My most memorable costume was because of self-image issues in elementary school. In the 3rd grade, I had acquired an airy-fairy pastel pink nightgown and robe set that my grandmother had for god knows how long. (I guess it would have been called negligee back in the 50's.) I could finally be the Princess I always wanted to be ... I may have been a clumsy and stout and plain princess, but I WAS A PRINCESS, goddamnit! For the first and only time in my life I felt beautiful and ethereal and delicate, like I imagined the other girls in class always felt. I won the costume contest. Yeah, I had issues. But I got better.

The costume I'm the most proud of: I was twelve and went as Juliette from Romeo and Juliette. Not just ordinary Juliette but Juliette AFTER SHE DIED. I was very proud of it. I did my own make-up put a ton of blue eyeshadow and black shadow under my eyes because I was dead and purple eyeshadow for blush. I painted my lips like mega dark red. It was not good make up but I was so so proud. I was a weird child but my mom encouraged the weirdness and she was just glad that I didn't go as hippie again. Edit: Holy crow I was not expecting this many likes. 20 tops but over 1000. Cheesey Pete.

“If they can’t handle you at your drawn on facial hair, they don’t deserve you” hits super close to home for me. Second semester of freshman year of college I had just begun dating a guy, while also being in theatre. We were doing “Much Ado About Nothing” and I was cast as Dogberry- and of course I had a drawn on beard. When my boyfriend saw me with the beard I said “I bet I look stupid huh” to which he replied something like “no you look great!” he wished me luck and gave me a kiss without any hesitation. Almost four years later, we are happily married nerds (continuing to partake in a few cosplay events from time to time!) AND we have a blue betta fish named Floyd who is a very good boy :)

My neighborhood's "soda house": the dad would be in the front yard with the barbecue, and kids could have their choice of a piece of candy or a hot dog. Parents could choose a can of soda or a glass of wine ;) ...Of course we also had that one house that gave out king sized candy bars. I had a boyfriend who had a "cotton candy house" in his neighborhood growing up, which I'm still jealous of.

When my Mom was in her late 20’s she dressed my older brother and sister as the Smurf’s for a contest at our local mall. She used blue food dye, thinking that it would come out in the bath but it did not. 😂 My bro and sis were BLUE for a week after Halloween and my mom was devastatingly embarrassed because she is from a very strict “anti-Halloween” family and her Dad saw them and was like, “Why are my grandkids blue Sandy? Why?” 😂 and she just 🤷‍♀️. Edit: they did win the contest. Which was a meal for four from IHOP and two boxes of a new cereal 😂 😂

So sad that I miss this because I have a good one: I live in Mexico, so here we have the day of the dead 2 days after Halloween, and when I was 7 years old my school organized an event in which everyone had to wear traditional skeletons to put it in some way (like in coco) but that day I did not attend classes, the only friend I had told me by phone message (yes, the hella old ones) that everyone was going to wear a costume but she did not specify anything and I attended the festival of the day of the dead dressed as broccoli. A running, giant broccoli...everyone laugh, I cried, and my dad take a photo of me as a broccoli surrounded of skeletons while I cried. Yes.

My most memorable costume: In 3rd grade, I wanted to go as a classic ghost for Halloween (think Charlie Brown, bedsheet with eyeholes, etc) but when I got to my friends house to eat pizza before trick-or-treating, I realized the bed sheet wouldn’t stay in place, so the eyeholes would move around a lot. Our solution? Borrow my friend’s headband and put it on my head, over the bed sheet, to keep it in place. The headband was bright pink and sparkly. So I was apparently a ghost from an 80’s aerobics class 😂

RE: Winter jacket. My daughter is offended by the usually rainy and cold Halloween weather. She said, just this afternoon, "I wish we had Summerween so I could wear my Moana costume." I made her one two years ago, and she's not been able to wear it to anything. Our little comicon has been cancelled for the last 2 years and of course Halloween is cold and has been weird.

Your Jack Sparrow costume story reminded me of when I was at a Halloween party in college with my face painted ghoulishly. Now that I am adult and I have a child of my own, I am sooooo excited to let him experience Halloween to the fullest! When I was 5 I dressed up as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, my cousins dressed up as the scarecrow and tin man. All the costumes were hand-made by my Grandma and my cousins and I had even mapped out a game plan for the neighborhood. I remember being so excited to go trick or treating with my mother when she went into labor, so we rushed her to the hospital and my sister was born and I just remember being so pissed that my mom couldn't come trick or treating. I even asked her if we could dress my 5-hour old sister as the Cowardly lion and bring her with us.

Another Danish person here, with a "fun" lil history lesson: A tradition we have on Fastelavn (Halloween was not introduced until the 2010's), is to fill a barrel with candy (kinda like a piñata) and take turns hitting it with a bat. The first person to break it open becomes The Cat King, and the one that get's the final piece of the barrel becomes The Cat Queen. And they each get a little paper crown. The reason for the names, are based on the history of the game. We call it "Slå katten af tønden" which roughly translates to "beat the cat out of the barrel". And that is exactly what they would do. Black cats used to be seen as The Devil's minions and when Fastelavn came around, people would put black cats in barrels, hit the barrel until the cat came out, and then proceed to... kill the cat with bats. Of course we don't do that anymore, and over the past 10 years, Halloween has gotten a lot bigger than Fastelavn. At least among the younger generations, as Fastelavn is mainly for children. But as a kid I loved dressing up for Fastelavn and to hit the barrel. I was very aggressive and stubborn as a kid, and would often get crowned The Cat King. I think my most memorable costume, was when I dressed up as Mulan and won both titles of Best Costume and Cat King. Honorable mentions are Death and a giraffe costume that was several sizes too small, but I insisted on wearing anyway.

I live in Canada now and none of my friends can relate because they all had the winter-coat-over-costume fiasco but nothing is worse than walking through the neighbourhood all sweaty and having to walk all the way home in the heat. Don't even think about a multi-layered costume, face paint, or wigs. Yes, I'm sure we had some cooler Halloween nights, but c'mon, it was Florida. If it wasn't hot and humid, it was raining. So, my kids' school does an All Saints Day celebration every year. They dress as saints and do a brief presentation on some facts about their saints, then people are supposed to guess who they are. Trouble is, saint costumes aren't exactly big sellers at Spirit Halloween, so I make them. It's fun, and I've been blessed with some kooky kids who like doing martyrs and saints with weird stories. So, we've had eyeballs on a plate for St. Lucy for a kindergartener, St. Wilgefortis (complete with great bushy beard and gold slippers), St. Felix in a spiderweb 🕸 cloak, St. Lawrence with an oven grate for a grill and salt shakers full of dry ice in the pockets to smoke... it's good times. My worst Halloween costume was as a classic witch. The costume itself wasn't bad, the bad part was at the end of the night when it was all being taken off. My mother, not having green face makeup, made some with food coloring. I don't know how long my face was green...

I don’t think I’ve ever had an “embarrassing” Halloween costume per say. But there’s a picture in my house somewhere of me dressed as Minnie Mouse (whiskers and all.) and baby me decided Minnie Mouse needed a job. So I took myself off to my brothers dress up box and took off my mouse ears in favour of a fireman’s hat. It wouldn’t have been that bad, had I not then basically thrown chocolate pudding at my face in a sad attempt at eating. So the photo is just me as Minnie Mouse the firewoman covered in chocolate pudding. Good times 😅

When my brother was 13 he dressed up as 'L' from death note. But the thing is he was a chubby white kid with a big curly afro and manga wasn't exactly popular in small town Texas so the costume didn't really translate that well. By the end of the night he was so tired of explaining his costume that he just started telling people he was dressed up as a used car salesman.

I’m so happy you got black bag/“trash bag” costume pics from Ireland because that’s all we ever wore for Halloween for basically my entire childhood. Black bags or cheap red plastic “devil” capes with those horrible rubber witch fingers and the flimsiest hats ever! 😅 ah good times… we also used to carve turnips which is where the tradition of pumpkin carving comes from! Pumpkins are not native to Ireland so Irish people used to carve turnips (which is VERY difficult to do!) to ward off evil spirits on Halloween night. When past generations emigrated to America and discovered pumpkins they found them much easier to carve and thus carried on the tradition of warding off evil spirits. You’re welcome 18th century ancestors! 👋🏻

We don’t really have Halloween in Australia, but when I was 13 (2006) my friends and I were determined to go trick or treating anyway. I was dressed as Princess Leia in a white dress and bagel plaits. We were so surprised that we were literally the only kids on the streets, and that every house we went to had no idea why we were there, or even that it was Halloween. A couple of people found lollies for us, and one nona wrapped up some biscuits in tin foil for us!

I had a similar experience trying to trick or treat in Sweden in 2008. Most people just apologised because they didn't have candy lying around, or they'd try to give us money instead :D But to my knowledge Halloween has started to become more commonly celebrated there now. But funnily enough we have a different kind of trick or treating tradition on Easter here in the Nordics! Basically kids dress up as witches and go door to door threatening to curse people if they don't give them candy. So luckily we just had to wait some months for the chocolate eggs, lol.

Halloween memories: I think two very memorable costumes were when I was in elementary school. One year I dressed as a mime, Marcel Marceau inspired. I was completely committed to my craft and did not speak the whole day and frightened some of my friends because the white face paint I was wearing seemed to make my teeth appear yellower than normal. The second one and a very personal favorite of mine and everyone who saw it: I was a jack-in-the box. My mother painted a large packing box with the lid and bottom cut out and attached shoulder straps to it and made me a metallic pink and purple jester costume. To this day it is a regret that there are no photos of this costume. It was fabulous.

For easy toddler costumes I would have my twins select a Sesame Street monster. Then I would just put them in a sweatpant-sweatshirt combo in the right color. The only thing I had to make was the felt headband with the eyes. I wanted to make proper costumes but began doing this to cope with the childish tendency to change one's mind about one's costume choice on October 29th. No more $100+ of fabric wasted every year.

As a Floridian, I can vouch that Halloween in Florida is just as challenging, but for the exact opposite reasons. It remains essentially summer here until a couple weeks into November, normally. Which means that Halloween night frequently consists of 80-90 degree heat with %70-100 humidity. Neat costumes that involve any form of jacket, cloak, or excessive fabric are normally removed in the first hour or so, and makeup melts pretty quickly. But sometimes the weather can be nice if "fall" decides to show up early!

I never actually got to wear this costume, but when I was 8, I had planned on dressing up as Olive Oyl with my dad as Popeye (I drew plans for it and everything) as I would spend every Saturday morning watching Popeye with my dad and he always reminded me of Popeye. Unfortunately, my dad passed away before Halloween, so I never wore it. On a lighter note, there was a year I went trunk or treating at my local church dressed as Isis, the Egyptian goddess (because I was obsessed with Ancient Egypt as a child) and would get livid whenever people would mistake me for Cleopatra.

So, when my mom was little, for some reason, her parents never let her or her sisters be princesses for Halloween; so my mom consoled herself by telling herself that when she had little girls of her own, she would be able to dress them as princesses for Halloween. Unfortunately, when my sister was old enough to trick or treat, she never wanted to be a princess (in fact one year she wanted to be a gorilla wearing a red boa.) and after her my mom only had sons; until I came along... At last, a second chance. I was 3-4 years old and I remember my mom asking me what I wanted to be for Halloween. I wanted to be a fairy. My mom then insisted that a princess was like a fairy to a not very convinced 3-4 year old me; and leaving no room for argument. At last! My mom was making the princess costume for one of her daughters! Que me getting into a car accident where I had to go into surgery to get my nose reconstructed. I was a princess with not so pretty stitches on her nose that year... Sorry, mom.

My parents where super Christian when I was a child so we honestly never got to celebrate Halloween. Mostly we would just taunt the neighborhood children with a big bowl of candy sitting in our very large bay window. Now that I think about it as an adult, I kinda of cringe knowing that my parents actually did that. Anyhow now that I'm an adult and have a child of my own. I am planning on making her a Kirby outfit because she has been begging me for it and she's only three so yeah it's happening. Good thing I've been into cosplay for some time now and have plenty experience making such outfits. This year we may even be at a anime convention during Halloween, take that Mom and Dad I don't dress up once-a-year I dress up as many times as I can afford it now.

Candace and I 100% had the same haircut as a kid. It’s called having wavy hair your mom has no idea what to do with so they cut it short and give you bangs and you end up looking like a cocker spaniel. Or as my best friend in elementary school affectionately called it, my “triangle haircut”. It results in a lot of frizz, a lot of brushing, and a lot of tears until you learn what either curly girl method, hair straighteners, or layered haircuts are.

In my elementary school, the student council would choose one boy and one girl from each class to be in a school-wide competition. One year I was a robot with a costume very similar to the one in this video, except we also took apart an old radio and glued the wires and speaker covers and other bits to the front. And, importantly, I had another silver cardboard box over my head. I think we used bike reflectors as the eyes? Anyway, this other girl in my class, Dellalyn, also had a cardboard box based costume. She came as the White House! Hers was really good, and she got picked by the student council. Then, they picked me, because they thought I was a boy. I took my helmet off and they saw I was a girl, and then they changed their pick to this boy wearing a store-bought Spiderman costume. I was so disappointed. To this day I wonder, if they had known I was a girl, if they would have picked me over Dellalyn.

Fast forward, morning of party. I ran downstairs excited to get my costume on. I got ready for school then presented myself to my mother, prepared to be dressed like Cinderella. This woman, pulled out a square thing covered in white fabric and plopped it over my head so that it rested on my shoulders. It was then I noticed paper plates. cups and plastic utensils glued to the white fabric. On my head, she stuck a hat covered in plastic fruit. I was a fuggin table. That wasn't the worst part. That came once I got to school. I was too wide to sit next to other kids and some boy kept trying to set his drink on me. Expectations and reality are sometimes galaxies apart.

This year will be the sixth year that two of my girlfriends from high school and I dress up and have a Halloween gathering. Always a fun time! We don’t always have a theme, but this year is “under the sea”. My two friends are going to be a narwhal and a crab, and I will be a naiad (water nymph)

These are all so cute!!! I love how "embarrassing" is more about the expression or emotion from the moment cuz everyone is just adorable. 💀❤️

This costume wasn’t really embarrassing, it was more so what I did while wearing that was strange… I’ve always loved cats, and today I have two of my own, so it’s not surprising that I had dressed up as a black cat one year. It wasn’t a very well put together costume, just a black shirt, some black pants, and a tail and ears, but I absolutely loved it. My parents and I were walking down the sidewalk to reach the next house in line for our trick or treating “journey”, and it just so happened that we passed a girl my age dressed in a fluffy white cat costume. Now, I know what you’re thinking, all of this sounds relatively normal and tame. But I looked at her and immediately thought to myself about how some animals would start fighting each other when they came a little too close to them or intruded on their space. And so…. I hissed at her. She didn’t react and we just kept walking, but I remember feeling so judged by my parents and the girl in the white cat costume lmao. I think this is where my social anxiety developed😂

Hissing is much more acceptable than running over and grooming her 🤷‍♀️

it's OK, I still hiss. my housemate questions my species for it, but sometimes you just want the sound of frustration distilled and there is nothing better for those times than a bit of feline swearing.

I love that her Victorian pumpkin lady costume head is perfectly positioned in the reflection of her vanity mirror haha haha. Noice 👌 Also after seeing all of the doggos in this video, can we please see some pictures of Frodo when he was a puppy?

I only remember two Halloween costumes as a kid, a dead bride and a bumble bee. The one with the pumpkin puppy made me so soft! I loved this video.

I really like seeing teenagers going trick or treating, especially if they dress up! They could be doing worse things than getting free candy 😂

Crying in Australian 'cause we never really had Halloween here up until the last couple of years, and it still depends on what part of town you live in. So I have to buy candy for other people's children who usually don't show up and then I eat it all. Good deal! Also I must say the subtle angle of the mirror to allow Victorian Pumpkin Lady to hover ominously in the background is 11/10 squids. 🙌

and then when we do have halloween it’s so damn hot. i went as coraline one year and three houses away i had to take off my raincoat, i was sweating buckets. by the end of the night i was walking barefoot in a tank top and shorts clutching the various pieces of costume and haphazardly putting key elements back on whenever we neared a house that might have lollies

My son's first Halloween costume was homemade. I got a 2 foam pillow inserts, cut them to the shape of bread, and painted the "crust" brown. Got red green and yellow cloth swatches and turned them into lettuce, tomato and cheese with the help of some cereal boxes. I sat my son under the top layer of bread in his stroller and he was my Sam and Cheese Sammich 💚 I miss that costume.

my favorite costume as a child was when I dressed up as a toy story army soldier. I made the plastic foot panel that attached to their feet, painted every visible pat of my skin green and wore a swim cap under the helmet to hide my hair. Not only did my teacher tell me I was in the wrong group when I tried to join my class for the school halloween dance, but my own grandmother went to my mother and asked who "that little boy" was as she pointed me out (her first granddaughter, and eldest grandchild) at the family party.

This was awesome. Halloween is my mum's birthday so I was never allowed to go trick or treating, but I DID dress up every year to hand out sweets to everyone else when they rang the doorbell.

Oh my Dad made me and my siblings the BEST costumes. My sister went as The Hobbit one year, went as the headless horseman (her body was a horse) once, and a UNICEF box another year (remember the orange ones, and we'd say "trick or treat for Unicef!")- my sister and Dad made that out of a refrigerator box. One year, my brother went as a Bananaconda from the book children's book Scraminals and I went as a Pandafodil. My brother was also once a gargoyle and my Dad and brother made it out of chickenwire and paper mache). One year, I was a Twizzlers container and another I was a snowglobe and my Dad attached a machine to blow the packing peanuts we'd put inside our constructed globe of shower curtain so the snow globe could have snow go everywhere like if you shaked it. When I was really little my brother went as Harry Potter, my sister went as Hermione, my Dad went as Ron, and I was Ginny for some reason (I was like two). Anyway my Dad's amazing and super creative and my siblings and I always looked amazing on Halloween (our school had a parade and we always looked so good).
