The reason it's so much on the used market is the hashrate of memory based cryptocurrencies, it was almost as fast as a 3090 on mining Etherium. Had one for a while, but sold it and got a 6900 XT, but if I had known about the hashrate then I'd have kept it and made some money :D Also, it looks really nice and clean!

This was nothing near being a "flop" it was a monster computecard, and it did ETH 120mhs at 96w with some tweaking, pretty sure that was 3090 performance. Not to mention this was the precursor to the MI300X chip. If you want to talk about a flop that would be the pentium 4, or FX5900U or ATi 2900XT or Bulldozer.

But was it really a flop? They all sold after all.... My Vega 64 LC died last month (probably the dead capacitor issue many of them seem to be developing as they age like corked wine). It did everything I needed it to until then, which coincided well with Phantom Liberty, BG3 and Starfield coming out - didn't need anything better till now. Replaced it with a 7900XTX which leaves the old card in the dust, five years and 3 generations on.

Radeon VII was not a failure per se, it was a workstation card that got pushed to consumers in a time when Nvidia did a huge price hike. Suddenly the card could be released somewhat competitively. It would be perfectly fine as a workstation gpu otherwise.

@raresmacovei8382
@raresmacovei8382 Жыл бұрын
Primitive Shaders ended up as part of NGGC: Next Generation Geometry Culling, that ended up in RDNA. Based on tests on Linux, there weren't enough shader stages exposed on Vega, so even if NGGC was used, performance didn't change. The option doesn't really do anything on RDNA1 either, but it's enabled by default for RDNA2 and 3. There's a reason RDNA2+ are geometry crunching monsters, tessellation included.

Nah i don't agree it was a flop let alone AMD's biggest flop. It was just the most frail card ever made (code 43 = dead card) and too good at mining and productivity instead of gaming. Also AMD didn't really make that many of these. If anything the 5700xt was a larger flop with the well documented driver issues, same goes for the 6500xt and 7600's trainwreck launches. Anybody who bought one of these at MSRP and mined crypto with it made back what they paid and probably more than enough to buy a 4090 or sold it for a nice profit during the mining craze, so if their cards didn't get the infamous code 43 the radeon VII owners were very happy with their purchase.
@AchakBrooks

Lol, I was so happy gamer reviewers hated this card, and didn’t do much in the way of “practical” production reviews. Made the demand less, and kept the price MSRP(until the crypto dorks understood this card). I was able to at least get three at launch which totaled a little more than a single 2080ti. I used mostly for programs/plugins that utilized GPU based rendering. If you were not memory restricted two VII’s where on par with a 2080ti using CUDA. When memory was an issue the VII blew by the 2080ti. Not till OPTIX’s intergration started to mature did the VII start to loose production value, kinda. I must have been lucky with the drivers, I used them as egpus with a mac and internally with a threadripper system, I never experienced issues gaming or working with programs like so many reviewers said they had. I didn’t like the noise they made so I water cooled them which allowed further tweeking and boost of the cards clocks. Also for gaming using the smart access memory allowed to stabilize frame rates much better than I would get with my 2080ti. It always seemed Nvidia cards could reach highs but the drops were always so visibly annoying, which a lot of reviewers really didn’t cover at the time.

I noticed that you kept original air cooler on it. Well, for all your high-res test it automatically means that your card hit thermal throttling limits. I spent additional 200 dollars to get AIO for this card, I played a lot with airflow and got the thermals to the level where this does not happens. This card has incredibly high FP64 performance (or double precision) and shines in productivity. Photo or video editing, compute etc. Radeon VII PRO version even has 2x that much computing performance. There isnt many products which are capable to do both gaming and productivity. 4K with FSR 2.1 on Balanced is quite good, but honestly, Radeon VII is bottlenecking even my Threadripper 1900x (Gen 1 Ryzen).

All the tests are unfortunately invalid. The Radeon VII is a DX 11 card and will experience up to 30% additional performance in DX 11 or Vulkan. Additionally, the card's performance climbs as it climbs in resolution (deltas close the closer you get to 4K due to its high bandwidth and throughput). VRAM is more beneficial, the higher the resolution climbs, obviously. And while, no not all games use 16 GB of RAM, titles like RE 4 show that games that need more than 12 GB of VRAM are really only serviceable by cards with 16 GB of VRAM. Finally, the Radeon VII is a superstar in productivity, compute and AI workloads. It's forgivable for it to be a good but not stellar gaming performer.

biggest flop? i think you mistake the "7" on the radeon VII for the HD 7990 which was a flop from the day it was announced.

I love how the 3080 12gb casually wipes the floor with the 4070 at higher resolutions. What the hell where Nvidia smoking when they fitted that POS with 192 bit memory bus?

I bought this brand new from AMD when it came out and I really wasn't disappointed in it lol. The look was very nice with my build and it played every game I played so I was very happy with it. Mining killed these things left and right so getting them used is almost guaranteed a bad deal for the buyer.

The entirety of Vega was a disappointment and it was Raja Koduri's responsibility. Intel made a mistake by hiring him, he's more of a liability than an asset. Was declared End of Life within months, what an appalling GPU. AMD without Koduri has been nothing but smooth, competitive sailing
