I did a big part of my computational physics PhD on the Radeon VII. We bought 10 of them for the price of 1 Tesla V100. Same VRAM, same performance, 1/10 the price. The only affordable card with FP64 capabilities. And it was 2-slot, from a time before Nvidia/AMD made all their decent cards oversized 3.5-slot nonsense, to make it impossible to put them in servers.

I've never forgotten the Radeon VII and I've wanted one ever since it was released, simply because I thought (and still think) that it is a really cool piece of tech. Heck, they still seem to sell regularly for >300€ on Ebay. I still keep a system with a custom watercooled Radeon VII because it's the best of GCN. Love playing with this card and when you unlock the power limits... WOW. You won't get any proper overclocking until you do so. Then it can clock above 2GHz. It's just a simple regedit change and a reboot and the power limits are removed. Be prepared, depending on the power limit tweak you use, to consume near 500W of power. Yes... it consumes that much when unlocked. You pretty much need water for that though. After unlocking it, it performs about the same as a 2080 Ti give or take. Of course it consumes far more power though.

There's really lovely color enhancement settings, and hdr on it looked much better than on any other card. The fluid motion for playing videos I'd say this card is top tier due to color & intrapolation tech, and potentially top tier for upscale, transcode using h265/264 (only cards of 3080 and better start beating it there). In certain games, you can edit files, and make the game load more assets into vram - effectively using more vram, but performance gain in those games from that is 5-25fps boost in lows in some cases (mostly open world titles on unreal engine and and redengine games - like older pre-rt version of witcher). Also overclocking is good too but hard to do; The 16GB of vram is considered an entry level into compute and AI and you wont find a better deal compared to nvidia teslas as even the kepler GPUs only get more through dual cards. one of the biggest boost to performance with this card that i remember was by undervolting the core but overclocking the vram. I could set mine up with the dual bios for stock and overclock to lend for reviews i imagine the shipping would be pricey.

Not forgotten by me. I've been wanting one for years. It's stayed expensive though due to it's HBM memory.
@MaddJakd Жыл бұрын
The HMB was the least of its "issues." The low production run was the real kicker here (read: they only rebadged so many MI50/60s, on top of capacity constraints) Plus, that was when AMD went through their major change in leadership.
@i_zoru Жыл бұрын
the main reason why it's expensive is the HBM2 Memory type, it is capable of handling large data i mean crazy large since the memory bus width are 4096 bits (the one before this card are R9 Fury x that has this size of the bus), but at a slower rate which makes this card are better for rendering somehow HBM had a massive stack of die, unlike GDDR5/6 you'll only need one, not to mention the chip would be far bigger that the GDDR5/6 chip, HBM require interposer because you can't stick this thing directly to the PCB since they didn't got enough room for PCB

I find it to be a happy coincidence, that earlier today, I found a Radeon Vega Frontier Edition for about £180 2nd hand, and this video releasing. I was wondering how it'd fare against the RX 6600XT. The Radeon Vega Frontier Edition is a generation older than the VII, but close enough for one to see how it'd handle. I already have Radeon 6650XT on my machine, but the FE is interesting (and looks great, by the by) and I considered having a 2nd build with it. Now watching this video, I can only smile at my purchase this summer for my birthday, that I am sitting on a solid good card. Many thanks for the video. :) I might still consider the Radeon Vega Frontier Edition, as a collectors piece.

I have it`s counter part, the vega frontier. Not really a gaming card but does a reasonable job. I play Elder scrolls Skyrim AE. Some what modded. Always uses over 12gigs of v ram and some times maxes out. Would like to try this card, but newer gpu`s like the radeon rx6800 with 16 gigs of v ram are better value. It was not only upcoming new tech but also these cards where way more expensive to make that sealed there early retirement.

Due to DX12_2, the minimum gpu for low spec gamers to get is probably going to be the Gtx 1660 series even though Rdna 1 is getting cheaper as well whilst some are even more powerful than 1660, but the lack of features are coming back to haunt that generation.
@FirstnameLastname-py3bc Жыл бұрын

@@FirstnameLastname-py3bc things like mesh shaders, there's probably more too. If you check the fps results of something like a rx 5700 vs rx 6600 on Alan Wake, you'll see. I'd grab a VII on looks alone, but price/preformance still looks iffy. On the other hand, I finally went for the Nimez drivers and my Gigabyte 56 OC (beautiful backplate working hard), now identifies as a Vega 64, runs 7-9'C cooler, coughs up 15-20 fps more in Superposition medium and the coil whine has taken a new tone. And Cyberpunk 2077... is still Cyberpunk 2077, but perfectly playable. With HBCC, I think I have a cut-down VII when I need it.

A great way to utilize that VRAM would just be to play VRChat in a public lobby with everyone's avatars enabled. lol But seriously though! This would be perfect amount of VRAM, especially with the HBMC function, for big parties in VRChat . Shit gets pretty wild!

I've had a Radeon VII since launch day and I am still using it right now. It's reaching the end of it's life for me however as it simply doesn't work properly with Ark Survival Ascended (any pre-RDNA AMD GPU's don't seem to be able to handle the water in the game) and it's reached the point now that new features like frame generation aren't compatible with it, and it's not getting the latest driver updates anymore. I always buy enthusiast grade cards, and as I am doing a build at the end of 2024 I will likely be forced to go Nvidia this time as AMD are supposedly not launching an 8800 or 8900, and I am not going to buy a 7900XTX just as it's due to become obsolete.

Modded texture packs is where a card like this might shine, not the in-game sliders. Skyrim modded in 4k regularly uses up almost all of my GPU's 24Gb VRAM buffer, for instance.

People asking for stupid money on eBay for these for a while now. Still a great card, but not worth £450 / $550 which they are listing for (obviously). I managed to grab one for £200 + £15 postage back in October, when my 5700XT died. I'm waiting to do a full system upgrade sometime in 2024, so there was no point in buying a new 7800XT (which normally I would have) to pay full price yet house it with the Ryzen 2700X makes no sense. Radeon VII has been doing amazingly well, and it's a cool looking card to own.

Trust me, I bought a Radeon VII after it launched and I will never buy another one. The interposer that connects the HBM2 to the GPU die frequently fails and there is nothing that can be done to fix it. I got lucky and got a Radeon VII that has Samsung made HBM and my card still works. Then again the GPU core on my card wasn't that bad and I could underclock it a little bit, knock off 120mv, and the Hot spot temps stayed below 90c. Miners snapped these things up during the last Crypto run and they rked any VII that had Hynix HBM.

I have one in my collection actually bought it new🤔 But its a unique card and I’ve always loved the look of it. Its about as fast as a 5700xt, 2080, 1080ti just depends on the game. Its one of those cards that really needs an undervolt to keep sound in check. I probably should’ve sold it when prices were @%^*+#% crazy but I like collecting gpu’s I couldn’t part with it. Im running a 4090 and 7900xtx in my 2 main rigs now and did have it with a 5950x in a build but i got a 6800xt taichi for $320 not long ago and put it with the 5950x. I think I’m gonna do i build with a spare parts and put it with a 3900xt and crosshair vii mb. I did have a 2080 but sold it in a build but i do have a 1080ti and 5700xt two cards that should be around its performance. I would like to test them in 2024 to see how it hold up.

The point of a lot of VRAM as I understand it isn’t to crank everything to Ultra on a card that can’t handle it but rather put textures on Ultra and everything else at low. It should still look a lot better than another comparable card with lower VRAM that has to play with everything on low including textures. Textures does a lot for the look and it’s basically free as long as you have the VRAM.

The Error 43 was actually a sudden death. Nothing to do with undervolting or mining, as a person that ran mining during that time period. I had one VII fail in this matter, and it was undervolted and miraculously maintained (new paste and thermal pads). The amount of VIIs exhibiting this error pointed towards a hardware design issue and premature failure via wear and tear. Part of the other issue is that the HBM memory on the core made repair literally impossible aside from swapping GPU Cores.
@m8x425 Жыл бұрын
Poor interposer.... especially if the HBM2 was made by Hynix. VII's with the HBM made by Samsung seem to have fared better.... but the Samsung HBM didn't overclock as well.
