Great video. I’ve owned the x100f, and an x-t3, and sold them both. I bought a GRlll and absolutely love it. I concur with your findings and opinion. I enjoy your channel and just subscribed. Have a great day!

I have more content planned but like everything in life, life gets in the way. Love the Ricoh but for many it’s difficult to explain how a little black box that looks like a simple point and shoot, is really that good.

Thank you for the very personal and honest review. I want both!

Many thanks for the review. I am looking at both. I already have Fujifilm kit but the GR appeals in respect of size and also the fact it saves natively to DNG - a huge plus. I will probably go for the Ricoh despite the lack of WR. After all, I had decades with non WR film cameras and never had a problem - ever! Loved the review so much I have subscribed. Thanks again.

Remember if the 28mm lens is too wide Ricoh have a new GRIII out with a 40mm lens.
@donaldpirie54853 жыл бұрын
@@photoexplorer That's the next problem ....I have used MFT primes of (FF equivalents) 24, 30, 34 and 40. I think I found the 40 slightly too tight so am likely to order the 28mm - I think ....! I really love the 'feel' of Fujifilm and am surprised I am aiming for the Ricoh, but it does tick more boxes. Just looking at you follow up video.

@@donaldpirie5485 The Ricoh has helped me achieve some of my best shots because people just don’t see it. The dng files are much better to work with than the fuji cr2 files, especially if you use photoshop in my opinion.

I own the griii I owned the original x100 when it first came out which was a cool camera all be it a little fiddly. Out of the two I really like the looks or the X100 series but I also like the size of the griii the AF might be slow but the snap focus helps with that unless you’re shooting at F2.8. Anyway thanks for the video and there’s always going to be biased people in favour of one thing over another.

Nice video. I bought a GRiii whilst trying to figure out what gear i need/want. (I always wanted a Leica Q, ideally a Q2 mono now). I also had a Sony A7ii last year. Then I thought, 'what about a point and shoot I can change lenses on too?'. So I sold my GRiii and bought a Fuji X-E3 with a small lens and the kit zoom. That lasted about 3 months :-) Couldn't get along with Fuji. Very frustrating menu and the fact that the camera will override your settings if it thinks it can get a better exposure is unforgivable. The more creative you get, the more frustrating the camera gets. It really got in the way of taking pictures and even though the X-E line is smaller the X100 (body) none of them are actually pocketable like the GR. So, sold that, went crying back to Ricoh, but scored a really good deal on a used GRiii (4 batteries, thumb grip, leather case, external charger) and now I've learned from my Fuji mistake. I'm still considering a Q (on and off), but can't quite take the leap as long as I have the GR. I had the spare funds for camera gear last month, but ended up with an A7iii and new lenses and gave my wife my old A7ii. I agree with most of what you said about the Ricoh/Q comparison. The only thing that doesn't work is the lens aperture. The Leica Q is a true 1.7, where the Ricoh (being a cropped sensor) is more like a 4.2 - which is not great, but not awful, and it actually excels at what it's intended for, but it's not ideal in low light, in situations where the full frame, 1.7 Q would be very happy. On the whole, I miss not having an EVF on the Ricoh. But its size and talents outweigh its cons. Nothing can beat it on size. You've named some: leaf shutter, ibis etc, and I'd add highlight metering as an important feature of the GR which i was happy to discover is on the A7iii now as well! Both the GR and the Sony behave themselves very well and apply "constraints". The Sony is my swiss army knife. The Ricoh is my scalpel. With the Leica Q being about the same size as the Sony, and the GR being almost as good as the Lecia, I can't see my self owning a Q any time soon :-(
@photoexplorer3 жыл бұрын
The Leica Q lens, you are right can’t be compared. It really is an incredible lens attached to a very good camera. It sounds ridiculous but the Q really does make you want to pick it up and use it, no ridiculous menus, no over computerised software, no infinite choices just a manual/ point and shoot that takes exceptional photographs. The Ricoh is a great camera and I working on a new project with it that looks at Daido Moriyama. His style and use of the Ricoh has opened my eyes even more to the camera. I am hoping to publish the video in the next couple of weeks. Watch out for it and let me know what you think.

This is pretty depressing. Any trained photographer wants a viewfinder. The Ricoh GRIII screen washes out in bright light and you can't see settings. The GRIII AF continues to live 5 years in the past, isn't weather sealed, loses its fill flash (for experienced shooters who know how to use), shoots far slower, has poor controls and a slower lens. If you already own a bunch of cameras, I can see adding a GRIII to play with (I did), but it's just silly to give it a win over a FAR more capable X100V. The X100V is the camera I'll grab when I don't need a pro body and set of lenses. The GRIII was just too limited too often and just sat. There's a reason why the X100v is often compared to the Leica Q2, folks. And with no budget limitations, I actually chose the X100v over the Leica!
@photoexplorer3 жыл бұрын
It all a point of view. Surely not depressing. There are many professionals that swear by both and rightly so, it’s what it does for you and your photography. Thanks for the comment.

@@photoexplorer I just feel it's rather important to identify the GRIII as a niche product. Experienced users of the GRIII often admit to "cropping to compose" because they are limited by the lack of viewfinder. It's fair to say it's not nearly as well rounded as a X100V and most users (like me) find a place for it ONLY in conjunction with our existing kits. I'm a working pro with pro gear, so having a GRIII for niche applications is fine. But it's tougher to ignore the GRIII limitations against a X100V when you have fewer gear options. The X100V is a fairly "complete" fixed lens package and I actually chose it over the Leica Q2. But the GRIII really can't compete in that arena. My view is that your review gives somewhat unrealistic expectations for the GRIII "best" usage envelopes. Most shooters will be better served by the X100V.

@@robertbrody4032 in terms of features I agree. In terms of image quality the GR III is better in many conditions. I wear glasses and find the screen very useful and clear, but it’s just my opinion. The 100V price point is considerably more than the GR III. If we are talking features etc then the 100V is easily matched by other Fuji cameras at a lower price point. I completely agree about the Q2 I bought a secondhand Q because it is arguably a better image and that is also an opinion shared by a number of photographers who have sold their Q2 and gone back to their Q. Even that’s opinion because there are those that will continue to chase pixel count to create hyper reality rather than a photographic of image, which is ultimately what photography is about.
@robertbrody40323 жыл бұрын
@@photoexplorer There are a lot of people who have tested these two cameras and you're the only one who's claimed that the GRIII has better IQ. That WAS the case against the X100F, but the X100V lens is both sharper and faster. Side by side, the X100V always bested the GRIII, though they were pretty close. Price points have nothing to do with photography. Two of my accounts are for jewelry and I'm very focused on color accuracy, yet another area where the GRIII doesn't match the X100V (or my Nikon pro bodies). But in. the end I'll always choose the camera that will "get the shot" and the GRIII can't match the X100V in that capacity. \

@@robertbrody4032 The video was my decision based on my opinion. The 100V on specification is better, however, the files created by the GR III are superior especially in Adobe. There are issues with Adobe and the xtrans sensor. I find the GR III easier to use and to me more intuitive. The IBIS is a definite win for the Ricoh and despite the 100V lens sharpness the Ricoh has produced stunning sharpness. It’s great to debate and no matter what that’s the point of any video some will agree and some disagree. Thanks.👍👍👍 keep watching more to come.
