Looking at these lists is such a good reality check for fans of rebuilding teams

Yup it doesn't always work out!

@@MikeBartner I think this also explains why some teams would rather rely on veteran stars (even if they are aged 35+, if still playable) than tear it down and rebuild before they retire, because God knows who is available for them to draft, or what existing players are out there (which may involve giving away high draft picks in exchange)

Fun stuff, would definitely endorse the idea of making this a series, and also re-ranking the prospect pools as you go.

13:42 "They had to blow it up because basically none of these guys panned out outside of Mario Ferraro." I'd argue it's less that none of the guys panned out and more that they were consistently trading away picks and prospects and when they did pick in the first round it was consistently late. Merkley was the biggest name that didn't pan out, but he was always expected to be a boom or bust guy. In 2014 they picked 27th and Goldobin didn't pan out (doing well in the KHL last I checked), 2015 they had a big hit in Timo Meier with one of their rare early picks, though they've since traded him away when they opted for the full rebuild, 2016 they traded their first (30th overall) to get Martin Jones, 2017 they took Josh Norris but they traded him for Karlsson, 2018 they opted for Merkley who was known to be boom-or-bust, 2019 they traded their first for Evander Kane (29th overall), 2020 they traded the first for Karlsson (3rd overall, Tim Stutzle), though I know that obviously wouldn't be included in this 2019 ranking. Essentially they were trying to go all in and extend their window. They missed the playoffs twice between 1998 and 2019, 2002-03 and 2014-15.

That 2019 draft is looking preeeeeety good for the Capitals right now. McMichael late in the first and Protas down in the third round.

Arseni Gritsyuk actually is looking great for the Devils. He has 25 points in 33 KHL games this season (and he was on a tear earlier on) and his contract is up at the end of the year

hes also the best stick handler in the league. I could see him getting a ppg in his nhl career

Prospects and collective pools get wrong all the time. PIT back in 2014 had a bottom 10 ranked pool. But it ended up being great with Murray, Guentzel, Rust, Dumoulin, Depres, Sheary, ect. Their prospects were a big reason for the back to back SC wins.

It's funny how many highly touted guys go bust. Also surprised at the high hit rate with these goalies

Alexeyev at number 1 for the caps just makes me sad. I had really high hopes for him, but it seems all he’s ever gonna be here is just a 7th defender who occasionally gets some playing time. McMichael is still a huge surprise to me, I had almost given up on him after last year then suddenly he moves to wing and turns into a stud
@stephenball21082 күн бұрын
I think Alexeyev just missed a lot of important development time with injuries unfortunately. I think he can have a career as a bottom pair defenseman, he’d be seeing more play time if he was on a different team, but the Caps starting 6 blue line is very solid, one of the better in the league.
@devilsarebeastly4 күн бұрын
So these lists also just show who they thought would be the best prospects, it doesn't show how many prospects actuality made it. For example the Devils list could have included Fabian Zetterlund 3rd round pick in 17', Yegor Sharangovich 5th round pick in 18', also McLeod did make it as an NHLer but is caught up in the hockey canada scandal and has become a bit of a Voldemort he who shall not be named to the fan base..

while that CBJ prospect pool didn’t bring a lot of elite talent, it seems like it had the best hit rate of any team in this video, with 6/10 becoming NHLers

Dont forget Fox was drafted by Calgary. Then traded to Carolina before sent NY for a 2nd rnd pick and a conditional pick in 2020. NJ had their best draft in 2017 with Nico Hischier and Bratt who went ROUND SIX!!!

Ever since the offseason untill now Chris druy has failed this team. On top of that Peter can't get the best out of his players or create better defensive and forechiceking schemes.very hard for me to blame the core when it's pretty much been rolling back for 4 years.
Like your takes & and knowledge, but why so many GDs? 😮
