The chain chomps… if you wait around long enough, they eventually break the chain and chase you… I mean, the developers absolutely did not have to add this in, but they did. Or the fact that there’s a “Hammer bro Mario sliding down a hill” sprite, yet to actually do this, you need to perform a certain action on a very specific and obscure point in the game. This is very unlikely, yet the developers added it. Just this alone, you can tell the devs play tested the hell out of this game and number one goal was quality.

Spike is actually my favorite Mario character (or design, mainly, but I will favor one for design alone), sharing a spot with Buster Beetle. So imagine my enthusiasm during the time of Mario Party 9, and the notable uptick of the character being featured since then.

I always felt the purpose of the warp whistles were to make up for the fact that SMB3 had no saves or even a password system. For a game with this much content if you wanted to see everything without using them would take several hours. Most of us didn't have as much screen time back then as kids today do.
@melchior2678

Aside from the fact that smart phones and tablets are now commonplace, why do kids today have more screentime than kids in the 90s?
@ststriker
@ststriker 5 ай бұрын
@@melchior2678 When I was younger kids maybe had just one console and sometimes it was in the living room. When kids got home from school after they finished their homework they were allowed to play for a little while until the parents were ready to watch tv. If they were lucky enough to have a game console in their room they weren't allowed to play all day on it, the parents would often encourage them to go outside and play. If they wanted to watch their favorite sitcom or cartoon on tv they would have to wait a week or sometimes longer for one 30 minute episode with commercial breaks and sometimes that episode would be a rerun. If you came into the show in the middle of a season you would have to just try to follow along. There was no binge watching an entire season in one sitting. If you wanted to rent out a movie you had to walk or ride your bike to the nearest blockbuster and then walk back a few days later to return. There was no renting movies through the tv. Even in school now students are issued Chromebooks to do their work instead of books paper and pencils. Technology has come a long way I will admit but I believe something has been lost along the way.
@SammEater
@SammEater 4 ай бұрын
@@melchior2678 Because the world is a darker place now than ever before, parents are not allowing kids to play as much outside as they did when we were kids. Therefore, they have more screentime with videogames than we did.

The castle one we indeed discovered trying to go above the top like you could in SMB 1-2! The white block one some friend told me in school, and I only learned about the third one reading the complete/official Mario Guide later on (which would cover all three games). I also loved SMB3 for the variety. It's still the same gameplay, but they somehow managed to cram in so much variety. I remember first being bamboozled by SMB's maps suddenly being in the dark or snowy, then SMB2 having whales (Yeah! Whales! Not just blocks! Woah!), and SMB3 finally having all those thematic worlds and the first time finding the hammer suite, which wasn't mentioned in the manual at all… Super Mario World felt huge, too, but to me it never brought back that magic of SMB3. Only recently Mario Wonder kind of put a bit back with the Wonder Seed variety, but still not 100% the same.

I'm so glad that when I was born my parents already owned a NES with Legend of Zelda, Mike Tyson's Punch Out, SMB/Duck Hunt, Super Mario Bros 2 and Super Mario Bros 3. Even when I was too young (I guess I mostly messed around in Duck Hunt or SMB2) I would ask my mom to play Super Mario Bros 3. In fact whenever she comes over I load up SMB3 in an emulator for her. She still loves playing the game too. Trying to get her to play Super Mario World though even though I still think 3 is superior to World. I'm still upset my stepdad threw away my copy of SMB3 which still had the original case and manual.

The first time I saw this game I was 6 years old in 1990 and my older brothers brought me with them to their friend that lived in our same neighborhood who had just bought the game to show it to us. I kept dying and falling into pits but I was so blown away by the game that when it was time to leave and go home they had to pull me away kicking and crying having a fit. Even though I owned a Master System I bugged the crap out of my parents for the rest of the year until they bought me an NES Christmas of that same year. There's dozens of Super Mario sequels and some that came super close like Super Mario World and recently Mario Wonder, but hands down this is still the perfect Mario game and a certified masterpiece. 😇

I still remember the first time I played this. I'd had an NES for a while, but we weren't exactly flush with cash, so I didn't have a ton of exposure. I think the SNES may have even been out by then, but my parents just made sure I didn't know about it. Anyway, mom was hanging out with two adult friends and they had an NES they gave to myself and one of their daughter's to play. I was blown away by how different and fun, and yet familiar, SMB3 was compared to my pack in SMB cart. That was also the first day I ever saw Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

You've put that cartridge that I've mistaken with the 52-games one that I had in my childhood just for me to watch it rollin'... CONFESS!!! 😂😂😂 Great episode, by the way. Every time I see SMB 3 topping anybody's list of best NES games I keep myself wondering why and trying to escape. Of course, I've played it in the past...! But, either my brother or his friends were better than me... Or I always tended to be the Luigi in the gang! 😅 So, not much tender memories, I got impatient with the fact that anybody could be better than me in this game. But, yeah, I've always acknowledged how GREAT this game is as an accomplishment. A high-level achievement of imagination and creative game design. One of Shigeru Miyamoto's demonstrations of genius. And the innovative soundtrack by Koji Kondo made a true statement of inventiveness. Not my big favorite, though. The one that always brings me great memories is Mega Man 2, specially due to its fabulous soundtrack... I'm a composer, and, so... The gameplay only isn't enough to bring me smiles.

It's my favorite NES Mario, but it's only game weaknesses are the undeveloped W8 and it's easiness due to being able to collect 28 items! With INCREDIBLE SUITS! If you beat the game, you'll get 28 P-Wings...Each Mario up to SMW got better and SMW got the difficulty right(IF YOU FINISH EVERYTHING WITHIN IT)...
@BigOleWords

I don’t think I ever realized there was. P-Wing prize for beating the game!
@pattrell5257
@pattrell5257 5 ай бұрын
@@BigOleWords Try it and start playing again. You don't have to actually play it over again. Just beat it and begin again. Then, notice your item "safe". It'll be automatically full of P-wings; plus, when you begin to deplete those P-wings you'll add the normal items as if in a normal game, as well; that's a lot of special items that you have access to...So, SMB3 is super fun, but also easy or very, very easy depending on which of the 2 versions you play. BUT, ONE OTHER THING, YOU CAN REMEMBER WHERE ALL OF THE SPECIAL ITEMS ARE(like Tanooki and Hammer suit) AND PICK THEM. SO, WHERE THE ITEMS EXACTLY ARE ISN'T RANDOM...

Fantastic video! I love seeing nostalgic takes on even super common games- we all had 'em growing up, and the stories you tell around them are just as important as the games themselves! Also: the locks on the maps are meant to be shortcuts! if you have to continue from running out of lives, they don't come back, even if the rest of the levels do! So you can skip some levels if you've opened the locks!

@Big Ole Words When you talked about the items, you forgot one to talk about, the anchor. I had that game in the past as a Child and the anchor was mentioned in the manual but no where found in the during my play through as a child. But one day I stumbled about it, it's only available in a blue toad's hut. I found 2 stages where you can summon it. - World one Level four, the auto scroller level. Here you have to collect all coins, and it will appear but i really men all, also in the few coin blogs, you need them all. - World two Level Two, that one where you ride at the end with that hovering platform above that little pond. Also collect here all coins including the coin boxes and you get the anchor. The tricky part here is not to destroy the blogs that can get coins. Hope I could give you some new secret to find. The usage of the Anchor is pretty limited, I think it's the most useless Item in the game.

I did totally leave out the coin ship and the white toad houses as I was too lazy to try and make them manifest. But you’re right that the anchor is super weird (and useless) and as such definitely worth discussing.

I remember when this just came out. Very few games had me wishing for a copy as much as this one did! It was so frustrating seeing all those copies at the rental store and none were available to rent. Eventually I managed to find one and it was probably my favourite game to rent … until my Aunt gifted me my very first copy for Christmas! Suddenly I had all the time in the world to discover secrets and get through to the end! I thought I was so clever when I learned of the whistles and planned out how to make it to the last level with a hand full of P-wings. This let me by-pass some of the hardest parts and make it to Bowser’s Castle. Eventually I actually got really good and didn’t need them. In fact it wasn’t until later I actually went through every level just to see how good I was! Probably one of the few games from that time I make look easy. Hey, it may seem easy if you’re a long time player but let someone who hasn’t try it. I have had both kids and adults tell me I make it look easy! I’ve even managed to find all the secret white mushroom house in each map. I do still find turning the hammer bros on the map into coin ships a bit tricky 😅 Anyways, like any super fan I could rant about this game forever 🍄 so I’ll leave it there with a thank you! From one super fan to another

Some games such as Tiny Toon 1, MC Kids or Armadillo were copied from Mario 3, probably because pirates hacked them as sequels for Famiclones. I have a game called Super Mario World 9. For many years I thought it was Mario, but it was actually Adventure Island 2 .

I honestly think SMB3 is better than Super Mario World, but that might be my age. My family didn't have the money to get me an SNES as a kid, so I played my NES Super Mario games until they wore out; deeply loved all three but the original and 3 were my favorites. SMW, as good as it is, just never scratched the same itch.

So glad you made this video, even though its not about a hidden gem or whatever. Everything you said is spot on. But gotta say, and I don't mean this as a humble brag, just stating a fact, I figured out 2nd and 3rd warp whistle pretty easily on my own when I first got the game as a kid, and that was before I subcribed to Nintendo Power (and WAAAAY before the internet, of course,) and I honestly dont think I was that good at that game back then compared to some of my peers. I had to ask one of my friends on the playground about the other warp whistle, which actually is the very first one you can get. I hadn't figured out that you could fall behind the white rectangles until he told me about it. So that was the one I couldn't figure out on my own, but the other two werent hard. Anyway thanks for making this video, I love all things SM3!

have you heard of this one NES/Famicom game where you're in a mall that's flooded by rising lava, and you have to climb escalators to get to higher floors? i think i've asked this on a different video but this specific game keeps budging into my mind yet i never remembered its name. it's one of those games I've played on those hundred-in-1 GBA cartridges edit: you dont have to know this, but man i finally found it! The KZbin video with the URL JH1DNAjOSjw was showcasing 100 Famicom exclusives, and it showed at 17:50 pretty much what I was trying to describe and was what I remembered from memory. I don't remember if the game itself is great though. Urusei Yatsura: Lum no Wedding Bell

It's a great game, if you're playing 1 player. Every time my brother and I played he would die immediately leaving me to clear the map, then when it'd come time for a bonus like a toad house or memory he'd steal the play because it was now accessible and "it was his turn." He'd also burn through his lives and continues really quick, and because "he wasn't getting turns anymore" we'd have to reset or stop playing before I could get halfway through world 2.

@@AyumuNarumi75 you probably didn't know that because you didn't have a little brother who died at the first obstacle of every level, lol. Probably my fav NES game! I prefer it to the all-stars version. I did like on GBA, with the E-Reader cards (which I sadly no longer have), you can get extra levels and can pack your options list with pwings, frogs, hammer bros, and tanuki suits and try all the levels with them! Its funny how after mario 1, mario 2 is a dream, and mario 3 is a play. Also, did you know the whistle is straight from Zelda? I'm glad they used the special mapper to give us dancing scenery, a lot of games dropped that on their way out of japan (like contra and zelda, but no way mario 3 was after spicing up mario 2).😊
