Really enjoying your videos. You've got great suggestions. Wanted to make a couple of more based on sharing my home with parrots for decades, studying wild bird behavior in the field, and advising clients in my own parrot behavior work. Our birds need movement. I'd recommend a boing (twister) in just about all of them. The diameter should be thick enough for the birds to get a secure grip. A budgie's boing should be at least 1/2 inch, a green-cheek conure's should be 3/4's inch. When unsure, larger is better. Shape the boing to avoid the poop zone on the lower levels and then hold it from the clip to make sure its movement is balanced. Keep adjusting until it moves easily. (Boings are hand washable.) The towel in the one example can be a problem because the loops can catch a bird's nails, trapping them. Look for extremely tiny loops or even better, a cotton sheet to avoid the problem completely. Cover the cages top, sides, and back to help our birds feel safe. As prey animals, they're instinctively monitoring their environment for perceived threats. A cover helps them to know the limits of their home so they don't need to monitor beyond that. A 100% cotton flat sheet is ideal for breathability. Budgies and cockatiels are prone to night frights so the color of the sheet should be light (and don't add more covers at night. Just leave as is and keep a light on, and you'll never have a problem with night frights.). For other species the cover should be dark, and at night you can add a separate cloth to drop down the front of the cage. There's lots more to cage setup for each species but I wanted to add these couple of tips to help enhance some of your excellent suggestions. Incidentally, was so glad you mentioned the issue with huts! It's too bad they continue to be sold. Super triggering for aggression because our parrots are cavity nesters (so our birds instinctively protect their perceived nest/hut). Replace huts with a sleep perch/swing in the back. Also, really good to see that none of the cages have mirrors, another major trigger. Good work!!

I saved a parrotlet from his old owners. He had pulled all his feathers out and was almost "naked". I scrubbed his cage and he hates when it's closed so we always leave it open. They clipped his wings and I think they damaged them really badly. He refuses to eat anything but sunflower seeds and I know thats not good for him. I even try to give him fruits and vegetables and he won't eat those either. I've tried 6 differnt types of bird feed but he still wont eat it. He seems really happy tho. He sings and talks all day and he likes running on the floor. What can I do for him? He is slowly growing his feathers back but I've had him for 6 months now.

I recommend if looking for a large cage with a narrow bar spacing looking for a double flight cage (mine is a rainforest double flight for an Indian ringneck). Initially I got him a small cage as took a while to find one suitable. It also has decent door sizes. Although I have a ferplast planeta aviary for budgies and it big but doors so tiny. Sadly i cant fit another double flight lol

@bolt14374 жыл бұрын
Toys classed as "Shredding" and "Foraging" are usually a bird favourite They love things they can tear and love to search for treats. Toys to avoid are mirrors are some bells. Birds find mirrors boring and they can cause issues with hormones. And some bells parts can be accidentally ingested by the bird.

I know this is unrelated, but do you always reward your birds for doing tricks like stepping up and targeting. My bird won't do it unless I show him the millet
@FlockTalk4 жыл бұрын
When you first teach a trick you will need to reinforce every time, as they build a strong reinforcement history with a behaviour you won’t need to reinforce as often/ less rewarding things become more reinforcing for the behaviour. Gradually stepping up becomes naturally reinforcing because stepping on to you leads to going to positive/ fun places. If you’re having to show the millet before the behaviour is done they may still have some fear response to it that they’re only fighting through due to the presence of the millet. Some times that will fade over time as the fears resolve, in other cases you need to work to resolve the fears prior. In other cases it’s just a matter of stepping up not being motivating enough yet and they’ll learn to step up more reliably as they build that reinforcement history with it

Why are bird perches and toys always so bright in colour? Is it better in any way to have so much vibrancy in their cage?
@FlockTalk4 жыл бұрын
Yep! Birds can see the same spectrum of light we do as well as the whole UV colour spectrum! They make a lot of decisions based solely on looks, foods that are spoiled are a different colour and tell them to avoid it, They ID each-other by colours we can’t see, etc. The more visually appealing toys/ enrichment are the more likely a bird will want to engage with it. Many even show colour preferences!

I don’t want to make the videos majorly negative, imagine sending in an image that you’re very proud of then having someone tear you to shreds for it. Wouldn’t feel too great. I’d much rather focus on the good things in setups and point out a few smaller changes. People can then take the positives and apply them to their own setups, people who were featured won’t feel like they’re being bullied, and there’s still some constructive criticism that isn’t so overwhelming that it crushes and disheartens people. Education is important but going around bullying isn’t helpful!

So, I bought the biggest cage that I could afford for my black headed caique, almost double the size the law told me to buy. So, if I want to add another caique there's no problem. She loves it. We also have hard punishments for animal cruelty, you WILL be put in prison. (Great, then you'll know how the animals was feeling.) @@Isla-s6q Has he been for a vet check up? As neglect cases can have medical issues which contribute to their issues.
