The first Pipe tobacco I smoked was actually nightcap. It was s special experience, that brought me into diving deeper into the pipe hobby, and ultimately finding ytpc. I also found that the tin I had bought was actually 4 years old. My first memory of it was the smell of tar and kerosene, bringing me back to my childhood when my grandfather would smear tar on his wooden boat in the summer. So yes, this tobacco has a special place in my heart. I'm so happy it will still be around.

Dunhill Nightcap was actually my first English blend when I first started smoking a pipe. I was 22. Before I smoked Nightcap an older guy at a tobacconist I still frequent asked me to smoke a bowl of straight latakia before trying an English. I was only about 6 months into pipe smoking so I really didn't know any better but I did it and I actually really enjoyed it. Ever since then for the last 15 years I always keep aromatics and full bodied English blends on hand and Nightcap is one that is always in my tobacco rotation.

I’m smoking some Nightcap right now watching this. As a long time cigar smoker but newbie to pipe smoking, I’d say Nightcap is relative in strength to a medium full cigar, but nothing overpowered. I think most people that start out smoking pipes first might think this is very strong because they often start off with Aromatics then move to English blends. It’s definitely strong, but I agree nothing extreme. What I really like about pipe smoking compared to cigars is there’s much more variety in flavors between Aromatics, English, Virginias, etc. And that’s coming from the huge variety of flavors cigars already have. Kind of regret not getting into pipe smoking sooner, I would have loved to try the McClelland and Middle Earth blends.

As a cigar smoker , Nightcap was my introduction to pipe tobacco. I love it and I'm glad to know it's back. ( Nightcap is nice in the AM too ! ) Since it went away , I've been trying more aromatic blends. So my overall knowledge of pipe Tobacco has increased for the better. Latakia , BTW , is strong in flavor , but relatively low in nicotine due to the process in which it's made.

Tried Nightcap for the first time today, I’m rather new to pipe smoking, but I really enjoyed this blend. I do like English blends, and I found Nightcap to be very pleasant and smoky, not nearly as strong in flavor as I was thinking it would be. Just the right amount of flavor, and stayed lit very well. Quite similar to Kramers father Dempsey to me? Just a tad smokier, and a bit spicier. Thank you Bradley for another great review!

Just tried NC for the first time. I’m in love! As a nic lighweight, I can confirm that this is not a nic bomb. To me it’s just right. It’s strong in flavour and certainly not an all dayer. I opened the tin in the office and everyone complained about the smell of burning. They didn’t find out that it was me 😎. NC is suitable for what it says it’s for: as an experience to end the day. Like dessert. Brad, NC is exactly how you describe it: intense flavourful, smooth, but not as strong as Elizabethan. The perique is so faint it provides that exquisite harshness that lerks in the background. Packs perfectly and just right out of the tin. Brad, as usual your reviews align exactly with my flavour profile. Thank you so much for referring me to this blend! 🤝

I agree: Nightcap isn't that strong in the Lady N departement. I opened one of my two remaining original Dunhill tins a couple of days ago, hadn't had it in months and 1.) enjoy it tremendously and 2.) was kind of surprised at how unchallenging I found the nicotine level. And I'm overall smoking less, abandoned cigarettes altogether (finally!), therefore am not as used to nicotine as I was before and still it's not overpowering. Provided one smokes accordingly slow and cool, I assume. But, yeah, it's not a Latakia beginner's tobacco. I started with My Mixture 965 back in the days and that was totally fine and I'm a Lat lover ever since.

Fairly new to pipe smoking and I have only tried aromatics so far. I thought that I would give Nightcap a go as my first English blend and in the hope that I might actually taste something. Of course I could taste nothing as usual. I wasn't expecting the smell to be so different. Very strong and powerful and definitely not to my novice's nose liking. I suppose it's like someone who is used to cheddar cheese and then tries strong blue cheese for the first time and concludes it smells like smelly socks while everyone else just devours it! The tobacco was bone dry. I bought it in the summer from a Denver tobacco shop. I think the sun might have been baking the tin. So I might drop into Peterson's pipe shop here in Dublin and see what they can recommend for a milder English blend just to compare. Maybe EMP. Great videos by the way.

Bradley, just watched this for the first time. Never cared for Nightcap but it's certainly a venerable mixture. For what it's worth, most STG tobaccos are blended by Orlik, which is owned by STG. They even own Pipes & Cigars! One STG blend I'd love to get your take on is Peterson University Flake. I smoked it 20 years ago, and recently tried it again. Still like it. The latakia (which uses oriental as a base) and the orientals might be why users call it "strong." I find that orientals impart a relaxing effect perhaps because of the different proportion of chemicals that orientals impart versus other tobaccos. Tobacco in general does contain natural MAOIs.

Half way through my first tin of Nightcap. Love it. Not too strong at all for me either having returned to pipe smoking just 5 months ago. I find it to be even better than Early Morning Pipe, another blend that I also enjoy. I do admit that, for me anyway, there is a difference in depth, a layering of taste whenever I use filter as opposed to non filter smoking of not just these two blends, but St.Bruno's Ready Rubbed, Condor Long Cut or I think, correct me if I'm wrong , Gawith's Best Flake which is a Virginia. Either way still good. When I say layering, I can taste almond, chocolate, grassiness of Virgina, fruitiness, breadiness and hints of alcohol. Need more time to familiarise myself with the differences say between Perique, Latakia and Orientals. Virginia's have a slight grassiness for me. Rgds

I decanted a (Peterson) Nightcap into a couple of jars and I feed from it occasionally. Having never smoked anything else with perique in it, i wonder if i am picking it here correctly. Note that i eat VERY hot spicy food. Basically after a few puffs, there is a little bit o peppery burning sensation, but only in the mouth, not in the nose and i do retro-hale alot. However, asides the tiny spiciness, i dont know if there is a certain aroma i should be picking to define as perique.

I would recommend trying a sample before purchasing if you are not familiar with latakia blends (as I am). My first impression on opening the tin was barnyard and strong leather odours. The tobacco was very moist and required relighting every few puffs. I didn't complete a full bowl, however,. I thought the taste was awful and reminiscent of burning leather. I will cellar this tin and come back to it in a few months, but overall I wish I had spent my $40 on something else. Cheers.

Thats english. If you dont like campfire, smoke, peat, leather, and turning over logs during winter. You will not like english. Balkan's/slash oritentals combine that taste but with a more musty tangy sour flavor. Reminiscent of incense and, old books. More Virginia, forward english blends may be your thing. They balance out the leather and, smoke. With a sweet white wine/citrus hay like taste. Aging nightcap is not going to reduce the flavor you dont like in it.. It will make it stronger albeit more cohesive and, refined. English is like sitting in a old woodland by a campfire with an old book wearing a old leathery jacket. Thats why it is so loved. Its like smoking fine aged scotch.
