I keep scratching my head over the Avatar land. I'm one of those who never did get around to seeing Avatar, but that's neither here nor there. What baffles me is why did Disney decide to theme an entire land around a movie that had seen its heyday almost ten years ago? And as impressive as its special effects were, the hype over it seemed to have died down and, it seemed, people were no longer that crazy about the movie--from what I've heard, it seemed to be lacking in the character department. I'd much rather have seen them do something Fantasia-themed in time for the movie's 80th anniversary--that's something that's proven to stand the test of time, and they could've done something with the hippos/ostriches/elephants from Dance of the Hours, as well as Chernabog, and maybe something Greek-mythology themed for the Pastoral Symphony sequence as a sort of Beastly Kingdom-lite...
@jmz82105 жыл бұрын
When Avatar came out it exploded becoming the highest grossing movie of all time. Disney wanted to cash in on that since BK was not gonna happen. They needed something big at the time that would fit with the themes of conservation and animals since AK was in desperate need. Avatar fits in with AK, while retaining that fantasy element which explores animals that never existed (part of the concept exploring animals of today, the past, and fantasy). James Cameron planned to have the sequels not to far from then, so Disney thought it was a good idea (they didn't own Star Wars yet), so they signed the deal. But the sequels kept getting delayed, year after year. Disney started construction, so it was too late to back peddle. Patience for the Avatar sequels were getting lost and this made Disney nervous. Cameron kept promising sequels but there was no sign of that happening until 2017 when he finished the script for 4 sequels and has currently finished up filming 2 and 3. Pandora opened and to this day FOP still has lines up to 3-4 hours almost everyday. The deal paid off. In a sense, it's helping generate interest in the Avatar sequels, to then help Disney, especially since they own it now after the Fox deal. Cameron sequels/movies take time, so it's not a surprise. T2 was 7 years after the first Terminator, Avatar was 12 years after Titanic. So, it's paid off for Disney. We'll see if Pandora will pay off for the sequels. The ball is in Cameron's court now depending how good they will be.

I would personally love an entire park - not just a single land - themed after ancient myths and folklore, like what The Lost Continent was doing. Tokyo DisneySea does something similar, with its theming being ports of call around the world, and it's arguably the best theme park in the world due to its meticulous theming, beautiful sets, and attention to detail. That, I think, proves that an entire park dedicated to The Lost Continent could work, if done properly. People never get tired of mythology.

Disneyland Paris' opening really was not a failure. The actual attendance was close to the projections. The issue was the six resort hotels that opened alongside The Magic Kingdom. I never got to visit Islands of Adventure when Merlinwood was there, but it kind of reminds me of a technologically enhanced Renaissance Fair, and I mean that in the best way because I love a good Ren fair. The thing is, if they expand HP into the rest of the Lost Continent area, what would they build? We already have Hogsmeade and Hogwarts and Universal got Diagon Alley, so what would they put there? The issue with The Ministry of Magic or The Burrow is that they would seem out of place being near Hogwarts. Maybe something with the Black Lake or Shrieking Shack? Hagrid’s motorbike adventure is already sort of the forest.

Hyrule would also be more likely to preserve the general feel and aesthetic that Lost Continent was going for, while also providing a fresh spin. There would definitely still be a Temple attraction, as Temples/Dungeons are the core of the series. Mythos could easily stay open with minimal retheming. The Sinbad's Bazaar area could even keep a similar aesthetic if they want to take some inspiration from Gerudo Town. It seems like the perfect IP to use in that section of Island's of Adventure. The big temple for Poseidon's Fury would easily translate into a Zelda Dungeon-themed attraction. A Sheikah Tower from Breath of the Wild would be a worthy successor to the Trident Statue as a landmark. If they want to keep a similar aesthetic to the Sinbad area, they could always base it off of Gerudo Town. They could probably keep Mythos, as the general theme of it would still meld with the Zelda universe adequately. They could have a lot of fun with unique food options as well, supplying Red and Blue potions as drinks (along with Lon Lon Milk) and meals based on the cooking in Breath of the Wild (complete with purple Monster Desserts).

Animal Kingdom is one of the best parks in Orlando (Islands of Adventure is #1). Dinoland sucks, but the rest of the park more than makes up for it. I've always thought Animal Kingdom is underrated; it took many years and multiple expansions to live down its opening-day reputation as a half-day park with very little to do. But it's got some of Disney's best theming, and it has good rides now. Dinoland USA does need to be reimagined or replaced (making roadside cheesiness the theme is just too blatant an attempt at cost-cutting through irony). @jmz82105 жыл бұрын
In all honesty, I believe Pandora actually fits better than Beastly Kingdom theming-wise. BK didn't really have themes of conservation which is the essence of AK. It was more of a cool land. Pandora does both, what with the visuals that made Avatar become the juggernaut that it is. Plus, James Cameron and Disney are working together since the Fox merger which makes Avatar belong to Disney (James still has the IP rights though). Ofc, they're going to want the highest grossing movie of all time under their belt. With Star Wars, Marvel, and Avatar, they've taken over the highest grossing franchises.
@MattMcIrvin5 жыл бұрын
At this point, I think visitors find Disney's Pandora land more interesting than Avatar the movie. It's stage-setting, not a story people really care about--and if the Avatar sequels ever actually get made, it'll probably be the Disney themed land driving interest in the movies rather than the other way around.

When you were going over the 6 lands of IOA (at 5:18 ) you never mentioned the Harry Potter/ Hogsmeade land. The most important land. Plus you could obviously tell that the 4 lands you named and the lost continent land didn’t add up to 6 lands.

At that part we were talking about the opening day lands at IOA, the land we didn’t talk about to make up the six was Port Of Entry :) - Luke

So whilst the park opened with 6 lands they now have 8, joining the original six is the Wizarding World of Harry Potter: Hogsmeade as well as Skull Island. - Luke
