In this first part I try to get a Korg DW-6000 to power up. It's not cooperating!

Love this, it's so satisfying to see an old synth being brought back to life :)

Lots of keyboards from this era have unpopulated slots, components, even connector pins. Minor improvements were often made to circuit designs during the production run of an instrument - The JX-8P is a good example of this. That resistor under the CPU board of the broken unit looks factory. Also, even though you cleaned the surface of the board underneath the EPROM and SRAM chips (IC2 and 3), the traces are still quite corroded. Have you checked continuity on all of them? Regardless, that corrosion will progress and is likely to cause future problems, even IF the traces are still providing continuity today. I would remove those sockets again (sorry!) and use a scalpel to scrape back ALL the dark corroded areas under IC2 and 3 and around C35, etc. until you see only clean bare copper (a fiber glass brush is also helpful). Any broken traces should be repaired with bare wire + solder and then all of the scraped traces should be rechecked then resealed with conformal coating. Other questions: Do the PSU rails test as they should under load? Is IC1 getting power, clock and reset as it should? Are IC 2 and 3 getting power? Use an oscilloscope to probe the critical pins on IC1, 2, and 3 on your working unit and then check the bad unit. That spill could have caused a short and damaged an IC or 2 as well. Good luck!!!

Buy a hakko desoldering gun. You will love it

I did and I do. Have no idea how in the world I was able to function before!

Regarding the unpopulated seats of the board, maybe the keyboard shares the board with the DW-8000 and the parts are only present in that model.

Have the same synth with similar issues although it does show display and responds to data changes. The only sound is that drop sound you had. I have also changed the same chip with new one but drop sound still persists. Thanks for showing your DIY skills. Great you got it working again

Anche il mio dw ha quel suono orrendo ma i led sono accesi, attendo con ansia la seconda parte! Voi avete risolto?

I've got a similar situation except I have one good DW8000 and one that lights up but just does nothing more. Will probably be going down the same route.
