Love this video... I've been working for an Australian Architect for the last 12 years and been trying to have this conversation with them all of that time, and it is hard to get engagement but it is so critical to getting the building in the right location. The shift between GDA94 to GDA2020 has also made this mode complex as Australia has actually shifted by 1.5m on the east coast and 1.8m on the west coast with the shifting of the tectonic plates, and the MGA grid is basically projected using satellite technology for GPS etc... Also MGA 56 only applies to the East Coast so Sydney and Brisbane, but other major cities are in other zones... Fantastic series of videos... really iseful and also hadn't thought of using Blender to validate/verify IFC outputs... Thanks

Have to agree with Dion, at the core of managing multiple projects model from multiple consultants with multiple software applications, defining the survey setout , Grids, Project North, True North, Magnetic North etc is critical. The Survey management is only going to become even more critical when IF4x3 and IFC5 when linear infrastructure projects begin to include this information.

I agree, and I am really looking forward to IFC5 as well!

Thanks for this great explanation of geolocation in IFC. In the US I often get a third north from surveyors: magnetic north. Which is the direction that your compass needle points to. This is common on old surveys and can be very confusing and difficult to reconcile because this is an angle that changes from your to year and place to place.

Interesting! Thank you very much for sharing this, and I'm happy you found the video helpful!

Indeed! For anybody reading along, always remember: never use magnetic north!

Great video! What is the correct way to represent the height above sea level in revit and ifc? Sometimes there are building-parts with different Revit project base points because of height differences of the terrain. I had problems representing that situation in previous projects.

Petru, Dion, can you help me to find moment in your conversations when Dion said that there is not very big difference between using Blender or Revit UI to run IfcOpenShell. Thanks in advance. You're doing a great job! Thank you!

Thank you! I’m not sure Dion said that, I think I asked him about this but he said that this is not what he said. I’ll try to find that reply from him.
