Drop and live-fire tests of a Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile-Extended Range (JASSM-ER) long-range cruise missile done in U.S. Air Force Rapid Dragon Experimentation Program.
Rapid Dragon is a palletized weapons module which is airdropped from cargo planes and deploys flying munitions, typically cruise missiles.

This is exactly the kind of thing that the US military needs more of -- ways to extract big bangs out of pre-existing bucks. So often it seems that the US military's first instinct is to think that we need an incredibly expensive new platform. Whoever came up with Rapid Dragon deserves to be richly rewarded.

It's like China and Russia come up with e new surface to air missile, they fit it to land platforms then make a naval version to keep cost down. In the US different companies make separate missiles for each, like the Standard family for naval use and Patriot and Thaad for land use, keeping cost, and I suppose, profits up.

@@briananthony4044 The Russians are famous for making many different types of missiles in the hope that something gets through. Some work better than others. The USA is famous for making only a few types and spending a fortune perfecting all of them.

@@josephastier7421 Actually it is the other way around. The USSR often made a missile type then used it across all services, while the US services each went their own way. A good example in the US is the armies Thaad and the navies SM-6 and SM-3. They could have used the SM family from ground launchers and saved billions in development costs of the Thaad. Likewise RAM and ESSM from ground launchers could have been used instead of developing Patriot for short to medium range engagements and now we have NSSM using ground launched AMRAAMs which have the advantage of having their own terminal homing which also competes with Patriot. When the Tomahawk was developed, the USAF went their own way and developed the similar Boeing ALCM. Lightweight fighters, AF F-16 Navy F-18. Heavy fighter, AF F-15 Navy F-14. The USSR, by comparison, often used a system developed for one service, in another. Examples are the S-300 system, a land based surface to air missile system. It was also deployed on soviet cruisers and battlecruisers and carriers. The Mochka had such a system. TOR is another Soviet system used on land and at sea in ships from corvettes to aircraft carriers for short range air defence. The Pantsir system is used on land and sea. It is a combined gun missile system. Kashtan, navy and Tungusta, army also. Another is the armies Iskander, a hypersonic missile launched from mobile tracked launchers, modify the missile, and you have the air launched Kinzhal hypersonic missile. No need to design a new missile. The Russian Kalibre cruise missile can be launched from ground launchers, from submarines, surface ships and the air. Both the Mig-29 and the Sukhoi come in land and naval variants.

@@briananthony4044 I mean the number of different missiles. The doctrine I have seen (I am not Russian) for a Russian fighter jet to defeat a more-capable US aircraft would be to send perhaps a half dozen missiles against it from standoff range, all of different types, in three waves of two missiles each, chosen by the flight computer to be different. Diversity is strength, and the American plane will have to defeat many adversaries with varying strengths and weaknesses. Only one of them has to work. From the American side, if they were to attack a Russian plane, they might send two or three AIM-260. The Russian plane would have to fight the same thing three times, and if it could do it once, it will probably be OK with the rest.

Yeah, main advantage is that you don't need a bomber to deploy it, just a cargo ramp, and that it significantly outranges long-range anti air defence systems with 900+ km range (one version has 1800 km range). If it gets mass produced enough it could allow the US to just decommission more B-52s since this lets plain cargo aircraft do everything you would usually use a B-52 for and are actually useful for logistics as well instead of being a burden. Also, they are cheap enough that you can literally buy a thousand of them for the cost of one S-400 anti air missile system (1.2M vs 1.2B) and they can be made radar seeking, so you can have a fleet of cargo planes just permanently suprressing enemy air defences by firing every two hours for a hundred days so that you permanently have a radar seeking cruise missile loitering over an area which you suspect has an anti air battery.

Or maybe Myria, the second An-225 if it ever gets completed after the war. >:D Just imagine if that Antanov airlift suddenly deployed Rapid Dragon over vital Russian strategic targets.

This must be the mist significant advance in aviation warfare ever since the 1st bomb was dropped from a WW1 biplane.

I wouldn't go that far. They just pushing a bomb with wings out a plane. I didn't see what this couldn't have been used 50 years ago

I think it's a very big deal. And armed with anti-ship missiles, would allow nations to defend their territory from naval threats as well. Another game changer would be to equip 50,000 JDAMs with a wing kit and seeker head to attack moving targets. And these could be launched from Rapid Dragon, as well.

@@warrenpeas because the technology to make cruise missiles small enough to work in anything but the largest cargo planes wasn't there?

Those cargo planes are going to be super vulnerable to a2a attacks, I assume these are long range missiles.
