodge last year and dined at the on-prem restaurant, Forest, a couple of times. It was absolutely divine! I share your enthusiasm. Tip for next time; you simply must try the sticky toffee pudding! It is out of this world; hands down the best I've ever had. Wow Gary you found an absolute Jem here you really did, i had to reply the clip when you cut into the Rump as i could not believe it was Rump !! a very good cut and supplier. You asked what cuts we like and i must admit im a fillet man, yes i know Rib Eye etc has better flavour, but at 57 the more tender the meat the better for me, also these great sources like this one you had with brandy, really add to the dish. @@GaryEatsHi Gary yes i love Beef dripping Gravy, after watching your Miller and Carter Steakhouse vlog. I made my own after finding a recipe off the web, but i noticed Tesco have it for sale now. INGREDIENTS 50 g beef dripping 2 shallots 3 garlic cloves ½ star anise 100 g fatty stewing steak like skirt, flank, chuck etc 80 g red wine 20 g port 500 g beef stock ½ teaspoon sugar red wine vinegar ¼ teaspoon xanthan gum see notes INSTRUCTIONS Get a wide sauce pan over a medium heat. Peel and finely dice the shallots. Peel and mince the garlic. Slice the beef into thin slices. Add about a third of the beef dripping to the pan and once melted, add the shallots, garlic, star anise and beef and stir fry for 4 - 6 minutes. Cook until the beef has started to brown and everything smells great. Turn the heat up. Discard the star anise. Add the red wine and port and move everything around to get the great crusty bits off the bottom of the pan. Once the wine has bubbled away to about a third of it's volume, add in the beef stock and remaining beef dripping. Bring to a furious boil. Let this all simmer away until it's about half of what you started with. This will take 20 - 30 minutes. Strain off all the solids (see note) and return the sauce to the pan. Turn the heat down low and adjust seasoning: it might need salt, pepper and a pinch of sugar, and add a couple of drops (I do mean a couple of drops) of red wine vinegar to taste to help balance the richness. Once the flavour is right, whisk in the xanthan gum. You can serve immediately, or it refrigerates or freezes well. Chris.

Gosh that looked absolutely delicious ! Steak perfectly cooked, which doesn’t happen often. I must admit to liking a bit of fat on the edge of the steak but not everybody’s cup of tea. I like mushrooms but not a fan of onion rings, so I’d ditch them and and I’d be cheeky and ask if there was any chance of a fried egg, as a steak and egg combo is delicious. I agree with you about supporting local businesses, particularly in these difficult times when so many businesses are struggling. Another great review, I look forward to the next one

Well deserved 10, can't recommend that place enough. For me ribeye or sirloin steak medium rare. Homemade chips are an absolute treat and just the meal stand out from the rest. Yorkshire hospitality is the best hands down. 🤜🤛

That was really good value for your buck, I normally have sirloin cooked on my iron skillet with butter, rosemary, thyme, salt, pepper and a smidge of garlic. I prefer a good marbling of fat and cooked medium rare to rare, if I’m ever in York I will definitely look up Forest as your rump steak look divine and so juicy. So glad you got to eat a great meal on your last day and thanks for a great video 😊

Looked v nice indeed. I like the look of the menu. It is good to see them being brave enough to only offer one steak option and that being a rump - they are clearly very confident with that choice and it looks like they are right to be! I would always go for the Ribeye (Medium Rare) if it was on the menu and would usually avoid rump because, as you say, can be tough - but that looked spot on. Thanks Gary - great review!

Been here Gary today and oh my you are absolutely spot on here. The burger, mini Yorkies abd two Estrella's I had oh my top marks. Cosy pub and good atmosphere. 10 all the way. Well done on Fifty Thousand subscribers.

*Pure quality plate Gary Eats 👌👌👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻* Beautifully presented,visually appealing and gorgeous environment. I have graduated last few years,I used to be well done but I will do medium no blood now. I know that this is frowned on but I really could not put it in my mouth if there was blood,I appreciate and respect everyone’s preferences- I’m a bit individual when it comes to eating anything- I have to fancy it. I make a mean steak Diane from scratch though!

Looked great. Like you say, rump can be a bit tough and gristly. I like fillet of beef rare or medium/rare. Will be looking out for Forest next time I'm in York. Thanks again Gary for a wonderful video.

Hi Gary …. Wow.. what a great place. You really do find them! Agree with your 8 in the buffet, especially the starter being a bit cold, but you had some good variety in the main course. Yep.. I like that 👍… The lamb madras looks superb visually and as you said a great taste. What a great place to eat in. Another great review and so good to eat so many different foods. Great to see theyre local owned and operated, so impressed by your details.. the meat sourced locally as well.. really impressed. Onion rings, homemade chips and gravy in its own jug.. brilliance!! Great prices too. Steak Question: fillet when celebration. But tbone with eggs, McCain oven chips, gravy, and salad at home. My inner cavewoman wants, medum-rare, fried (for that bubbly dark crust) and doused with rosemary devil butter at end. All the best to you both, thank you for sharing your delicious meal with us.

I like my steak rare to medium rare and that looked perfect. The whole dish looked perfect and what a treat and lovely touch to put vine tomatoes on the plate. Those onion rings looked deliciously crispy too. Not a cheap meal but I would pay it for that. You could see the care and pride they take on the plate!

Oh my goodness Gary that meal looked absolutely fabulous !! I prefer my steak well done or medium-well at a pinch and I'm sure they would do that justice too. Home made chips and a lovely peppercorn sauce really added to the meal as did the vine tomatoes. I only wish we had discovered this restaurant when we were in York a couple of months ago. You certainly did save the best 'til last !

Another wonderful review Gary. It looked more like a mansion rather than a pub and I could see all the flavour from the amazing camerawork. As others have said you are on the rise to You Tube fame as your videos are the perfect length, they are so interesting and perfectly shot. For me its a 10. And the review scored even higher. El Gaucho in York also gets a big thumbs up from me. One of the best steaks I've ever had (my wife wasn't very hungry when we visited so I also got to have half of hers :D )
