I was impressed with the lab images as well as your own and would appreciate if you could say which lab you used - I want to scan some old family snapshots as complete films (I'll be scanning my own images at home) so the lab route has an advantage in that instance

because a crop ratio is medium format.. right
@photoexplorer Жыл бұрын
Based on pixel count that is generated through digital medium format cameras, this was demonstration that even using this small camera format you can create images that can rival more expensive medium format digital cameras, by focus stacking etc.
@obomasinladen Жыл бұрын
@@photoexplorer pixel count has nothing to do with why medium format looks like medium format though right?. Sensor size and dof does. It’s like me shooting on a canon r5, cropping into 6x7 and saying it’s medium format.. I mean it’s cropped like medium format and it’s got just as many pixels but regardless of resolution it’s nothing like mf. Just a weird comparison to me..
@photoexplorer Жыл бұрын
@@obomasinladen I am aware of dof that’s what gives medium format it’s unique look. But in world where people measure in pixels the exercise was to show that large prints can be achieved in equivalent sizes to medium format. I just wanted to show the capability of this small camera. Just trying to get people to think in different ways, it can’t compete with the medium format look, but then it’s a fraction of the price. Thanks for the chat.

Beautiful video, Jonathan. Thanks. How do you frame the two-shot panorama to adjust for vertical lines? Do you raise the height of the camera on the tripod? Do you fix vertical lines in a raw processor? Viewers want to know more. Cheers.
@photoexplorer Жыл бұрын
They are shot vertically rather than the camera in a horizontal position. I follow the process as I would for horizontal panoramas in photoshop. If I have any merging verticals I can use the warp tool in PS to adjust these. With panoramic photography you can use any shot sequence, but use live view to make sure of overlaps in the shots, so that the software can stitch together successfully. I have even done this handheld with my Ricoh GRiii and the files are so good you can print them to a large size, as some files will go beyond 60mp.

That is wisely spoken. And there is a wide gradual slope from Anselm Adams' clarity to Moriyama and even further. I would even go further and postulate that a realistic and technically perfect reproduction of the real world is no art! Art ist refraction of the world through your artistic medium - a camera and the artistic mind.

It also, in my humble opinion, ends the argument in artist circles that photography isn’t an art form.

the pan and zoom of the final images makes it very difficult to appreciate them for what they are. i'd much prefer you show the images in their entirety and then, if you still feel the need to pan and zoom, do so after you've given the viewer a minute to appreciate the image as a whole.

I have a bit of buyer’s remorse. I bought the X100V shortly before the GR lllx was announced. A bit of background … I’ve been shooting-on and off-for about 50 years. I’ve had all kinds of film and digital cameras. I’m also a longtime Fuji user (original X100, X-Pro 1, X-E3). Out of curiosity, I picked up a GR lllx a few weeks ago. It was mainly to see if it would entice me to shoot more, and get over my reticence of shooting in public. When I take out the X100V, I feel very self-conscious. It’s an irrational fear, but it’s there. The culture around traditional cameras is a lot different, nowadays, and that also can’t be ignored. I’ve never had a bad experience shooting with my X100. On the contrary, people will ask me about it. They think it’s a film camera. But even that, in itself, means you’re drawing attention to yourself. The GR lllx looks like a toy. Some describe it as stealthy, but I would say it’s non-intimidating. The action of shooting is phone-like, as perceived by someone else. Ubiquitous. I also find it more efficient in operation. And the files, IMO, are every bit as good as Fuji-and I really like Fuji files. The GR loses the luxurious feel of the X100V, the flipscreen and the viewfinder, but none of that matters if the camera doesn’t get used. They are both great cameras, and are often compared, but they have very different philosophies. So far, the X100 sits on the shelf, and the GR goes outside to play.

That’s what happened to me. So much so that even though I have other cameras, my Ricoh is still used and used when I too feel self conscious when shooting street shots. It’s also an excellent landscape camera and you can purchase Nisi filters made especially for it.

Its a great camera for landscape photography ! Get the Nisi Master filter kit and use that with a tripod ; especially around water ! You'll really understand then ! I use the GR2 myself because I feel its more my style and honestly I like its photo quality more. Also, I'm going to wait for an articulating screen and hoping for weather sealing too ! The Ibis would be nice, but why make it a smaller camera ? Everybody mentions they want a viewfinder, but an articulating screen is all I need. I also added the GH-3 adapter and hood to be able to use 49mm filters or to use the Nisi Master filter set. I also have the 21mm conversion lens and the macro conversion lens which gets you much closer than the macro setting. I normally keep the GH-3 on with a UV filter to keep the dust suck down and protect the lens better because I live in a rain forest in the Olympic mountains of Washington . I'm really enjoying your videos and have just subscribed. Thanks for listening and keep it going strong ! LarryMac

Great to hear from you. I love the Ricoh and after 2 years owning it, I really can’t find anything to dislike apart from the confusing ISO settings which can jump around when using the wheel, but that’s probably my incompetence. Thanks for the encouragement.

I often screw up the ISO settings too. I just have gotten in the habit of double checking before shooting. Often I shoot in aperture priority and put ISO in Auto 100-800/100-1600/ or 100-3200 and let camera choose shutter. I use exposure compensation a lot too. Pretty easy camera once you figure out the few quirks ! Regards, LarryMac

Good to see you back 😊 I have been through the same process and also do my own scans. Had a lot of trouble in the beginning with light in the corners. Some months ago, however, I discovered Kodak Vision 3, which I get from Silbersalz35 in Germany. Theres films have to be returned to the company for developing, and at the same time they do a high resolution scan. I still have around 12 rolls of other film I am shooting parallel, but after that I think it will be Vision 3 for a long time

Great video. I used to own and XA, but mine had a little focus lever under the lens, so it must have been the XA1. The slider on the side controlled aperture, rather than zone focus, if my memory serves me well. It also had a little detachable flash that screwed on the end. That was years ago. I used to load it with B&W print film. I had a darkroom at the time, so it didn't cost me much to process. I wonder what happened to it? I have also owned 3 versions of the Ricoh GR, and currently have the GRIII. Love these little pocket cameras.

You definitely had the better XA. That is the camera everyone wants. The original Ricoh GR would be great to use today as I also have the the Ricoh GRIII and love it. I reviewed it last year against a Fuji X100V and I believe it was better than the Fuji.
@MichaelGerrard2 жыл бұрын
I am sure the GR can be used for any manner of photography. Just because most buy it for Street does not limit its use to that genre. If you go for a hike and at the same time you want to take some photos, a small camera is a good idea. Perhaps the GR is ideal as it has a large sensor, is small and it is lightweight. With the 28mm equiv. lens it should be a nice option.

It’s the problem with old technology. The same issues exist with all electronic cameras of a certain age- they will break and fixing them could be impossible. This is not so bad on a cheaper XA but some photographers who have spent thousands on a Mamiya 7 must live on a £3500 knife edge wondering will this be the day it breaks.

develop and scan the film yourself; it brings the cost per frame down significantly (assuming you already have a digital camera and a macro lens) and it enhances the experience. shooting film is what brought me back to enjoying the photographic process. i still shoot digital, but i very much prefer the experience of film from start to finish. find a decent half-frame 35mm camera and you've got a small every day camera that gets you at least 72 images per roll. shoot larger formats depending on the circumstance. there are so many fantastic cameras and film emulsions to explore.
