I think people lose sight of what a huge effort soft body damage modeling is against all the other features demanded of both casual and simulation racing nowadays. When damage/destruction is a core mechanic, the time and effort spent on visible damage makes sense because it factors heavily into what players are expected to do: look at beamng, Wreckfest, arguably Grand Theft Auto V, and you can see how those games are practically built around damage modeling, to a point that it's almost the top selling point of each. Think about how Forza Motorsport had to juggle increasingly sophisticated graphics against consistently large numbers of cars game over game, all while acclimating to greater demands for the overall physics and multiplayer experience. I know car makes hold influence over visible damage modeling, but I think people overlook how far it falls down the list of things developers strive to get right.

The funniest thing about Dustin’s rant, is there IS a Pokémon fan game with the option he described. It’s called Pokémon Unbound, and it’s really bloody good too. You can turn that feature on or off, but if you over level your Pokémon before you beat the Gym, the game becomes more difficult.

Everything else asside, the actual driving us a horrible experience imo. They slowed the steering speed waaaaay down so you have to start turning seconds before normal and makes chicanes heavy and sluggish. If you open telemetry and flick the joystick left to right, compare the time the wheel takes to follow and then do the same in motorsport 4, the difference is very significant.

I'm talking about moving the stick to full lock and the game taking its sweet time to actually turn the wheel all the way around. Its intention is to prevent players from spinning out every time they steer slightly too hard for a split second, but different people have better thumb control than others so when it's taken to an extreme it can get very annoying. Sim steerings description claims to turn off effects like these, but it only does it when countersteering

I think the main complain to this games' handling was that the cars would have an unrealistic amount of oversteer when steering was set to simulation, si It was terrible on a wheel. Afaic, regular steering with a controller was fine.

Tbh I will always defend the class restriction system in this game. Yes, i know that its confusing to people at First, but this mode made for some of the closest and most competitve online races i ever had in any online game. Those restrictions allowed for certains cars to have their specific strenghts and weaknesses to shine a lot more in a competitive spectrum. Also, the class restrictions dont block the player from building their cars to the classes they like as both in the campaign and on online lobbies there are options for "Open Class" races where you can race in any class you built your car to.

Agreed the whole point is cause it’s similar to real life. If you’re trying to be in a certain “class” of cars, I.e Miata spec or street class, there are max restrictions, not necessarily restrictions of choice. @@wyattmunger5529 I agree that restrictions usually make things worse off for players, especially since it’s a game and it’s a more casual audience versus iracing or assetto corsa, but to have some grounding in “sim style racing”, to make it simulation means to mimic real life. There are restrictions in real life in order to fill certain race criteria. You don’t take a 1000 hp drag spec muscle car with drag slicks to a time attack race that’s muscle car inspired simply because they’re muscle cars. They’re built to certain specs, so races are balanced and give all racers a fighting chance. Again, this is quite boring for casual players and I don’t think this is the best way to go about it but it’s just reflecting how it is in real life

In regards to the rant you had about customization and the PI system: dont be surprised, but pokemon actually works very close to how you said, and was expanded upon in scarlet and violet. In the games before scarlet and violet, traded pokemon would not obey ur commands if they reached higher than a certain level until you acquired more gym badges. This was expanded to be any pokemon, not just traded ones, in scarlet and violet. It was slightly more harsh in scarlet and violet as well, as it seemed to work in 10-20 level increments, rather than the standard lv30, lv50, lv70 and lv100 in the previous generations.

I absolutely hated having a big inclusion of purpose-built Off-roaders and stuff like 4x4's/SUVs and then even having some as paid DLC. I have absolutely no issue with games that cater towards an off-road experience and it's one of my favourite parts of Horizon but I have never seen anyone who enjoyed driving Buggies and Baja Trucks around normal race tracks in this game. Especially since some of these are forced as part of the Campaign if you want all the Cup Completion Rewards so you can't even skip them. If there were atleast Rallycross Tracks that had some Off-road parts then I wouldn't mind as much but driving a Penhall Cholla around Brand's Hatch and the like is just a frustratingly bad experience. Even for stuff like Trophy Trucks they could've put some ramps and the like on the track to atleast be close to something like the Super Trucks that race at Long Beach irl but nope. In general the game is Quality

I have no idea, but the rant at around 17:32 feels so asinine, ridiculous, and "missing the point" that I actually do need to make this comment. I kinda feel that maybe you missed the point on the upgrade things. There is a reason why it's said "homologation" and not "limitation". I think FM7 tries to lean into actual racing where each division have its own restriction on power, weight, and even type of setups that you can do. I feel the game also leans quite heavily on you learning how to tune, which is something I get even in Horizon sometime. You can't just slap upgrades randomly and expect it to work. You see this in real life racings where each class have its own restriction and set ups (i.e Super GT GT500 and GT300). And, Eden, I think your analogy falls apart because... most RPG and FPS games do actually restrict you with some guns/weapons/skill until a certain level. CoD has been doing this for a long time where you will unlock new weapons (and skills, in the older CoD) as you level up and restrict you to a limited set of guns, attachment, and skills to use. RPGs do this a lot where you are given limited slot of upgrades on your equipment (and character skills) until you hit a certain level. Like... this kind of feature existed for a LONG long time in gaming sphere. The analogy feels asinine and breaks apart *unless* you never play games, ever. Maybe it's just me reading between the line but that rant felt so out of place and feel like it isn't from someone who actually plays game. I understand that maybe you only play racing games but that whole damn rant, outside the Pokemon one, just didn't hit right. I do agree tho. Maybe if you can turn it off the "homologation" thing and have players choose between "Play as casual", where you can upgrade the car whichever way you want as long as it hits the maximum level, and "Play like a pro", where you do need to also follow the rules of the homologation classes and actually think about tuning and upgrades. Making it like CRPG games where you can play "Hardcore" or "Just for the story". As someone who actually started playing Forza from FM7, I feel if it has you (the player) choose between "Hardcore" and "Casual", your rant here won't exist.

I only played this game way after the controversies about it blew over, and found it to be a decent time. Not amazing, but the on-track experience for the single player career was good. Not a fan of how it forces such limitations on car upgrades though. But the actual driving feel is easily the best of the XB1 entries. I did mess around with the race length thing, and I think it's a potentially good feature that they didn't do a good job with. The standard race length is pretty short, it would be nice to have something a bit longer. But the next level up basically triples race length, it's way too much. Somewhere around the range of 150-200% the length would have been good, leave the triple for a higher setting. I actually don't mind the garage soundtrack for this game. Don't care for the race stuff, but the menu music feels like it's calling back to FM1 a bit. The career menu music in that game was great, genuinely really underrated.

I think the main improvement for fm7 vs fm6 is for casual racers. Specifically, “Friction Assist”. Basically, if you like corner cutting in career races, then it on. Also, it’s an absolute must if you wanna win the Endurance races.

Yeah I'm actually glad I didn't buy FM8 and instead bought FM7 on ebay just over a week ago, FM8 career and upgrade system looks horrid and that's all I play on these games.

I actually really enjoyed this game for a time. Of course you rate it based on the singleplayer aspect which i get. But just hopping into like an online track day event with a normal, slightly tuned car or an old f1 car trying to set good laps and avoiding slower/faster cars was truly something fun and chill every now and then. But even those sessions were kinda ruined by kids driving the modern f1 car into everyone. In terms of the suits, i would say those were pretty useless but once you have like 90% of the cars in the game, those things became at least for me a thing to collect even tho no one ever saw them aside from me. But hey everyone has their own opinion on games like the forza franchise and that i respect.

The simulation steering was touchy in an odd way. The loot boxes were annoying. The booming sounds in the menus got fatiguing after a while. I wasn't able to race multiple laps on nurburgring against A.I. in a private lobby anymore. I recall having to level up to unlock cars for purchase as well. That made it tediously unrewarding. That's a shame, because the weather characteristics were GREAT!

I hated what they did to car tuning in fm7.. I know that some people like it for the "added realism" but I don't give a rats ass about realism when all it does is make the game worse for the 99% who play it for FUN. If there was an option to turn it all off and on (off by default 100%) then I wouldn't have had any issues with it. But as it stands, there's no point in upgrading cars for your "career" as you can't use tuned cars for anything but single races in free play. Hope the new game does better in this regard

I remember buying the ultimate edition of this when it was on sale. Claimed all the stuff that came with it and after 25 minutes I got around a million credits from various rewards the game gave you. Shortly after a message pops up saying I was banned for credit hacking, and there was nothing they can do. They refused to work with me further and I haven’t played the game since (Was an xbox user at the time, so hacking isn’t possible)

Hey Dustin, is the realism of engine sounds something you care about? Forza always sounded *fine* to me, until I played GT7 and was blown away by how believable each car sounded compared to their real-life counterpart. Now all I can hear are lawnmowers with Forza, and the new Forza Motorsport doesn't appear much better. Curious what your opinions are on the matter. Thank you! edit: also fire spitting tailpipes should not be a thing in racing sims, fight me.

it's actually used to be the opposite in old days. Gran Turismo sounded like Lawnmowers and now it's Forza. There's a reason for this. Some people from the Old Sound team for Forza either quit or were fired, and a good number of them now work for Gran Turismo instead, and this reflects somewhat in later patches of Gran Turismo Sport, and especially now in GT7.

@@OfficialMidnightRuby I've been playing sims since GT3 and Sega GT were new games and I wouldn't go so far as to say it used to be the opposite. Though Forza may have had the best car sounds, it was only the best sounding lawnmower. But to be fair, imo, until GT7, they've all sounded unrealistic. GT7 is the first sim I've played where it seems they crafted the sound for each individual engine. I was curious so I looked it up. In 2014, Turn 10's lead audio designer left to start his own company and then shortly after was hired on at Polyphony. So it wasn't the entire team, but still, it's possible his leaving is why the car sounds have barely been improved at Turn 10.

I had a pretty mid time with this game back when it came out. It was and still is the only Motorsport game i've ever played, and the impression i got wasn't great. Driving is very different from Horizon, but i tried not comparing it to it. Too heavy and unresponsive were my main thoughts about it. The homologation system sucked all the fun out of tuning cars for me. So i just bought cars, applied the homologated parts on them (and was absolutely appalled when a few cars i wanted to use got downgraded to fit restrictions, mainly in the form of power restrictors) and did the races. Progression was nice, i liked it. The AI however, i didn't. Much like i still hate it in Horizon titles. Drivatar needs to go in favour of actual AIs that actually are racing rather than trying to pit maneuver you every corner because the supposed player they're modeled after does it to other AIs. That was a very rage inducing part of my experience. Online mode at the time was awful, not a lot of racing types, an awfully small set of races that would repeat over and over... so once i completed the career 100%, i just never played the game again. It got better with updates, but by the time things changed, i'd moved on. Think it took me about a month to fully complete it and then that was it.

What did you expect, Turn 10 is littered with career women now. Forza MS 2005 the OG is the best If Forza MS 4 had the OST of the first game, harder grind and endurance races then that would be the best Forza.

Dating is fine don't worry, I just don't like it when they go mess up games I like. If you want a good example of career women? 343, you know the people who destroyed one of the biggest franchises ever Halo and completely alienated the old fan base. These women only got into gamedev AFTER it stopped being a cringy thing for nerds only and now everyone is pissed they are messing up the games. They have game setting for blind people IN A RACING SIMCADE just to be nice and iclusive forgetting that it can be exploited bruh What? Do you like like career women making games? You know, like Dustborn? Or maybe you enjoy watching Acolyte too?

I’m so good with this game that I play in the hardest difficulty “unbeatable” and with the all driver aids off except “abs” and I play with the transmission in “manual with clutch” yet I still beat the cpu all the time! But it still fun as hell for me…

Pokemon Black and White actually did restrict how much exp you received to prevent over leveling. That feature wasn't seen after those games.

It's not an official game and instead a mod made by fans, but it's extremely challenging due to that, since it makes sure that you don't have a higher level than the next gym leader. It's called PokeMMO. Oh, yeah, there's also a shooter which restricts which parts you use through a level: Battlefield 2042. Basically, your weapon has a level and through leveling it up you unlock the attachments. At the beginning you have none, you unlock the first one half way through level 0.

I played the hell out of this game and its the only motorsport game i ever played, only played GT before. Always loved the freedom to build your own cars for online races which this game is the best at but it i agree it was unfinished. Got tired of a lot of the crappy tracks and no new ones being added plus the voting system was broken. slipstreaming was also non existent like why??
